Lesson #16 – LIFE OF JESUS Basics About Jesus Before starting this lesson, read Romans 8: verses 1-4 and verses 33-39; Ephesians 1:20-23; Philippians 2:6-11; Colossians 2:13-15 Over the last 15 lessons, we have studied the life of Jesus. We have looked at what He said and what He did. Now let’s use that information to get the bigger picture and see how it defines historic Christianity. Who Jesus is What He did on the cross, The results of Jesus’ payment The ministry He now has in heaven WHO JESUS IS Jesus is DEITY, meaning He has the same kind of nature as God the Father (see endnote for more verses) While He was here on earth, He claimed Deity numerous times and the Jewish Sanhedrin understood that claim. > When talking to the Sanhedrin – the Jewish religious leadership – Jesus told them, I and My Father are One. Jn 10:30 They immediately picked up stones to stone Him, saying, You as a mere man are claiming to be God – deity. Jn 10:33 > When talking with the apostles, He told them, I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father. Jn. 16:28 > When praying, He talks about the glory He had with the Father before the world began. Jn. 17:5 To say Jesus is Deity does not mean He is God the Father. It means He has the same qualities and character as God the Father. They are equals but 2 different Persons. In historic Christianity, there are 5 essential beliefs: the deity of Jesus, His virgin birth, His payment on the cross for our disobedience, His physical resurrection and the Bible as the Word of God. The DEITY OF JESUS is important and essential for 3 reasons. 1. To make payment for sin. If Jesus were only human, He could have only made payment for one other human. It is because of His deity that the payment was sufficient for everyone. 2. To give eternal life to those who accept His payment. You cannot give what you do not have. If Jesus did not have eternity inherent in His being, He could not give eternal life to us. 3. To give us a new nature with the power to live a changed life. Jesus is HUMANITY, meaning He has the same kind of nature as we do, except without sin. He was born of the virgin Mary. This is another essential belief of historic Christianity because… > It was the only way Jesus as deity could also become humanity, with a physical body. In order to make payment for our disobedience in our place, He had to be one of us – humanity. > It was the only way Jesus could be born as a human, but without a sin nature. Because Adam represented the human race, it is thru Adam and the male gender that the sin nature is passed from generation to generation. This is what Paul meant when he said, For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. Romans 5:19 This means, if Joseph had been the biological father, Jesus would have been born with a sin nature. His payment on the cross would have only been for His own sin. But with a human mother and a body created by the Holy Spirit, He was fully human, yet holy and without sin. …Jesus, the Son of God,…tempted as we are, yet without sin. Heb 4:14-15 WHO JESUS IS continued Jesus has 2 NATURES – divine and human He had a human body, human soul, human spirit and human nature. He was a real person with one body. However, inside His body He had not just one nature but 2. There was a human nature and a divine nature. He was complete in His deity and complete in His humanity. The theological term for this is the hypostatic union. It is important to know how these 2 natures existed within Him. They were never fused or intermingled; they were always completely separate.. They were like 2 compartments side by side. Each was complete - perfect humanity; perfect deity. This means Jesus could only respond from one nature at a time. He was either responding from His humanity, or from His deity. Jesus came to this earth in agreement with the Father that most of the time He would operate out of His human nature. However, there would be times when He would operate from His deity nature. (read on to know the exceptions) The CONTRAST OF THESE 2 NATURES Ordinarily, these would be considered glaring contradictions, but they make perfect sense when you know one list is describing His human nature and the other His divine nature. When He was hungry, sad or tired, it was from His HUMAN nature. When He said, My Father is greater than I. I only do what My Father commands Me. No one knows when the Son of Man will return, not even …the Son, it was from His HUMAN nature. However the Father gave Him permission to draw from or operate out His DIVINE nature … To save His life so He would not be killed before the time of the cross To know a person’s thoughts or about their life when presenting Himself as the promised Messiah. To work miracles that required the power of creation. The SEPARATON OF THESE 2 NATURES – Why they were kept separate. Jesus agreed to live within the limitation of humanity … In order to face temptation and show us how to handle it Can you imagine our reaction if Jesus was always using His deity along with the humanity? We would be cynical when He talks about handling temptation. Our response would be - Anyone can handle temptation when they have deity to draw on. In fact, how can it even be real temptation? In order to understand our feelings and limitations. If Jesus had operated from His deity while He was here on earth, , we would never believe He could understand our feelings and limitations. It would limit our ability to relate to Him. In order to show it is possible to live obedient to the Father and dependent on the power of the Spirit. He lived life as we are to live it in our humanity. 