Review
-Paul is sure based on who taught the believers at Ephesus that they have been taught better than some of them have been behaving. So we know at least a portion of this letter is corrective.
-Paul tells them that their Old man has been crucified or done away with. He tells them to pull off the former man or the Old Nature.
I. Take your clothes off(con’t)
I. Take your clothes off(con’t)
22 that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit,
(v.22) that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, like old clothes or a piece of wood the “old self” is wasting away or being corrupted.
a. being corrupter—present passive participle---Meaning that this is a present continual/daily action. The Old Self is dying a slow death.
b. corrupt— putrefy; it is what happens to fruit, or meat at room temperature. If you leave meat it does not actively putrefy it passively does. The minute you butcher meat the cells in the meat began to break down and they don’t replace. So in a sense the smell comes from the dead cells that dont’ get replaced. When warm air hits it the process is sped up.
(v.22) that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, The NASB and the NKJV of the bible have a poor translation of this phrase. The NIV does a better job.

22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;
(v.22) You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; When there is a murder the first thing the detective is looking to establish is the cause of death. Is this a burning, stabbing, blunt force, or gunshot. Paul has given us the cause of death in this final phrase. The “old self” is being corrupted by “it’s deceitful desires”
Why does the scripture called them deceitful desires?
-These desires are deceitful because they make you think you are alive, free, and in love while you are destroying yourself at the same time.
a. desires—Epithmia---which means desire which can be good or bad
-In this case the desire are bad, and they lead to destruction. You will not know it, your descent downward will be imperceptible.
-For the believer the “old self” is being corrupted but it has also been defeated it has not power over the saint.
Mouse in the deep freezer coil. Analogy about how even though we found the root cause of the sin, and threw him away the smell still linger on some time after.
-For the believer the root cause of the stench which is the “Old Self” has been defeated the smell of sin still follows us. So that is why we need to deep clean our lives and after you deeped cleaned you have to clean daily, and after that you need to carry frebreeze and anti bacterial with you cause even after a year or so I stop smelling the dead mouse, but occasionally when I went into the garage I caught a wiff of his smell.
(v.22) because of this verse the prescription that follows in the (v.23) is critical.
23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind,
(v.23) “and that you be renewed”
1. Renew—to make new---to be renovated by inward reformation----Your mind needs an Extreme Home Makeover.
2. Renew---Was in the passive mood meaning it is not something you do. It is something done to you.
(v.23) Your mind has been occupied by a foreign invaders; Satan, the world and the flesh. They were in your mind like squatters in an abandon house. They came because you gave them permission, and then they took over because you did not stop them.
-The first thing you need to do if you become the owner of a house that has squatters is to get rid of the squatters(this is when you get saved) you must evict the Devil from your house. Then you got to start cleaning up the rooms of your mind.
-The mind needs to be gutted, nothing is salvageable. Because our thoughts has been saturated in sin.
-(v.23) It is a constant removal of Old stuff and replacement of New stuff. The Spirit of God is the one who renews the mind BUT HOW?? In order for your mind to be renewed there must be an influx of new information, as you read the scriptures and submit to them the mind starts to go through the car wash. It is real simple everyone in this room that is saved came to Christ through a verbal gospel. Meaning someone put new information, or they confirmed old information that you had learned a time before. Now the reason no changed happen when you heard the gospel the first time is because renewal requires two things:
a. hearing
b. Submission
-Saving Faith comes by hearing

17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
(v.17) This tells us that one must hear gospel or read the gospel before renewal can happen. Meaning either we are taught it, or we read it(which is teaching in words).

9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;
(v.17) Faith then causes you “to confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord” and “believe” in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Hearing happens first then submission happens next this is when you let what you are reading or listening to impact your life and be willing to Obey it before you understand it.
23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind,
(v.23) Just ask “Job” what it means to Obey God without understanding For 38 Chapters Job cried out to God for understanding about his situation and God did not give for 38 chapters and yet Job had to remain steadfast and obey. Guess what God said when he finally answered Job. Job this my universe everything was made by me and everything is sustain by me, so it is none of your business Why I do what I do!! Then Guess what Job said. I heard about you but now my eyes have seen you and I repent in dust and ashes. Although God didn’t give him the answer he wanted his mind was still renewed he now has a greater understanding than he did before his situation happened.
II. Put on your New Clothes
II. Put on your New Clothes
24 and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.
(v.24) “and” this tells us that this step is connected wit the two previous steps.
What does Paul tell us to do??
-Put on some New Clothes, not the Old ones that have been cleaned, but new clothes with the tags on. These new clothes are made of two different materials.
a. The have been made in the likeness of God(Like bamboo sheets and 1000 Count Egyptians Cotton) the likeness of God makes up the base of your new garments. These garments are meant to make you look just like Jesus.
When the text says we are made in the likeness of God it means that we are able to be like God in the area of his communicable attributes—love, joy, faith, peace, gentleness.
b. created in:
Righteousness
holiness
-This new garment is made in the likeness of God with righteousness and holiness blended through the garment.
-These new garments are meant to be spotless and white, so that folks are attracted to its brilliance.
-Paul then gives us practical examples of what it means to take off and put on
Eph 4:
25 Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth each one of you with his neighbor, for we are members of one another.
Take Off- “laying aside falsehood” Stop lying
Put on- “Speak truth each one of you with his neighbor”
Why? For we are members of one another
26 Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger,
Eph 4:26
Take Off- “Long Term Anger(Bitterness)” Be angry, And yet do not sin
Put On- Restraint(Do not let the sun go down on your anger)
Why? “and do not give the devil opportunity” Long-Term Anger will allow the Devil to have a foothold in your life.
28 He who steals must steal no longer; but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have something to share with one who has need.
Take Off- “He who steals must steal no longer” Stealing/Refusal to work for your sustenance
Put On- “But Rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good” Work Ethic
Why? So that you will have something to share with one who has need
29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.
Take Off “Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth” This is interesting the word says “let no unwholesome word” that word is the same word from (v.22) “being corrupted” So let’s replace the word for its definition: Let no rotten(putrefying) stanky, funky, smelly words come from your mouth.
Put On “But only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment” That word “edify” means build up. Even in our rebuke of people it should done in way that builds them up
Why? “So that it will give grace to those who hear”
