Intro:

TS: In today’s text, we see the first admonition in Hebrews. There are several given in Hebrews and are meant to call our attention to God’s Word and that we obey it.
Hebrews 2:1 ESV
Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.
We are encouraged to to pay attention and not drift from what we have heard.
We live in a time when people want new things. They don’t want hand-me-downs. In fact, they will spend $ buying clothes we used to throw out as being worn out, but they want them new, yet distressed.
We must take heed to not allow ourselves to drift away from the truth. Hold to the gospel!
Our author is admonishing us to pay attention to the great salvation we have received.
Hebrews 2:1–8 ESV
Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. It has been testified somewhere, “What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him? You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor, putting everything in subjection under his feet.” Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him.

First, Pay close attention

We need to remember that our writer was primarily writing to believers in Jesus
Although there is great value here for anyone who is willing to read and listen and apply God’s word
Let me read for you
Hebrews 2:1 ESV
Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.
What do you think that meant??
What do you think that meant??
The author is urging us to

Listen closely.

Remember what we noted from Hebrews Chapter 1 about the Hebrew’s knowledge of angels?
The Hebrews who were the recipient of the Letter believed in the power of angels through the Old Testament.
They knew and heard God’s Word through the Old Testament; they knew the power of angels and the Promised Savior/Messiah!
Those Hebrew Christians were being told to believe in the Old Testament truths but the focus now is on Jesus Christ, what He did and say and what was said about Him through the disciples!

Listen closely to the gospel

They had heard the message before
Those Hebrew Christians were being told to believe in the Old Testament truths but the focus now is on Jesus Christ, what He did and say and what was said about Him through the disciples!
They heard the good news of Jesus
They should have known these things.
This isn’t anything new.

So that you don’t drift.

They are told why
to prevent drift
The Greek word used here is a nautical term
They needed a constant course correction.
It is like a boat which comes untied and drifts off.
If you set sail on the ocean, a drift of 1 degree here
The author warns of a slow drifting away from the truth.
A true born again person will never fall away ultimately.
However, there are many who make a false profession.
1 John 2:19–20 ESV
They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us. But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge.
1 John 2:20 ESV
But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge.
Even though we cannot lose our salvation, we can begin to drift.

Second,

We can grow lukewarm
We can drift into error
We can loose our ministry effectiveness
Hebrews 2:2 ESV
For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution,

Second, Don’t neglect your salvation.

Hebrews 2:3 ESV
how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard,
Hebrews 2:2–4 ESV
For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.
Heb 2:2-

Third, There is only one way of Escape

Hebrews 2:3 ESV
how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard,

The Message was Reliable

Hebrews 2:4 ESV
while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.
First from the angels
often delivered to the Prophets
Then from Jesus
By Apostles and Witnesses
Acts 2:22–24 ESV
“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.
By by signs and wonders
By by signs and wonders
Acts 2:22-24
Died according to God’s plan
attested by sings and wonders
Raised incorruptible
The Message is the only way of escape
There is no other gospel
Tehre is not side door into salvation
We are saved by grace alone , through faith alone, in Christ alone.
Hold to the truth and proclaim it.
We are faced with temptation to compromise the message at every turn
It is old fashioned
It needs to be freshened up
It doesn’t fit our modern times.

Conclusion:

Drifting is easy
Just do nothing
In order to drift you just have to go with the flow
Do what feels good
Stop doing anything that moves you in any direction
But especially doing anything that moves you in a positive direction
This morning I want to us remember to guard against the drift.
Know the truth
Stand in the truth
Share the truth
In the process how we can avoid it
But first we must look at some signs that would indicate that we are about to begin drifting
I, like the writer of Hebrews am talking to believers in this first part
If you are an unbeliever here this morning I urge you as our writer urged the unbelievers in that day
to listen as well
