Destiny: You Are Anointed.

When I preach a message I have in my mind that I desperately want to see people permanently changed for the better, that when they leave they are not the same as when they came in.

Here is the issue with that. Now I’m not saying that it’s wrong. In fact it’s very right. However in order to become better at a thing you have to take a look at what you aren’t doing that you should be or that you are doing that you shouldn’t be and change it.

If you are a Christian here today and you want to to be a better Christian you have to find those areas that don’t line up… and make them line up. You must repent.

Now does anyone in here remember what I found in the thesaurus what the opposite of repentance was..... That’s right… Happiness. So today I want to try something a little different. Not that it’s bad to find those areas that we need to repent and pray like crazy that God helps us, but I simply want to look at what Christ did. Why He came and What He wants to do.

You Have a Destiny

In we see what I would call the Lord’s Mission Statement. Every great organization has a great mission statement and this is what our king and savior said his was.

Luke 4:18–19 ESV

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Now this statement is so packed with stuff, that even though there are only 53 words in our language here, we are going to spend 6 weeks talking about it.

Why? Well, if we signed up to be part of His Kingdom, we signed up to join His mission. If we can’t go where He is going, well then obviously we are not following Him we are following us.

Today we are going to take a look at the power of His Mission, because if we are following Him, we are on the same mission.

If the Holy Spirit is on Him, The Holy Spirit is on Us

Grammar. When you add because to a statement you can no longer separate them.

I am hungry, because I didn’t eat.

I bumped into that tree, because I wasn’t watching where I was going.

Bobby’s stomach is upset because he ate 7 bean burritos

Bobby’s kids can’t use the restroom, because Bobby just came out.

Bobby’s daughter is blind, because she went in anyway.

When I was first looking at this portion, I wanted to simply do a message about the Spirit of the Lord being on us.... However it is tied to because He has anointed me.

When you are struck with the thought that the Spirit is on me, you can’t get very far without asking the question “Why?”

I wanted to talk about the cool things that happen when the Spirit is on us:

Peace that passes understanding.

Joy unspeakable.

It can be so overwhelming we might be slain in the Spirit

Goosebumps

Sometimes we get to speak in a language we don’t know.

We are actually born of the Sprit.

There is a confidence that we have knowing the the Spirit of God resides in our soul.

All that stuff and alot more.... still lead me to one question.... Why?

THERE HAS TO BE SOMETHING MORE.

The Spirit of God looks over the entire world and says, “That Rich needs to feel good and empowered. I better rest on him.” No, it doesn’t make sense. THERE HAS TO BE SOMETHING MORE. And the next line tells us the more… Because He has anointed me.

Throughout the OT the Holy Spirit came on people

The 70 Elders in - to help Moses prophesy to the whining Israelites. (WHEN I SAY PROPHESY, I WANT YOU TO HEAR.... PROCLAIM GOD’S TRUTH)

Balaam he was a sorcerer and when He saw that God wanted to bless His people he turned his Heart and God filled Him with the Spirit so he could proclaim the goodness of God.

Othniel was empowered to Judge and war with the enemy

Gideon was empowered to gather God’s people to fight the enemy

Samson had super strength to fight the enemy. in this particular verse, It say’s Samson tore apart a lion like you would a young goat. --- I’ve never even tore apart a young goat.

On and on - prophesying (Proclaiming the truths of God and fighting the enemy.

The disciples prophesying, gifts of healing, tongues, words of knowledge… other gifts.

1 John 2:20 ESV

But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge.

But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.

1 jn 2:

Anointing = chrisma = gift… or gifted.

God has gifted you the anointing you need to be all He created you to be.

That which empowered Him, empowers us.

There is this promise that if you follow Him… now i don’t mean a weak sure yeah of… I me an FOLLOW. It requires a passion to be where He is. And how do you know where He is .... ask, seek, knock.

Luke 11:13 ESV

If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

The Holy Spirit is on Me

One of the things I hate is one someone tells me how special they are. Here’s some truth, 98% of us in this room know more than everyone else in this room about a some topic. But 100% of are lacking greatly in almost every topic. But you know what.... God loves us so much that He wants you anyway. You are a beautiful human being no matter how horrible you are. He loves you and has a purpose for your life. You probably aren’t worth it but His grace and His mercy lifts you up to a place you probably can’t conceive. And he has gifted you with God on you, God in you, and God through you.... The Holy Spirit.

In closing, I want you to repeat the first 11 words of this passage.

The Holy Spirit is on me
