(ESV) — 37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ ”
Context of passage: In Jerusalem amongst Judaism’s stronghold of priests and scribes. This was the the last day of Feast of Tabernacles where annually every Jew that could went up to the temple according to the law. It is likely that Christ read their hearts that were going away unsatisfied with nothing more than checking a box.
All other prophets or apostles invited others to come somewhere or to something but Christ said ME.
I. Case Supposed “If any man thirst”
thirst is painful physically, but more severe is a thirsty soul. One who has the burden of unforgiven sin, doesn’t know the remedy, unprepared to meet God but a realization of guilt.
Pentecost...
(ESV) — 37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
(ESV) — 37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
Philippian jailor...
(ESV) — 30 Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
The natural man is called “dead” or “sleeping”, needing a second birth/new creation
II. Remedy Proposed “Let him come to Me and drink”
A simple, yet spiritually rich comment.
6 golden sayings: , , , ,
I am the Bread of life, he that comes to Me shall never hunger; and he that believes on Me shall never thirst.
I am the Light of the world: he that follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
I am the Door: by Me if any man enter in, he shall be saved.
I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life: no man comes to the Father but by Me.
Come to Me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Him that comes to Me I will in no way cast out.
If any man thirst, let him come to Me and drink.
a) We must come to Christ directly and only, nothing short will suffice
b) We must actually come to Him
c)Simple faith is the one thing required. A broken and contrite heart is required but faith is what brings the living water to our lips.
III. Promise Held Out “He that believes in me, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water”
(ESV) — 4 by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.
Figurative language defined:
For the relief of his own soul’s wants
A source of blessing to the souls of others
