Mission

Connecting people to God and others by creating a space where everyone can belong

Vision
To be a multiplying community developing deep, growing relationships with God, our world, and one another.
VALUES // CORE PRACTICES
These practices help us understand the level of investment required to contribute to and benefit from this faith community.
These practices help us understand the level of investment required to contribute to and benefit from this faith community.
1: Presence // Be faithful in worship.
Worship is our response to God’s love. In worship we are reminded who we are, and the grand story of which we are a part. Worship shapes us. But it’s not just something we do when we “need” it. Your presence is needed by those around you. And when we are present with God and one another, God uses us to encourage, challenge, love, serve, and pray for one another.
2: Relationships // Participate in a small group.
It is in relationship and conversation with other believers that we figure out how to walk the way of Jesus in every day life. Our Small groups meet on site and in homes to care for one another and talk about how to apply the Good News in our daily lives.
Today we are going to talk about the 3rd of our 6 Core Values and Practices Compassion.
This is actually one of those things that is easy to talk about because many of you already do such a great job of it…
Recently you have been called “Those Nazarenes” because of your compassion.
I got a text from Stefanie after the Back to School Bash that went like this “
Everyone was talking about “those Nazarene” or “the people in the blue shirts” how nice and helpful they were and they were so thankful. You Nazarene served over 400 people at the back to school bash…
This is a pretty incredible thing. It seems like every time I think I could not be prouder of you Nazarenes You go and do something that shows just how incredible you already are.
There were several churches that were invited to participate in this event and many of them gave money and other resources that were needed to make this event go…but you “Those Nazarenes” were the only ones to have a physical presence…You showed up!
I do not want to diminish the gifts of the other churches but at the end of the day money and things are not what develops relationships…Money and things are not solely able to take the gospel to our communities…
Giving money shows interest…Personal presence or showing up shows love…we show up for things and people we love.
You are saying we are involved in your life because we truly love you!
When you show up like you did at Vandaver Elementary School you are making a statement that is more powerful than any amount of money can make.
This is why Compassion is one of our core values. God calls us to Love our neighbors as ourselves…not just show interest.

Compassionate Churches Show up to Serve Wherever and Whenever they are needed

“A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road.

31 “By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. 32 A Temple assistant walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side.

33 “Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. 34 Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. 35 The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I’ll pay you the next time I’m here.’

36 “Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked.

37 The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.”

Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.”

The Samaritan did not simply show interest…He showed up…He overcame societal norms, He tended to the immediate need, He stuck with it until the man recovered.

Read this with me...Compassion // Serve your community.
We want to serve our neighbors well, not just as a church, but as individuals. We want to do this by partnering with organizations throughout our city and offering each of our unique gifts in service to our community.

This Core Value is important to practice not because it will help us grow…but because it will help others find a space to grow.

Being a good neighbor is more that having good intentions it is following through with acts of service to those who need it most not just those who deserve it most.
Not just as a Church but, as individuals
1 John 3:17 NLT
17 If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person?
That is a powerful verse of scripture…if a Christian notices someone in need and has the ability to help but chooses not to how can they say that they are allowing the Holy Spirit to guide them?
We want to do this by partnering with organizations through out our city.
Mark 9:40–41 NLT
40 Anyone who is not against us is for us. 41 If anyone gives you even a cup of water because you belong to the Messiah, I tell you the truth, that person will surely be rewarded.

Where and how can you serve our community as an individual? Not instead of being involved in the local church but in conjunction too? (Next Week)
It is more important that we value people not that people see our value.

This Core value and practice is intimately shown in communion…In that Jesus Christ showed us and the entire world the ultimate act of Compassion…Non of us deserved it…Non of us are owed it. Yet Jesus laid down His life even though he did not have to.

This is the ultimate act of Compassion…Non of us deserved it…Non of us are owed it. So we do not come to the table to take communion…we come to receive Communion.
5 You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. 6 Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to 7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, 8 he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.

(NLT)

Once we receive this sacrament let us not stop with thanks but go from here and do likewise.
So take communion and the reminder card and be dismissed to do likewise.
