E. Context
II. BODY
A. Spiritual Gift of Tongues
a. The Spiritual gift of tongues is an angelic language
1. Tongues is an angelic language
1 Corinthians 13:1 ESV
1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
1. Paul is encouraging his readers that the gifts, w/out the underpinning of love is useless
2. My point though, is that Paul is getting ready to discuss the difference between prophecy & tongues
i. So Paul is suggesting that tongues is a spiritual…angelic language
b. Tongues is a spiritual language directed to God as prayer or worship
1 Corinthians 14:2 ESV
2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.
1 Cor 14:2
1. Since tongues is directed to God, it is often prayer or worship
1 Corinthians 14:14–15 ESV
14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. 15 What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also.
1 Corinthians 14:14 ESV
14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful.
B. The spiritual gift of tongues manifests in different ways
a. tongues as prayer language (ref vs 14-15)
1. Praying in tongues builds up one’s self
1 Corinthians 14:4 ESV
4 The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.
2. Praying in tongues helps us in our weaknesses
Romans 8:26 ESV
26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
Ro 8:
3. Praying in tongues is unintelligible groanings by the spirit to the father
i. Where prophecy is a word given through 1 person 2 another person by God...
-Tongues is a prayer/praise to God by the spirit to help the person communicate
b. Tongues as a supernatural language understood by another in their own language
(describe acts 2)
Acts 2:5
Acts 2:5 ESV
5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven.
1. Illust. P. Richard shares a story...
c. Tongues in the corporate setting
1. the one who gives prayer/praise in tongues should allow for decency & in order
i. There shouldn’t be a bunch o tongues & interpretation, but only a few…1 @a time
1 Cor 14:27
1 Corinthians 14:27 ESV
27 If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret.
ii. Should make sure there is an interpreter
iii. ...or should have an interpretation
i. Should have an interpretation or make sure there is an interpreter
1 Cor 14:
1 Corinthians 14:13 ESV
13 Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret.
C. Spiritual gift of interpretation of tongues
1 Cor 14:
1 Corinthians 14:27 ESV
27 If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret.
a. the interpretation gives value to the tongue for the whole congregation
1 Corinthians 14:28 ESV
28 But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God.
1. why?
b. the interpretation brings the congregation into unity as we worship together in agreement
with the interpretation
1 Corinthians 14:9–11 ESV
9 So with yourselves, if with your tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible, how will anyone know what is said? For you will be speaking into the air. 10 There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning, 11 but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me.
c. with interpretation the congregation is built up
1 Corinthians 14:5 ESV
5 Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.
D. Final analysis
a. It may seem that Paul is beating up on the gift of tongues
1. That’s not it at all!
b. Paul spoke in tongues more than any1 in the Corinthian Church
1 Corinthians 14:18 ESV
18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.
c. Paul encouraged the Corinthian Church to speak in tongues
1 Corinthians 14:5 ESV
5 Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.
1 Cor 14:
1. Paul desired maturity which comes w/understanding
2. tongues & interpretation is equal to prophecy because of the understanding
d. Tongues & interpretation are good, but tongues is better in 1’s prayer language &
1. prophecy is better in the gathered people