2 Jesus agreed to live within the limitation of HUMANITY … In order to be separated from the Father, physically die and be resurrected. In order to represent us and make payment for us. Jesus also had a complete, but separate DIVINE nature In order to represent the Father. He said, If you have seen Me, you have seen the Father. I came to reveal the Father. In order to give infinite value to His payment - so it could be sufficient for all. When Jesus came to this earth, He agreed never to draw upon His deity unless the Father allowed Him to. This could only happen if His humanity and deity were kept totally separate and independent of each other. This is WHO JESUS IS IT IS WHO HE IS, THAT GIVES VALUE TO WHAT HE DID is WHAT JESUS DID ON THE CROSS To understand the physical and spiritual event that happened 2000 years ago, we need a definition and explanations. First a DEFINITION Because of our experience, we would define death as “physical loss.” But in its most basic form, death means “separation.” In physical death it is separation of life from the body. In spiritual death it is separation from God. So Paul writes to believers in Jesus, saying, You were dead in trespasses and sins – meaning, You were separated from God. So we have the basic definition of death - separation. THE PROBLEM God and heaven are perfect. So only that which is perfect can enter heaven and live in God’s presence. This means we are out of luck. No matter how hard we try or how good we get, it can never be good enough. Because we are not perfect, we can never qualify to live with God. We must be eternally separated from Him. But God is also love. He wants to enjoy us now and wants us to be with Him for all eternity. So to use human terms, God the Father has a dilemma. In His love, He wants to let us in. But His perfection cannot let us in because we would ruin heaven with our imperfection. Pena lty of sin There was only one way to solve the dilemma. If someone who was perfect would come and take our imperfection, make payment for it - then give us His perfection. That is precisely what Jesus did. He came as deity and as one of us. He was perfect in every way. While on the cross, all the imperfection and sin of everyone in the world for all time was dumped on the humanity of Jesus. Immediately there was darkness. It was evidence that God the Father had separated Himself from the humanity of Jesus. He turned His back and pulled away. All relationship between Father and Son in His humanity was broken. There was no support, no help, no presence - nothing of the Father was there for Jesus in His humanity. Pa yment for sin SEPARATION FROM THE FATHER e im t l al s or su f e l al n J f o o n ut si p At the end of the 3 hours Jesus cried out, My God my God, why have You forsaken me? This is in the form of a question, not because He does not know, but because He is quoting from Psa. 22. All the Jews knew the Psalm was about the Messiah. By quoting the very first verse of this Psalm, Jesus is saying He is the promised Messiah. He is letting everyone know the reason for the 3 hours of pitch-black darkness and what He has just been thru. 3 This separation from the Father is the penalty of sin - what all human beings must experience because they are not perfect. This separation is also the payment for sin - sufficient for everyone. When Jesus cries out, It has been finished, He is saying, I experienced the penalty of sin. I have made the payment for sin. That payment is now on deposit with God the Father. For each of us, we have only 2 options regarding our eternity. We can make the payment ourselves and be separated from God for all eternity. Or we can accept the payment Jesus made for us. When we tell God, I accept the payment of Jesus, He does a transfer on the books. All our sin and imperfection is credited to Jesus’ account and all the perfection of Jesus is credited to our account. Notice it is credited to our account. God could have waited until we got to heaven and then given us the perfection. But that would mean we could have no enjoyment of His presence now because we certainly are not perfect in our daily life. So God right now credits us with the perfection of Jesus, and from His point of view, He sees us in Jesus. That means we are qualified to enjoy a relationship with God now and to live with Him for all eternity. Jesus’ Account Sheet My Account Sheet Name: Jesus - humanity Name: My name Final evaluation: Not perfect Perfect Final evaluation: Payment required Separated from God For ever with God Payment required None Separated from God Perfect Not perfect How God the Father sees me, when I accept the payment of Jesus This is the Gospel message – it is the message of historic Christianity. However, when