October 27, 2002
Intro: We’ve seen in Verses 1-3 how the gifts of the Holy Spirit can
be made as a
- Irritating noise
- To be of no Spiritual use to God
- And of no profit to the gifted.
A- Now, starting in verse 4, Paul is giving us a lesson in the proper application of the gifts God has given us.
1- All to be used under the banner of love.
John 15:12-13, “This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.13 “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.
a- This is Agape love (sacrificial) that I am required to lay down my desires, pride, feelings (LIFE) for others
- As Jesus did and does for me.
· Love is shown here an not an emotion but an action.
1 John 3:18, My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.
Ø Last week in Verse 4 we saw 5 aspects of Christian love.
#1- Love is longsuffering (patient)
A- This is to give mercy to someone when you have it with-in your power to retaliate.
#2- Love is kind
A- If patience is how we are to receive one another then kindness is how we are to give back.
1- Kindness is to be your weapon of destruction.
#3- Envy
A- The 1st two are what we are to do this is the 1st of what love does not do.
1- To be envious is to express jealousies.
a- Jesus describes envy, in Matthew 20:15, as having an “evil eye”.
#4- Love does not parade itself.
A- To parade one’s self means to brag of your accomplishments.
1- This is the attempt to cause others to become envious
#5- Love is not arrogant
A- To realize that I am no more than a conduit for the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 4:7, For who makes you differ from another? And what do you have that you did not receive? Now if you did indeed receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it
Ø Now we come to Verse 5
1 Corinthians 13:5, does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil;
#6- Love does not behave rudely
A- This is the caring for the feelings and sensitivities of others.
1- Well I’m just the type of person who says what’s on my mind.
a- As most of our minds are cesspools we would really appreciate if it was kept stopped up.
2- Christian love is to love those we do not like.
a- Like = external attributes.
- Are you able to love the: dirty, the unattractive, the poor, those who really have nothing to offer you.
Turn to 2 Thessalonians 3:6-15
b- Love is not self righteous
Ecclesiastes 7:16, Do not be overly righteous, Nor be overly wise:
Why should you destroy yourself?
#7- Love does not seek it’s own
A- This is the “what’s in it for me attitude”.
1- This is the type of person who:
a- Why don’t you have more people in Children’s Ministry.
b- Complain about the food in hospitality.
c- The building, worship, The Pastor
- Very willing to say what needs to be done
· But not willing to do it their selves.
1 Corinthians 14:12, Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel.
Matthew 20:28, “just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
2 Corinthians 4:7, But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.
#8- Love is not provoked
A- Love is not easily aroused to anger.
Read Isaiah 53:4-7
1- This is the revelation of the heart when tested.
a- The barometer of the love with-in us.
- If I have the love of Christ then when struck love will come out.
- If of the world then anger
1 Peter 2:23, who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously;
Ephesians 4:26, “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath,
#9- Love thinks no evil
A- Does not dwell on the evil done to him
1- Does not keep a ledger.
a- Is able to forgive and let go with the idea of full restoration.
2- This is the person who remembers the wrong done.
a- BUT still chooses to forgive.
Ephesians 4:30-32, And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you.
1 Corinthians 13:6, does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;
A- This aspect of love is double faceted.
1- It involves not doing the negative and DOING the positive.
#10 – Love does not rejoice in iniquity
A- For a Christian to rejoice in iniquity is to:
1- Derive joy from unrighteousness of sin.
a- My own or the sin of others.
Matthew 18:6, “But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea.
2- The most unloving thing we can do as Christians is to indulge in sin and cause a less mature believer to fall into it as well.
a- People look to you as an example of how a Christian should act.
- If you use maturity or liberty to indulge in sin you are loving self and not others.
Isaiah 5:20, Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
Read Galatians 5:13-15
B- Rejoicing in sin can also take an envious form.
1- Seeing someone else fall and rejoicing in their sin
a- The biggest expression of this is gossip.
- REMEMBER: gossip is still gossip even if the thing gossiped about is true.
· The worse form of gossip is gossip disguised as prayer, concern, or sympathy.
b- Be careful whom and what you share.
#11- Love, also, rejoices in the truth.
Matthew 12:30, “He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.
A- It is not enough to keep from sin you must pursue truth
1- TRUTH: God’s revealed Word of righteousness.
2 Timothy 2:22, Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
2- #1 on the list that there can be no compromise.
a- We’ve compromised on Pornography
- Kidnaps, rapes, & molestation’s.
b- We’ve compromised on abortion.
- Murder
c- We’ve compromised on creation and the creation
- The value of a person VS the value of an animal.
3- Doctrine in not important it is essential.
Psalm 138:1-2, I will praise You with my whole heart; Before the gods I will sing praises to You. I will worship toward Your holy temple,
And praise Your name For Your lovingkindness and Your truth; For You have magnified Your word above all Your name.
4- To display anything else than the truth as truth is to deny other of the power of God’s word.
a- Paul practiced what he preached.
Philippians 4:8-9, Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.9 The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.
