Introduction (Read 9:24-27)

Paul reminds his audience of the race that they we are all in! (Believers)
We run the race with a focus and a determination
HOw determined are you to finish the race strong? How do you finish the race strong?
Fulfill the mission of God!
Verse 27: Disqualified from the race??
Great transition into chapter 10 this evening
Paul doesn’t mean the goal of the race is salvation and he is CERTAINLY not saying that the one can lose their salvation
Paul is talking about how He doesn’t want to endure the disciplining hand of God
We will see today how God disciplined his FREE people in the past which means He does today as well!
Paul was concerned that He wouldn’t be able to finish his life in a way that he could claim what he did in the final book he wrote during his life ()
2 Timothy 4:7 ESV
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
We must realize that our freedom in Christ must still be balanced with caution
We must learn from those who went before us!
The greatest thing about being the younger sibling!
You learn! Or you should’ve!
Paul uses chapter 10 to finally answer the question raised about the Temple meat, but first he uses the privileges and failures of the Israelites to teach us a lesson...

1. Five Privileges of the Israelites (v.1-4)

Super Natural Guidance
The pillar of the cloud (; )
Exodus 14:19–20 ESV
Then the angel of God who was going before the host of Israel moved and went behind them, and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them, coming between the host of Egypt and the host of Israel. And there was the cloud and the darkness. And it lit up the night without one coming near the other all night.
Exodus 13:21 ESV
And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night.
Exodus 13:21 ESV
And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night.
Well the Corinthians did too! ()()
1 Peter 1:5 ESV
who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
Luke 1:79 ESV
to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
Passing Through the DRY Sea ()
The Corinthians/Our Deliverance (SALVATION!) ()
Hebrews 2:14–15 ESV
Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.
United with a Spiritual Head ()
Exodus 14:31 ESV
Israel saw the great power that the Lord used against the Egyptians, so the people feared the Lord, and they believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses.
Christ is the head of the church!
;
1 Corinthians 11:3 ESV
But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.
Ephesians 4:12 ESV
to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
Enjoyed Spiritual Food (;)
Exodus 16:4 ESV
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not.
Exodus 16:15 ESV
When the people of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, “It is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat.
Exodus 16:15 ESV
When the people of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, “It is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat.
Exodus 16:4 ESV
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not.
Bread from Heaven ()
John 6:31–34 ESV
Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ” Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”
Enjoyed Spiritual Drink ()
Exodus 17:6 ESV
Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel.
Christ is the Water of Life! (Woman at the Well)()
John 4:10 ESV
Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”

2. The “UH-OH” Transition

Just because they had spiritual and physical privileges doesn’t mean it brought AUTOMATIC success to them!
Paul is about to transition into a series of 5 FAILURES of the Israelites that WE must learn from!
I have heard the question asked before: “How can a homosexual claim to be a believer?”
The assumption is that if someone is truly saved under the blood of Jesus Christ then how could to live such a life of sin?
I think the logic and reason is GREAT
HOWEVER! I turn the question around and ask, “How can a believer not forgive someone?” Yet there are many who are living their lives in a way as is that person doesn’t DESERVE to be forgiven
How can a believer be so critic all the time? Yet we have many
We need to listen and heed the warning that Paul gives us here and the warning is....
“Just because you have spiritual blessings, doesn’t automatically guarantee you spiritual success”
Jesus to the Pharisees: “Depart from me for I never knew you”
Paul now gives us 5 failures of the Israelites in hopes of giving us 5 warnings for our own life

3. Five Failures of the Israelites (v.6-10)

Lusted after evil things
BE AWARE if evilness lingers in your heart. Don’t let it take root! (Not just running over bikers…)
Do not Serve Idols
Do not take the term idol lightly!
- The Golden Calf
Do not commit sexual immorality
RUN from it!
Do not tempt God
“Come on now God, do what I ask!”
Pressing God to do something that is NOT His will!
Do not complain!
- He was ANGRY!!
We must realize that within these five failures, there was five PUNISHMENTS as well!
Either death or some kind of afflictions against their people
Moses was disqualified from entering the Promise Land

4. The Conclusion! (v.12-33)

Paul finally draws a conclusion to the question that arose back in chapter 8
Remember? Should we eat of the temple meat?
Verse 19: PAUL’s ANSWER!
DO NOT EAT THE MEAT!
WHY?
Verse 31-33: Do all to the Glory of God !
How do we do that? How do we finish the race strong?
Do the will of God!
What’s the will of God?
That man shall be saved!
1 Timothy 2:4 ESV
who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

Application

Do you have the same passion that man shall be saved?
Is there a burden in your heart to see people saved and baptized?
Prayer is part of Evangelism but it’s not Evangelism!
If you do NOT have a burden for the lost, there is something seriously wrong
If you DO, let’s see it!
James 2:26 ESV
For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.
What is your fruit?