some people hear it, they have logical and reasonable questions. For example, If Jesus is deity, how could He be separated from the Father? Deity is omnipresent. If Jesus is deity, how could He die? Deity is eternal. This is why the 2 natures of Jesus had to be kept completely apart. It is absolutely true, that in His DEITY nature, Jesus could not be separated from the Father. in His DEITY nature, Jesus could not die. But His HUMANITY nature was kept apart and distinct. It was His humanity nature that experienced the penalty and made the payment. It was His humanity nature that was separated and His humanity nature that died. It was in His humanity nature that He represented us This does not mean His Deity was unimportant. Jesus’ humanity could only make payment for one person. It was His Deity that gave infinite or unlimited value to His payment. This made it sufficient for all people for all time. If Jesus died in our place, then why do we still die? Because it was not Jesus’ physical death that made our payment. It was His spiritual death - His separation from God the Father. That separation was for 3 hours - from noon until 3:00 p.m. With that, the payment was finished. The proof is - The lifting of the darkness, Jesus’ words, It has been finished, He addresses God as Father – the relationship is restored with no more separation. The wages or penalty of sin is “death” – spiritual separation from God. So the payment for sin has to be spiritual death – spiritual separation from God. 4 Jesus made the distinction between the 2 kinds of death just before raising Lazarus. He told Mary, He who believes in Me will live, even tho he dies physically. He who believes in Me will never die spiritually. John 11:25-26 THE RESULTS OF JESUS’ PAYMENT FOR JESUS His glory and power will be fully shown. All will acknowledge His deity Philippians 2:6-11 Jesus, who being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God (the Father) something to be grasped. Altho Jesus had the same kind of nature as God the Father - divine nature with the glory and power of deity - He never considered using it for His own benefit or advantage. Phil. 2:6 But emptied Himself…, being born in the likeness of men 2:7 When Jesus came to this earth, He received a human nature and still had all of His divine nature. But He chose to veil or hide the glory of His deity and limit the power of His deity. And being found in human form - no evidence of His glory, 2:8 He humbled Himself and became obedient to death, even death on a cross - no evidence of His power. Therefore God (the Father) has highly exalted Him and gave Him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven, and on earth and under the earth. 2:9-10 Because Jesus is deity, He receives worship by angels in heaven and from us, His children on earth. Eventually even angels in Satan’s kingdom will have to bow the knee in recognition of His deity. And every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father. 2:11 Eventually, every one - humans and angels will acknowledge Jesus as deity, whether they believe in Him or not. He is greater than any leader, king or empire Ephesians 1:20 The power of God (the Father) which He exerted in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under His feet and appointed Him to be head over everything for the Church, which is His body. The mighty Roman army commanded the physical death of Jesus, but now He is greater than any leader, king or empire. This is because He is deity as well as humanity. He declared victory over Satan and his angels. Colossians 2:15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them by the cross. In the Philippians verses, Paul said that when Jesus came to this earth, He EMPTIED HIMSELF. I doubt any of us have fully comprehended the sacrifice Jesus made – what He gave up or put to one side. From the worship of angels to the rejection of people (spit upon, slapped and whipped). From commanding the angels to being commanded by the Father. From the glory of deity to the plainness of humanity. From heaven’s purity to earth’s impurity. From no limitations to complete limitation in time, strength and energy From painless existece to the ultimate of suffering. From eternal life to the experience of death From being omniscient to having to learn and develop knowledge From being omnipresent to only being in one place at one time, having to walk from town to town. From being complete in Himself to having needs, longings, aspirations and receiving help from angels. 