This is a passage in a series of accounts about the miraculous powers God entrusted to Elisha.
It’s an account on how God used Elisha to care for other Prophets and their families; but also to a young minister he helped tremendously.
One day the group of prophets came to Elisha and told him, “As you can see, this place where we meet with you is too small.
2 Let’s go down to the Jordan River, where there are plenty of logs.
There we can build a new place for us to meet.” “All right,” he told them, “go ahead.” 3 “Please come with us,” someone suggested.
“I will,” he said.
4 So he went with them.
When they arrived at the Jordan, they began cutting down trees.
5 But as one of them was cutting a tree, his ax head fell into the river.
“Oh, sir!” he cried.
“It was a borrowed ax!” 6 “Where did it fall?” the man of God asked.
When he showed him the place, Elisha cut a stick and threw it into the water at that spot.
Then the ax head floated to the surface.
7 “Grab it,” Elisha said.
And the man reached out and grabbed it.
Miracles may be performed directly by God or through a human agent.
Those recorded in Scripture include healing, raising the dead, miracles of nature and the casting out of demons.
Miracles demonstrate God’s greatness and power
AMP14 You are the God Who does wonders; You have demonstrated Your power among the peoples.
NLT37 O Lord, answer me!
Answer me so these people will know that you, O Lord, are God and that you have brought them back to yourself.”
38 Immediately the fire of the Lord flashed down from heaven and burned up the young bull, the wood, the stones, and the dust.
It even licked up all the water in the trench!
39 And when all the people saw it, they fell face down on the ground and cried out, “The Lord—he is God! Yes, the Lord is God!”
NLT4 We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord, about his power and his mighty wonders.
NLT42 As the boy came forward, the demon knocked him to the ground and threw him into a violent convulsion.
But Jesus rebuked the evil spirit and healed the boy.
Then he gave him back to his father.
43 Awe gripped the people as they saw this majestic display of God’s power.
While everyone was marveling at everything he was doing, Jesus said to his disciples,
Miracles bringing God’s judgment
NLT5 As soon as Ananias heard these words, he fell to the floor and died.
Everyone who heard about it was terrified.
NLT11 Watch now, for the Lord has laid his hand of punishment upon you, and you will be struck blind.
You will not see the sunlight for some time.”
Instantly mist and darkness came over the man’s eyes, and he began groping around begging for someone to take his hand and lead him.
Miracles which meet human need
The provision of food and water
NLT6 I will stand before you on the rock at Mount Sinai.
Strike the rock, and water will come gushing out.
Then the people will be able to drink.”
So Moses struck the rock as he was told, and water gushed out as the elders looked on.
NLT5 So Elijah did as the Lord told him and camped beside Kerith Brook, east of the Jordan.
6 The ravens brought him bread and meat each morning and evening, and he drank from the brook.
NLT19 One day the leaders of the town of Jericho visited Elisha.
“We have a problem, my lord,” they told him.
“This town is located in pleasant surroundings, as you can see.
But the water is bad, and the land is unproductive.”
20 Elisha said, “Bring me a new bowl with salt in it.”
So they brought it to him.
21 Then he went out to the spring that supplied the town with water and threw the salt into it.
And he said, “This is what the Lord says: I have purified this water.
It will no longer cause death or infertility.”
22 And the water has remained pure ever since, just as Elisha said.
NLT15 That evening the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late.
Send the crowds away so they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.”
16 But Jesus said, “That isn’t necessary—you feed them.”
17 “But we have only five loaves of bread and two fish!” they answered.
18 “Bring them here,” he said.
19 Then he told the people to sit down on the grass.
Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them.
Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he gave the bread to the disciples, who distributed it to the people.
20 They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftovers.
21 About 5,000 men were fed that day, in addition to all the women and children!
Healing
NLT16 Crowds came from the villages around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those possessed by evil spirits, and they were all healed.
NLT1 Peter and John went to the Temple one afternoon to take part in the three o’clock prayer service. 2 As they approached the Temple, a man lame from birth was being carried in.
Each day he was put beside the Temple gate, the one called the Beautiful Gate, so he could beg from the people going into the Temple.
3 When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for some money.
4 Peter and John looked at him intently, and Peter said, “Look at us!” 5 The lame man looked at them eagerly, expecting some money.
6 But Peter said, “I don’t have any silver or gold for you.
But I’ll give you what I have.
In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!” 7 Then Peter took the lame man by the right hand and helped him up.
And as he did, the man’s feet and ankles were instantly healed and strengthened.
8 He jumped up, stood on his feet, and began to walk!
Then, walking, leaping, and praising God, he went into the Temple with them.
9 All the people saw him walking and heard him praising God. 10 When they realized he was the lame beggar they had seen so often at the Beautiful Gate, they were absolutely astounded!
Deliverance / Exorcism
NLT18 This went on day after day until Paul got so exasperated that he turned and said to the demon within her, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.”
And instantly it left her.
NLT7 Many evil spirits were cast out, screaming as they left their victims.
And many who had been paralyzed or lame were healed.
The raising of the dead
NLT36 There was a believer in Joppa named Tabitha (which in Greek is Dorcas).
She was always doing kind things for others and helping the poor.
37 About this time she became ill and died.
Her body was washed for burial and laid in an upstairs room.
38 But the believers had heard that Peter was nearby at Lydda, so they sent two men to beg him, “Please come as soon as possible!”
39 So Peter returned with them; and as soon as he arrived, they took him to the upstairs room.
The room was filled with widows who were weeping and showing him the coats and other clothes Dorcas had made for them.
40 But Peter asked them all to leave the room; then he knelt and prayed.
Turning to the body he said, “Get up, Tabitha.”
And she opened her eyes!
When she saw Peter, she sat up! 41 He gave her his hand and helped her up.
Then he called in the widows and all the believers, and he presented her to them alive.
Miraculous help in trouble
NLT23 Then Jesus got into the boat and started across the lake with his disciples.
24 Suddenly, a fierce storm struck the lake, with waves breaking into the boat.
But Jesus was sleeping.
25 The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Lord, save us!
