Psalm 27

Afraid of What?

Afraid of What? v1-3 - August 21
Seek Who?. v4-5 - August 28
Hold On to What? v13-14 - Sept. 4

What are you afraid of?

The dark? The monster in the closet? A spider? A snake? A big bad breathed wolf?
The Three little pigs. (Video)
The doctor? The dentist? One of your classmates? The neighborhood bully? A sibling? A relative - cousin, aunt, uncle, grandparent?

Afraid of What? v2

Evildoers who assail (attack) me?
My adversaries and foes?
An army encamped against me?
War that arises against me?

Four Reasons to not be afraid. v1

1. Because the LORD is his name. v1

The LORD - Yahweh - “I Am”
In Exodus 3:14 God introduces his name to Moses at the burning bush.
Exodus 3:14 ESV
14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ”
God’s people have an adversary or foe. It is pharoah, King of Egypt, the most powerful man in the world.
God sends Moses to rescue his people from Pharoah.
The LORD is all powerful, all knowing, is present everywhere, never gets tired, depends on no one. He has no beginning and no ending. He simply IS!
No enemy can match him.
Psalm 20:7 ESV
7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.

You do not need to be afraid because the LORD is his name.

2. Because the LORD is light. v1

Now, darkness can be a scary because....
things are hidden to our sight.
someone or thing could be hiding or lurking.
The Bible talks about outer-darkness - The closest I have come to outer darkness is in a very remote place where I could not even see my hand in front of my face.
Our greatest enemy is Satan and he loves darkness and he prowls around like a lion.
1 Peter 5:8 ESV
8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
But the LORD is characterized by light. Jesus even says that I am the Light of the world in John 8:12.
Light provides guidance, protection, confidence.
Light always defeats the darkness.
Light travels at 670 million mph. That means if we could put you in a special created vehicle you could circumnavigates the globe 7.5 times in 1 second.
Magellan circumnavigated the globe from 1519-1522. Almost 3 years.
John 1:5 ESV
5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

You do not need to fear because the LORD is light.

3. Because the LORD is salvation. v1

A major theme throughout scripture is the LORD saves, delivers, or rescues his people.
We may face trials and test, (James 1:17) but those who put their trust in the LORD always win, because God always wins.
The biggest rescue is from sin and the consequences of our sin.
Psalm 98:1–3 ESV
1 Oh sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. 2 The Lord has made known his salvation; he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations. 3 He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

You do not need to fear because the LORD is salvation.

4. Because the LORD is a stronghold. v1

A stronghold is a place of security, strength, and stability.
Even if there is an army or war (v3) itself those who put their trust in the LORD can be confident (v3) and will be victorious.
Psalm 9:9–10 ESV
9 The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. 10 And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.

You do not need to fear because the LORD is a stronghold.
