Corinthians

1 Corinthians 12:1 NKJV
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:
The church at Corinth was awash in Spiritual gifts and had become prideful and in some ways carnal in their approach to the Spiritual life
Paul the founder of the church there between 49 & 50 AD; It is where he met Aquila & Percila and resider there for more than 18 months (Acts 18). The city was destroyed by the Romans in 146 and leveled it to the ground. In 44 AD Julius Caesar decided to rebuild it and named it “Colony of Corinth in honor of Julius”. After his assassination, Claudius began a persecution against the Jews and life for the church became difficult.
Acts 18:1–9 NKJV
After these things Paul departed from Athens and went to Corinth. And he found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla (because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to depart from Rome); and he came to them. So, because he was of the same trade, he stayed with them and worked; for by occupation they were tentmakers. And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and persuaded both Jews and Greeks. When Silas and Timothy had come from Macedonia, Paul was compelled by the Spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus is the Christ. But when they opposed him and blasphemed, he shook his garments and said to them, “Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean. From now on I will go to the Gentiles.” And he departed from there and entered the house of a certain man named Justus, one who worshiped God, whose house was next door to the synagogue. Then Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his household. And many of the Corinthians, hearing, believed and were baptized. Now the Lord spoke to Paul in the night by a vision, “Do not be afraid, but speak, and do not keep silent;
Paul reminds them of their former way and how that they in ignorance worshiped idols and had no Spiritual enlightenment. They were walking in Spiritual ignorance and being led astray
He clearly lays the foundation for his teaching with verse 3
1 Corinthians 12:3 NKJV
Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.
There were those who were implying that speaking in tongues and prophesying were doing it under the influence of evil spirits.
A simple test… if it doesn’t glorify Christ and exalt Him … it’s not of God!
In the past they were led astray by idols and false priests and were of benefit spiritually
Psalm 115:5–6 NKJV
They have mouths, but they do not speak; Eyes they have, but they do not see; They have ears, but they do not hear; Noses they have, but they do not smell;
He shows them how to discern those gifts that were from the Spirit, true Spiritual gifts!
There were no shortage of false teachers and prophets claiming inspiration
The other was that no man could live Spiritual life without the presence of the Holy Spirit!
“To own this truth and maintain it to death, and live under the influence of it, could not be done without the sanctification and perseverance as on the mediation of Christ for our reconciliation and acceptance with God; and no man can confess this truth in the day of trial but by the Holy Spirit animating and encouraging him.”
We talked last week about the fervency that a believer should experience in their relationship with God.
Paul points them to the source of these manifestations
1 Corinthians 12:4–6 NKJV
There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.
In Romans Paul wrote from Corinth:
Romans 12:3 NKJV
For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.
He went on tho say:
Romans 12:4–7 NKJV
For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching;
Paul now lays out the categories of “Gifts” given to the church
1 Corinthians 12:4 NKJV
There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
Diversities - root word choice - of gifts - this would include Tongues, Prophecy, Interpretation of Tongues
1 Corinthians 12:5 NKJV
There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.
Ministries - services or servant roles - Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors, Teachers
1 Corinthians 12:6 NKJV
And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.
Activities - energema - Activity - to be at work - to effect - Hellenism the word was used to denote cosmic forces at work in man or in the world - In the NT is is almost exclusively for the work of the divine or demonic powers
In Eph 6 we are told that there are principalities and powers - energema at work in the world.
1 Corinthians 12:7 NKJV
But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:
The word manifestation entails an act in which the Spirit manifests Himself not simply a theoretical precept - to demonstrate or set-forth
This was Paul’s defense against the craftiness of his adversaries who falsifying the truth!
But it was to be for the profit if all!
How has the Spirit profited you today?
Have you taken advantage of the Spiritual gifts that are made available through the Karis - grace of God
These gifts are only available to the believer who through confession have received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior
Have you confessed Christ as Lord of your life?
Have you tasted of the living water and feed your should with the bread of life?
Today can be your day
