Teaching that opposes the word of God
6:2b Timothy’s responsibility to teach and exhort
The command
The command
that can’t be ignored or neglected
A command that will expose the error of false teaching
that will expose the error of false teaching
A command that will reveal the truth
A command that will reveal the truth
The content
Both previous and following
Both previous and following teaching of Paul
Exhort these things
The form
Teaching with the intent for the hearer to learn by instruction
Exhorting with the intent to encourage and to call and implore the hearer to believe the truth of God’s word
6:3 Timothy’s obedience to teach will counter false teahing
The false teaching is another doctrine one that disagrees with the truth of God’s word
The false teacher does not hold to the truth of scriptures
The truth of God’s word is sound and healthy words free from disease. They are correct and accurate
The truth of God’s words include the words of the Lord Jesus Christ
Possibly Paul’s words as an authoritative spokesman for Christ
I believe he is referring the very words of Jesus Christ
And they were astonished at His teaching, for His word was with authority.
The true doctrine leads to godliness (piety)
They refuse to associate with or surrender to the truth
They refuse to adhere and be devoted followers of the truth of God’s word
The false teachers who teach such things
“3-5 This is the sort of thing you should teach, and if anyone tries to teach some doctrinal novelty which is not compatible with sound teaching (which we base on Christ’s own words and which leads to Christ-like living), then he is a conceited idiot! His mind is a morbid jumble of disputation and argument, things which lead to nothing but jealousy, quarrelling, insults and malicious innuendoes—continual wrangling, in fact, among men of warped minds who have lost their real hold on the truth but hope to make some profit out of the Christian religion.” JB Philips
6:4-5 False teachers are “conceited idiots”
They are deceived - Filled with pride yet clueless
Their pride has deceived them making them think they are wise when in reality they are foolish
This is not an indictment on scholarship but upon liberal theology
They are diseased - Obsessed is to be sick or ill
Obsessed with disputes, debates or controversies
Constantly seeking something new
Constantly questioning the word of God
Obsessed with arguments over words
The meaning of words?
The words of Scripture?
They are divisive and destructive causing
Envy is to cause jealousy, resentment, or to be spiteful
Strife is to cause fighting or quarreling
Reviling is to blaspheme or slander
Evil suspicions is wicked or worthless conjectures or guessing
Useless wranglings of men is to cause constant friction or irritation
Destitute of the truth is to defraud or rob the truth
These false teachers are the ones whose minds have been robbed of the truth
They must have possessed it at one time but it never possessed their heart and mind
They had knowledge of the facts of the gospel but it was never accompanied by genuine faith
They are driven by greed
They see religion as means to gain wealth
Stay clear Timothy so as not to endorse them or to be influenced by them
Godliness with contentment
6:6 True godliness is great gain
Godliness is not a means to be materially rich but gains the great riches found in Jesus Christ
the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,
Ephesians 1:
Ephesians 3:
To me, who am less than the least of all the saints, this grace was given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,
Godliness ruled by contentment
Godliness ruled by contentment
Contentment is to be satisfied
Contentment is to believe what one has is sufficient and is enough
Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.
Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead,
Philippians 3:11-13
6:7 Material things are temporary
Then Job arose, tore his robe, and shaved his head; and he fell to the ground and worshiped. And he said:
“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
And naked shall I return there.
The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away;
Blessed be the name of the Lord.”
In all this Job did not sin nor charge God with wrong.
Job 1:20
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
6:8 The necessities of life is all we need
Food
Clothing which might include the thought of shelter
If this all we have we are to be content
If God blesses us with more we should be thankful but not claim ownership
6:9-10 The warning about of living for riches
The warning is to those who wish to be rich no matter what their present situation poor or rich
This wish leads to an unexpected fall into temptation or snare
When the desire for material things rules our hearts we begin to lay up treasures on this earth and not heaven
This wish leads to many and foolish lusts which result in destruction and perdition
Judas would be a perfect example. He loved money more than Jesus Christ
