Secular history has him released from exile about 95 ad

History also teaches he was in Ephesus before and after his exile where he cared for Mary, the mother of Jesus and that he died peacefully there as an old man. From Ephesus he wrote John and 1,2,3 John. The author of 2nd and 3rd John identifies himself as “the elder”, while the writer of 1 John is not self identified, but again early church leaders (2nd and 3rd century) claim John as author.
