We must read the Scriptures with understanding.

Review of the Setting

Jesus had mentioned in His lament over Jerusalem that there house would be left desolate
This prompted the disciples to remark to Him about the awesomeness of the temple buildings
Jesus announced that this temple would be destroyed
This prompted the disciples to ask two questions:
When will the temple be destroyed?
What will be the sign of your coming which will mark the end of the age?
Jesus began the body of this discourse with three directives:
Don’t be misled
Persevere through the inevitable trials
Proclaim the gospel of the kingdom throughout the world
As we move into our passage for this morning we are going to determine who Jesus is addressing, and consider the things which these folks must understand.

Jesus is Addressing the Reader

Who is “The Reader?”
What is it that is being read?

Things Which the Reader Must Understand

The Reader Must Understand the Nature of Prophetic Fulfillment

Final Fulfillment
The midpoint of the Tribulation Period
The Anti-Christ will be revealed before all this occurs
2 Thessalonians 2:3–4 NASB95PARA
Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God.
The Abomination will occur at the midpoint of the Tribulation Period
Daniel 9:27 NASB95PARA
And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate.”
Daniel 12:11 NASB95PARA
From the time that the regular sacrifice is abolished and the abomination of desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days.
Revelation 13:5 NASB95PARA
There was given to him a mouth speaking arrogant words and blasphemies, and authority to act for forty-two months was given to him.
Daniel 12:11 NASB95PARA
From the time that the regular sacrifice is abolished and the abomination of desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days.
The Reader Must Take Quick Action to Avoid Being Entrapped
Revelation 12:14 NASB95PARA
But the two wings of the great eagle were given to the woman, so that she could fly into the wilderness to her place, where she was nourished for a time and times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent.
Look at verses 16-20.
Flee immediately
The Potential for Difficult & Limited Travel Conditions
The Reader Must Understand The Great Tribulation
Look at verses 21-22.
The Great Tribulation is the last 3 1/2 years of the 70th Week of Daniel
It begins with the abomination of desolation
The inhabitants of the earth will experience the greatest outpouring of God’s wrath that has ever been seen or ever will be seen
Due to the outpouring of the God’s wrath the Anti-Christ will make war with the elect
The elect are Tribulation Saints
The spiritual remnant of Israel
Most will be Jewish
Some will be Gentiles
If those days had not been shortened, none would survive
Shortened regarding the length of the period?
Shortened regarding the extent of calamity (i.e. fall short of total calamity)?
Shortened in amount of daylight hours?
MacArthur points out that
“At least three times during the Great Tribulation the heavenly bodies that give light to the earth will be radically altered in ways that will progressively reduce the daylight...” (pg. 45)
These would be during the sixth seal, the fourth trumpet, and the fifth bowl judgments.
The Reader Must Understand there will be pretenders seeking to deceive
Look at verses 23-26.
The emphasis seems to be on less public situations in which these false messiah’s will present themselves.
The Reader Must Understand Christ’s Return will be Public and Recognized by all

How Should We Then Live?

We should be students of the Scriptures
2 Timothy 3:16–17 NIV84
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
We should sit under sound teaching
2 Timothy 4:3–4 NASB95PARA
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.
We should live separated lives
Titus 2:11–13 NKJV
For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,
These things are how the believers should live.
Unbelievers must flee from the wrath that is coming upon the children of disobedience
The only way to escape this wrath is cling to Jesus Christ as your Savior. You can do this by recognizing that He, the eternal God and Creator of the world, humbled Himself by becoming man. He lived the perfect life which no one else could live. He fulfilled God’s righteous requirement. He bore the sin’s of those who place their faith in Him on the cross of suffering. He rose triumphantly from the grave. And is now seated in heaven where He is constantly interceding on behalf of His own.
Let’s pray.
Closing Song: #682
Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah
Numbers 6:24–26 CSB
“May the Lord bless you and protect you; may the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; may the Lord look with favor on you and give you peace.” ’
