WELCOME/INTRO:
Why do we do this? Why are we here this morning? Is there any benefit to getting up, getting ready, and coming to church?
What are some reasons you come to church?
(community, help, friendship, etc.)
BLIND PUZZLE GAME:
TEACHING:
There are many reasons why we need to be around other believers. But I think the most important reason is because it reminds us that the church is not a building, it is the gathering of people who follow Jesus. We just happen to call our building a church, but the Church that Jesus talked about, the ecclesia, is a gathering of people who follow Him and proclaim the good news of His death and resurrection for the forgiveness of sin.
Who can tell me what the two ordinances are that we as baptists observe? (baptism and communion [Lord’s Supper])
Baptism is important and it is worth talking about, but we are going to spend the majority of our time together today talking about The Lord’s Supper. We are going to talk about what it is…and why we do it.
WHAT:
The Lord’s Supper is what we call the meal that Jesus had with His disciples during the Passover celebration. Who knows what Passover is?
Did you know that God told the Israelites to celebrate the Passover all the way back when they were in Egypt? This wasn’t something they just decided to do as a reminder, God commanded them to celebrate this and teach their children about it.
27 you are to reply, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to the Lord, for he passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt when he struck the Egyptians and spared our homes.’ ” So the people knelt low and worshiped.
24 “Keep this command permanently as a statute for you and your descendants.
25 When you enter the land that the Lord will give you as he promised, you are to observe this ceremony.
26 When your children ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’
27 you are to reply, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to the Lord, for he passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt when he struck the Egyptians and spared our homes.’ ” So the people knelt low and worshiped.
Exodus 12
27 you are to reply, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to the Lord, for he passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt when he struck the Egyptians and spared our homes.’ ” So the people knelt low and worshiped.
28 Then the Israelites went and did this; they did just as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron.
Exodus 12:24-27
There was a whole ceremony with songs you were supposed to sing and everything. But when Jesus leads the Passover meal He adds a wrinkle to it.
Topic: Sin, fulfillment in Christ Passage: ;
Matthew 26:26-
26 As they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take and eat it; this is my body.”
27 Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks, he gave it to them and said, “Drink from it, all of you.
28 For this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
29 But I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”
Aim and Point:
He used the unleavened bread and the wine as symbols for His body and His blood…what do you think went through the disciples minds at that time?
To answer the following question. If the Bible is telling a story, why do we need to hear it?
Remember that a few days ago in the story, Jesus rode into town and the whole place went bananas! People were shouting and throwing their coats on the ground.
The crowds…and the disciples…were expecting something different from Jesus. It wasn’t His blood that was supposed to be shed, it was Rome’s blood that was supposed to be shed because they thought the Messiah had come to save them from Rome.
But Jesus explains that it is His body that will be broken, His blood that will be shed. And He says it’s because of a new covenant...
Well, that was then, this is now…why do WE practice the Lord’s Supper?
1 Corinthians 11:23-
23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took bread,
24 and when he had given thanks, broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
ry long, in fact, sin can seem really fun at first…but after a while you will notice that you want to stop, but you can’t. Adam and Eve weren’t looking to disobey God, they were looking for a full life. And it was a sin because they were looking outside of their relationship with God for fulfillment. Now don’t get me wrong, it was an act of rebellion to eat the fruit, God plainly told them not to and they did…but they thought they had a good reason to, and you will always find a way to justify your sin. But you need to know that it will always end the same way, you will just need more and more to get that feeling back and before long that feeling will be gone and all you will have to show for it is a nasty habit or two.
Sin, the first recorded sin, was not just blind rebellion. Eve believed that God was holding back from her and she thought eating of the fruit would allow her to live her life more fully.
We take the Lord’s Supper:
Sin does not multiply our joy, it robs it. (Tell a personal story about how falling and flying feel the same)
To remember
Have you ever forgotten about something really important? I have! It’s hard when you are busy and you have so many things distracting you to remember stuff sometimes! That is why we pause, and remember...
Sin cannot satisfy us for very long, in fact, sin can seem really fun at first…but after a while you will notice that you want to stop, but you can’t. But you need to know that it will always end the same way, you will just need more and more to get that feeling back and before long that feeling will be gone and all you will have to show for it is a nasty habit or two.
that Jesus initiated and instituted a new covenant
Why is it important to remember the new covenant? What does that even mean? If there is a new covenant, does that mean that there was an older covenant? What was that? If God initiated the old covenant by the blood of a lamb and Jesus is instituting a new covenant how will He ratify the new covenant?
by laying down His life
Jesus wouldn’t use the blood of an animal to seal this new covenant, He would be the sacrifice. He willingly laid down His life. But why?
so that we could be in relationship with God!
Jesus became sin, even thought He knew no sin () or to put it another way, He took our sin but He didn’t have any of His own because He followed the Old Testament Law (the old covenant) perfectly and we can’t.
That is why we are serious about the Lord’s Supper. That is why we want to make sure that we are right with God, and that we are right with our brothers and sisters, moms and dads, neighbors, friends, anyone we have a face to face relationship with…we want to be in good standing so that nothing gets in the way of us interacting with God and remembering what Jesus did for us on the cross.
Questions:
1. What is sin? Is it just doing something wrong?
2. Were Adam and Eve more satisfied and fulfilled after they sinned? Why or Why not?
3. If sin doesn’t fulfill and satisfy us (long term satisfaction), what (Who) does?
Other thoughts and notes:
Sin steals our joy and gets in the way of our relationship with God. Ironically, we put more and more in the way of a more full life trying to live a full life. We have the formula wrong. Denying ourselves in favor of God’s way of living leads to a full life. We think that denying ourselves will lead to an incomplete life.
Thanks!
