Jesus gives final instruction to the 11 apostles and then ascends into heaven. EXPLANATIONS Jesus gives the apostles their ministry John 20:21-23 As He was sent to represent the Father, He is sending them to represent Him. He gives them the Holy Spirit to be on them so they can remember and understand His instruction. On the day of Pentecost, they will receive the Holy Spirit to live inside of them permanently. He gives them authority to deal with sin In the Gospel message they can say, if you repent and accept the payment of Jesus, your sin is forgiven. As leaders, when others try to hinder God’s work, they can declare God’s judgment; use church discipline. Thomas declares the deity of Jesus when He says my Lord and my God. Jesus accepts the title of God; if He is not deity, He is guilty of blasphemy. Jesus commissions the apostles to develop mature followers. They are to explain what He did, lead people to a commitment when they are ready and teach them to understand Scripture so they can become mature. Jesus ascends into heaven and will return in the same way - in the clouds. It does not say He will return to the same place. Jesus re-commissions Simon Jesus does not use the name Peter (rock) because as yet he is not stable and firm; he uses his old name, Simon. The word know means divine knowledge. The word love has 2 different meanings. Phileo is love based on feeling, devotion, loyalty - it is a response determined by feeling. Agapao means obedience, doing what is right - it is a response determined by the will. At the Passover meal, Peter had bragged in front of the other apostles. If all of them left Jesus, he never would, meaning he thought his commitment was greater. q LAST 40 DAYS Page 2 EXPLANATIONS Jesus re-commissions Simon continued Jesus, now 2 weeks later in front of the apostles, asks him… (paraphrased for clarity of meaning) Do you still say you will obey Me more than these other apostles? (agapao) Peter: No, I cannot say that. But just as Your divine knowledge knew the brashness and over-confidence I had before, You know the depth of feeling and devotion I have for You now. (phileo) Jesus: Can you say you will obey equal to these other apostles? Peter: No, I cannot even say that But You know the depth of feeling and devotion I have for You now. Jesus: Simon, are you sure you have depth of feeling and devotion for Me now? (phileo) Peter: Sadly, that is all I am sure of, but I have discovered my limitations. You know my depth of devotion. Peter has shown honesty, humility and reality. As a result, he will have a 3-fold ministry to… …teach basics to new believers feed my lambs …watch over and care for believers tend my sheep …give mature believers more advanced teaching feed sheep In later years, he will die a martyr by crucifixion, which happened in the mid-60’s AD. JEWISH TEACHING about the Memra (Aramaic), Logos (Word), in distinction from the Greek philosophical Logos, (Word) From an in-depth Old Testament study, Jewish rabbis developed 6 concepts about the Word as it related to God. 1. The Word was separate from God - but also the same as God John 1:1 The rabbis could never explain it - they just knew it was fact. He sends His command to the earth; His word runs swiftly. Psa. 145:15 John 1:3 By the word of the Lord, the heavens were made. Psa. 33:6 2. The Word created things 3. The Word brought salvation - physically or spiritually. John 1:12 God spoke - His Word gave instruction to Moses about crossing the Reed Sea. 4. The Word was the visible form of God - the Shechinah glory / light John 1:14 Moses saw a burning bush - the Word said, take off your shoes; you are standing on holy ground. Ex. 3:2 5. The Word made God’s covenants. John 1:17 The Lord made a covenant and said… Gen. 15:18 Gen. 15:1 John 1:18 The Word of the Lord came to Abraham…I am Your shield -Your very great reward. 6. The Word revealed God. John is saying, The Greek Logos was just an it, an idea or expression. Jesus is the Jewish Memra, the real Logos. He is a person revealed in the Old Testament as: Deity, Creator, Savior, the visible presence of God, the maker of the New Covenant and the revelation of what God the Father is like. APPLICATION As we studied the life of Jesus here on earth, we may have wished we could have been there – to see Him, to follow Him, to listen to His teaching and watch Him work miracles. However, we forget about the limitations there would have been. Even if we could have followed Him full time, we might not have been able to hear all that He said. We would not have heard what He said to the apostles. We would not have been able to personally talk with Him anywhere at anytime. The good news is that because He returned to heaven and sent the Holy Spirit, even in the 21st century, we can enjoy a better relationship. The moment we accept His payment for our sin, the Holy Spirit comes to live within us. As a result… We can talk with Jesus anytime and anywhere, with the assurance that He hears us and will answer. We have Scripture – God’s Word – that gives us all the teaching He wants us to have. The Holy Spirit helps us understand what Scripture means and how to use it in our lives. We see and experience God’s hand in our lives, the lives of those around us and thruout the world. Our relationship with Jesus, as well as God the Father and the Holy Spirit, can be far more personal now than it would have been in the first century. The important questions is, Are we utilizing the opportunity? Are we enjoying the privilege? q LAST 40 DAYS Page 3 THE MESSIAH IN THE OLD TESTAMENT There are some 300 prophecies or predictions about the Messiah in the Old Testament. Some are very specific while others are vague or very general. Some are about His genealogy or character. Some are about what He would do while others are about what would be done to Him. Some are about His first coming and were fulfilled, while, by far, many more are about His second coming and His kingdom and are as yet unfulfilled. The following 31 predictions from the Old Testament are very specific and are about Messiah’s first coming. The Gospel writers make a point to show that they were fulfilled in Jesus (they were true of Jesus). By doing so, they were declaring to the world, “Jesus is the promised Messiah of the Old Testament”.