5 THE RESULTS OF JESUS’ PAYMENT FOR SATAN Satan and his angels have been defeated Colossians 2:15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them by the cross. I suggest this is what Jesus did while in paradise in His declaration to the spirits or evil angels in prison - in confinement. He told them He won, He defeated their leader Satan and they would be under God’s judgment forever. The actual defeat will not come until later, but it is guaranteed that it will happen. (see 1 Peter 3:18-19 For Christ also suffered once for sins… He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. After being made alive, He went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits.) FOR BELIEVERS IN JESUS Colossians 2:14 Full payment for our disobedience He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code with its regulations that was against us and that stood opposed to us; He took it away, nailing it to the cross. Jesus made payment for all our sins. He removed all the laws that provided forgiveness thru animal sacrifice. When Jesus was nailed to the cross, those laws – the code - was symbolically nailed with Him. They died with Him. Jesus, as the Lamb of God, is now our only means of forgiveness. Romans 8:1 No condemnation Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. When we accept His payment, God the Father credits the perfection of Jesus to our account. He now chooses to see us in Jesus. He no longer sees our sin. He only sees the payment of Jesus. Romans 8:33 Nothing can separate us from eternity with God. Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died, more than that, who was raised to life - is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?…Vs. 39, No in all these things we are more than conquerors thru Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. When we accept Jesus’ payment, His separation is counted in place of ours. Therefore we can be sure nothing can separate us from Him. IN SUMMARY THE RESULTS OF JESUS’ PAYMENT FOR JESUS His glory and power of deity will be fully shown His Deity will be acknowledged by all He is seen as greater than any leader, king or empire He declared victory over Satan and his angels FOR SATAN He and his angels are defeated FOR BELIEVERS IN JESUS Our eternity bill has been paid by Jesus We have no condemnation Nothing can ever separate us from eternity with God 6 THE MINISTRY OF JESUS’ NOW As we have studied the life of Jesus here on earth, we may wish we could have experienced His ministry at that time - to see Him, to follow Him, to listen to His teaching and watch Him work miracles. But the good news is that we can enjoy an even better part of Jesus’ ministry now that He has gone back to heaven. The moment we accept His payment, He has a personal, continual ministry in our lives. 1. He is our defense lawyer - In his letter, the apostle John says, …, I wrote this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have One who speaks to the Father in our defense - Jesus Christ the Righteous One 1 John 2:1 Once we have accepted Jesus’ payment, our eternity question is taken care of . He was separated from the Father in our place, so we do not have to be. Our eternity bill is paid in full. We are in God’s family, but we are not perfect. So what about the things we do wrong as believers. Can our disobedience keep us out of heaven? The answer is no because of Jesus’ ministry as defense lawyer. The name “Satan” means “adversary.” The name “Devil” means “accuser.” Satan loves to live up to his names. Every time a member of God’s family does something wrong, Satan goes running to God the Father to accuse us. It goes something like this, God, did You see what “he” just did? Did You hear what “she” said and know what she was thinking? Kick them out of Your family. You could not possibly let them live with You thruout eternity. Look what they did and said. But just as soon as Satan finishes the accusation, Jesus rises to our defense and says, Wait a minute, Satan. My payment not only covers their bill for eternity; it also covers daily sins. Yes they disobeyed, but they have asked My forgiveness and so their sin is forgiven. Every day Jesus acts as our advocate - our defense lawyer. Because He is the Lamb of God, He continues to take away our sin. Does that mean we can go out and live like the devil because our sin can be forgiven? No. First of all, when we understand what it cost Jesus to forgive our sin, we do not want to live like the devil. Secondly, there is a difference between forgiveness and consequences. When we sin, and then ask forgiveness, our sin is forgiven, we are always in His family; our eternity bill is paid. But for every wrong choice we make there are always consequences. God does not remove them because they are the tools to teach and discipline us. After going thru a few consequences, we are more careful with our choices. 2. He continually prays for us He is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. - Romans 8:34 We value the prayers of our friends and church community. We feel support when we know they are praying for us. But they do not know all that is inside of us - our weakness and inabilities, so their prayers are limited. Jesus knows everything about us, so when He prays for us, His prayers are tailored-made - they will be exactly what we need for each situation. He will never forget to pray and He is praying for us continually. I suggest He prays for us as He prayed for Peter - that our faith does not fail. This does not mean we could lose our place as members of His family. It means we could lose our enjoyment of that relationship and lose the opportunities He wants to bring into our life. Jesus prays that when we face heartache or when we fail, we do not turn from God, but to God. He prays for our spiritual maturity, our discernment, unity with other believers, our response to the Holy Spirit and His direction. 