Introduction

Jesus warned in his messages that we should not be like the parisees, that we should not seek our own - but seek the kingdom
In this series, we will go through the three chapters that make up the sermon on the mount - to figure out what it means to live life in the kingdom.
This large passage helps us understand that we come as we are as Christians, but that the work is never quite finished.
We’re going to see two main things in this passage: Commands and Mercy

Who is Being Spoken to?

Jesus is speaking to His disciples
We have to come to this clear decision - is Jesus speaking to us?
Today is the day to make that choice
Jesus was addressing people committed to Him - where do you stand?
It then says
Then He opened His mouth and taught them,
Jesus started teaching - so what did He have to say?

Blessed are the Poor in Spirit

Matthew 5:3
Matthew 5:3 NKJV
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Pillar NT Commentary has this to say bout the Beattitudes
“ completely and utterly destitute in the realm of the spirit. They recognize their lack of spiritual resources and therefore their complete dependence on God
completely and utterly destitute in the realm of the spirit. They recognize their lack of spiritual resources and therefore their complete dependence on God
Isaiah 66:2 NKJV
For all those things My hand has made, And all those things exist,” Says the Lord. “But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, And who trembles at My word.
It’s a call to understanding that without Jesus we cannot do the work of the kingdom.
Leon Morris, The Gospel according to Matthew, The Pillar New Testament Commentary (Grand Rapids, MI; Leicester, England: W.B. Eerdmans; Inter-Varsity Press, 1992), 95.”
