The Reason For Our Response
The Reason For Our Response
Colossians 3:1
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Colossians 3:17
Christ has united us with the Spirit and has made us into a new creation, driven by His love, peace and grace. Our hearts and lives have been transformed in such a way that our lives find their fullness and everything that they need in Him and in Him alone.
As new creations, we can only find our fullness in the One who has created us and redeemed our hearts for His glory. Our lives only find meaning in the Lord.
With this understanding in mind, Christ points us toward the truth that then in everything our pursuit and aim should be for the Lord for it is in Him alone that we find our fullness.
Is He our aim and our pursuit or are we missing what God is desiring to do because our aim and pursuit is ourselves? When our aim is ourselves, we will always find the need for something more or something different. We will never find the satisfaction of our heart.
When Christ is our aim and we seek to bring Him glory in every word and deed, we see that every situation takes on a greater significance and that God is continually transforming us to glorify Him in every situation.
Our Marriages
Our Marriages
Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.
In our marriages, this response takes the form of surrender to one another because of who God is forming you to be. Wives submit to your husbands. The Lord begins with the woman each time that He talks about marriage because a woman who does not want to follow will not follow. This command by the Lord is void of some basic provisors that we often go to. It does not say submit to your husband when he has proven himself to make good decisions or whne you agree with the way that he is going about things. It says submit to the husband as is fitting to the Lord. We submit in the same manner that we submit to God.
Husbands are called to love their wives. In , this love is defined as loving our wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. This kind of love does not focus on whether they are deserving or not of the love, it is not focused on what has been done lately or even what has not been done lately.
This kind of love is centered on our relationship with God. Wives sumbit out of their relationship with God and husbands love out of their relationship with God.
Our Homes
Our Homes
Colossians
Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.
Children are called to obey their parents, not in recognition of their authority, proivision or deeds. Their obedience is directly correlated to their relationship with God. Obey for it pleases the Lord. This speaks to how we are to direct our children as parents. As they grow in their understanding of God, so will their obedience.
Parents do not embitter your children. Specifically Fathers for men tend to be the disciplinarians and they tend to be the ones who swoop in and try to fix the dynamics of the household. Often this is done through fear and assertion of authority. If God is ruling and reigning, should he not be the one that we point our children toward?
The World
The World
Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for their wrongs, and there is no favoritism.
Masters, provide your slaves with what is right and fair, because you know that you also have a Master in heaven.
In our interactions with the world, we are to be people who recognize that what we do is not for the approval of man but for our Heavenly Father. Our best should always be what we strive for, but our best is defined for us.
