Tonight’s passage of Scripture is I believe the most weighty passage in the Bible. Before we dive into it together, let’s pray.
PRAY
As we start tonight, I want to tell you a story.
Q - Have you ever had the revelation that something was better than you thought?
Have you ever had the revelation that something was better than you thought?

ME

For almost my entire life I refused to try guacamole. Hard “no” for one reason and one reason only - It’s GREEN! There was no way.
That all changed when I married an Oklahoma girl, who new what good Mexican food was and made homemade guacamole from avocado and spices. One day I got passed the color green and did something I’ve never done before - tried it. My eyes lit up and I was hooked. You will hardly ever see me eat Mexican cuisine without a side of guacamole. It was like a revelation occured in my life and awoke to the wonder of guacamole.

YOU

The truth is you have a story just like that. There was something you did not know was as awesome as it was. Until you had a revelation. Maybe for you it was:
A show that you just would not watch
A place you would not go
A person would you did not want to be friends with
A artist or band you did said no to for years (we all know how a song grows on us)
A class or subject you said you would never take

WE

In one way or another, this is all of our stories. This has happened, is happening, or will happen in one way or another. What’s fascinating about this little detail in our lives is that until the revelation of how awesome that one thing or place or person happened, we treated that one thing or place or person a certain way. To be honest, we really didn’t give it the worth it deserved.

Am I right? I mean guacamole had been there the WHOLE time & I had no idea!
The reality of the fact is that it’s the same with Jesus. There comes a time when you see Jesus for who He really, truly is instead of who you have made Him out to be.
Q - To you, who is Jesus?
To many of us, Jesus look like the following:
Handyman - Jesus is the source of quick fixes.
Emergency Medical Technician - Jesus is ready to be brought in quickly when believers exhaust their own resources
Life Coach - Jesus provides practical pointers to play the game of life better
Pharmacist - Jesus puts heal ing balm on hurting hearts or prescribes pills for the suffering life throws at believers.
All of these things are true. The mistake is believing that this is who Jesus truly is.
Jesus is available in emergencies. Jesus does train, cure, and inspire. Yet each of these, when taken alone, reveals too little hope in Christ’s glorious greatness.
The greatest news in history is the truth that Jesus is LORD.
Q - How is Jesus Lord? What makes Jesus above all things?

God’s Word

Colossians 1:15–18 ESV
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.
PRAY
Jesus is more than our genie in the bottle. Jesus is more than our personal assistant to administrate our daily needs. tells us tonight that Jesus is worthy. Jesus is able. Jesus is supreme.
Jesus is able because of His supremacy.

I. Image of the invisible God

Jesus is the perfect representation of God. Jesus is the visible expression of the invisible God.
Q - You want to know what God is like?
tells us that Jesus is the image of the invisible God. Simply put, Jesus shows us God.
Illustration: coin, portraits, or statutes.

II. Firstborn of all creation

Firstborn is a term of rank more than a word of time. The right of the firstborn was the right of privilege and priority. It was the honored position in the family. Jesus is the firstborn - the highest rank - in all of creation.

III. Creator of all things

Jesus holds the highest rank in creation because He is the Creator of all things. There is nothing in the created order that Jesus did not create. Because Jesus is the Creator, Jesus has absolute supremacy over all creation.

IV. Before all things & the Sustainer of all things

Jesus’ power guarantees that the universe is under control and not chaotic.
Jesus sustains all things.
>> Students, if Jesus is able to sustain and hold all things in the universe together, you can hold you together.

V. Head of the body, the church

Sovereign over the church, because Jesus is the head. The church takes its direction from Jesus and is under His authority.

VI. Firstborn from the dead

Jesus was the first person to rise and never to die again. He is the person to conquer death first.

VII. Preeminent

All of these things are because Jesus is supreme.
All of these things flow from the truth that Jesus is supreme.
Jesus is able because of His supremacy.

Conclusion | You/We

Here’s the deal students. What we need to understand is that Jesus is able to hold you together because who He is. Jesus as EMT, Personal Trainer, Pharmacist, etc. cannot hold you together. But Jesus as Lord of all, who delivered us from sin can!
Paul continues in 1:19,
Colossians 1:19-
Colossians 1:19–23 ESV
19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. 21 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, 23 if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.
Jesus is able because of His supremacy.
Jesus is able to make you blameless before Him by his death & resurrection.
Jesus is able to make you stable
Jesus is able to make you steadfast
Jesus is able to sustain you.
Listen students, you must understand this truth of the gospel. It changes everything.

Application

Realize the AWESOMENESS of Jesus.
For some of you tonight, Jesus has been nothing more than a “life coach” instructing you through the “game of life.” Tonight, you must understand who Jesus truly is. When you realize who Jesus truly is & how awesome He is in Himself, the joy of knowing Jesus elevates to another level.
It’s the most amazing thing to know Jesus and rest in Him.
Knowing that Jesus is Lord and over all causes you to quit trying to be Lord and over all.
STOP! Believe in Him and rest in the gospel.
It’s because of all these truths of who Jesus is that we praise Him, that we celebrate Him, that we worship Him, that we give our lives to Him.
Jesus is able because of His supremacy.
Jesus is able for you students.
