1 Corinthians 11:1-16

July 7, 2002

Intro: Next Question.

1 Corinthians 7:1, Now concerning the things of which you wrote to me: …

A-  The question seems to be:  “What is the roll of men and  women in the church?”

1 Corinthians 11:1, Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.

A-  Closed with this verse last week and starts this weeks teaching.

1-   Fits all the issues that Paul has been addressing.

a-   Concerning liberties (1 Cor 11:1)

b-   Concerning church edict  (1 Cor 11:1)

B-  For instruction in godliness we look to the bible as our guide.

1-   What we look to is:

a-   God’s instruction in the O.T.

b-   Jesus’ example in the N.T. Gospels

c-   And man following Jesus’ example in Acts and the epistles.

Paul: “In matters of Christian living I have taken biblical principles, considered WWJD, and lived my life accordingly for the benefit of the church of Christ.

2-   Paul was not perfect because apparently there were ways in which he didn’t imitate Christ.

a-   But God’s desire is that we would imitate the godly as they imitate our Lord.

Hebrews 10:24,  And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works,

John 13:15,  “For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.

Read Romans 15:1-7

1 Corinthians 11:2,  Now I praise you, brethren, that you remember me in all things and keep the traditions just as I delivered them to you.

A-  Paul is saying  “(V:1 being the case) I praise (approve) that you (constantly) remember me and keep the traditions.

1-   Now traditions are usually a bad word.

a-   Usually something that causes a church to remain in a spiritual rut and hinders any new thing the Lord wants to do.

-         (why do you do that like that?) We just always have.

b-   It can be a tool of destruction to God’s work when man places tradition of par with God’s word.

B-  Tradition here = That which is passed along by teaching.

2 Thessalonians 2:15,  Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle.

1-   The reason for the letter to Paul is not doctrinal or theological.

a-   But the application of the teachings of Paul.

-         It’s what make things so rich for us or any church.

b-   Society may change is many different ways but God never does.

1 Corinthians 11:3,  But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.

A-  But I want you to know = This is important (something not previously addressed in detail).

1-   Concerning the biblical roll for men and women in the church.

a-   The biblical order (organization) in which God intends society to be structured is:

-         The Father – Jesus – man – women

-         If you have no order, in any organization, you have a mess.

1Corinthians 14:40,  Let all things be done decently and in order. (Concerning spiritual gifts and their application)

Ø It’s important to understand what the bible is NOT saying here or anywhere else.

A-  We are not being told that Men are superior to women in God’s sight.

1-   In an unsaved state they are both seen as Spiritually dead.

2-   In as saved state God sees both as equals.

Galatians 3:28, There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

3-   There is no distinction between man and women in:

a-   Personal worth, abilities, intellect, or in spirituality.

B-  With the structure that we have in this church:

1-   If I have a problem with a ministry

a-   I’ll talk to the leader

2-   If God needs to call someone of the carpet.

a-   In the household

b-   In the church.

-         The designated spiritual leaders

·        The male.

Read Ephesians 5:22-33

c-   Terry and I and our finances.

-         With Jesus, w/man,  w/woman,  It’s a matter of task and responsibility.

·        God’s blessed organization.

-         So the issue is not who can do better, what works best, or who is best suited, it’s what is God’s will.

Ephesians 1:22,  And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, (Christ’s authority)

Colossians 3:18, Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.  (man’s authority)

John 5:30,  “I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.  (The Father’s authority)

Read verses 4

A-  We see right off that Paul is speaking in the confines of ministry.

1-   Praying: talking to God about people.

2-   Prophesying: Talking to people about God.

Ø In society at this time it was customary for women to where Vail.

A-  Head covered = having down from the head.

1-   A man dressed as a women, while doing the work of ministry, dishonors the position God has given him.

a-   My close selection for tonight.

-         If I attempted to assume the role of a woman it just wouldn’t work.

Read verses 5-6

A-  1st notice it is ok for women to do spiritual things within the church.

Acts 21:9,  Now this man (Phillip)  had four virgin daughters who prophesied.

1-   Paul’s point again is someone doing spiritual matters masquerading as the opposite sex.

a-   Men assume your proper rolls and not that of the women.

b-   Women assume your proper rolls and not that of the men.

Read verses 7-10

A-  Paul shows the responsibility of the rolls,  men, this ought to strike the fear of God in you.

1-   At night we know that the sun still is on, still exists and shines it’s light.

a-   We can’t directly see it

b-   BUT I can indirectly see in that the moon reflects it.

-         the glory of the moon is the sun as man is the glory of God.

c-   Now at night the moon reflecting the suns light illuminates the earth.

-         The amount of light the earth receives is in direct proportion to what the moon reflects.

·        The night time earth is the glory of the moon.

·        Woman is the glory of man.

d-  Men, how glorious you are is in direct proportion to how shinny your wife is.

Read verses 8-10 God set the example and angles witnessed it.

A-  The veil should be a reminder.

1-   Jews believed that angles are the guardians of the created order.

Read Verses 11-12

A-  Male chauvinism is just as big a perversion as feminism to God’s order.

Read verses 13-15

A-  Doesn’t common since tell us that we should assume our God ordained rolls?

1 Corinthians 11:16,  But if anyone seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God.

A-  If anyone wants to argue the point examine what is the norm in the church general.

1-   Jesus is the glory of the Father,  Man is the glory of Christ, Woman is the glory of man.