3. He provides the Holy Spirit to permanently live in each member of His family. Jesus told the apostles, Unless I go away, the Counselor - the Holy Spirit will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. Jn. 16:7 7 The Holy Spirit is the One who teaches us, gives us direction, draws us to Jesus, gives us the desire to obey, corrects us and reminds us when we have disobeyed. He gives us comfort in our time of fear and grief. He gives us confidence that we are members of God’s family and makes the presence of Jesus real in our lives. 4. He gives us spiritual gifts and abilities so we have a ministry and can share in His work. Paul tells us in Eph. 4, But to each one of us grace has been given us as Christ apportioned it. This is why it says, when He ascended on high, …He gave spiritual gifts to His people. Eph. 4:7-8 As we go thru life, our ministry will often change. Jesus will never lead us into another ministry without giving us the spiritual gifts and abilities that we will need. 5. He provides gifted people to teach, train, and lead us, Paul continues in Eph. 4… It was He - Jesus - who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service so that the Body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature… 4:11-13. 6. He answers our prayers and supports us in time of need or weakness - as individuals or as a group. Sometimes He answers even before we ask or before we know what to ask. The writer to the Hebrews says, For we do not have a high priest (Jesus) who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have One who has been tempted in every way, just as we are - yet without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so we may receive mercy and find grace to help in our time of need. Heb. 4:15-16; 1 Jn. 5:14-15 7. He prepares a home for us so we can spend all eternity living in His presence. Jn. 14:1-3 Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in Me. In My Father’s house are many places to live. If it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with Me, that you also may be where I am. Jesus’ ministry did not end when He went back to heaven - it expanded. He is actively involved in each of our lives to meet our needs, even when we are not aware of Him. THE MINISTRY OF JESUS IN HEAVEN FOR BELIEVERS He is our defense lawyer to forgive our sins He prays for us He provides the Holy Spirit to live inside of us permanently He provides us with spiritual gifts and abilities He provides gifted people to teach, train, and lead His body He answers our prayers He is preparing an eternal home for us Each of us, as believers in Jesus, can say, Today, Jesus is doing this for me. In these lessons, we have learned about Jewish life and background - Jewish thinking. But most of all, because of what we have learned, I trust Jesus has become more alive and real for you. A person you want to spend time with and get to know even more. A person you love, worship and honor because of who He is, what He has done, and what He is doing even now. 8 ENDNOTE Verses in the Gospels that teach the Deity of Jesus Matt. 1:23 The virgin…will give birth to a son and they will call Him Immanuel which means God with us. Matt. 2:11 Referring to the Magi) When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshipped him. Only deity can be worshipped. John 1:1-3 In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were made by Him. Compare with Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and earth. Luke 5:20 When Jesus saw their faith, He said, Friend, your sins have been forgiven you. The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, …Who can forgive sins but God alone? Up to this point, the only way Jewish people could have their sin forgiven was thru animal sacrifices. After the sacrifice, the priest would use the Hebrew phrase from Leviticus 4-6, your sins are forgiven. The religious leaders knew if God made the original rules about forgiveness, then only deity had the right to change the rules and declare a person forgiven without an animal sacrifice. Jesus was making a claim of deity to the Jewish religious leaders. John 5:17-18 My Father is always at His work…and I too am working. In Middle east thinking, the character of the Father is the character of the first born son. Jews referred to God as “our Father,” but to call God “my Father” was claiming the position of 1 st born son. By saying “My Father,” Jesus is saying He is equal with the Father; He is deity. So in vs. 18 John says, For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill Him; …He was even calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God. Matt. 17:2 There He (Jesus) was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. This is a description of deity. John 8:24-58 … if you do not believe that I am, you will indeed die in your sins. vs. 58 I tell you the truth, Jesus answered, before Abraham was born, I am! At this, they picked up stones to stone Him. Jesus used the name for deity from the Old Testament - the name “I AM” or Yahweh. Once again the Jews were ready to stone Him because He was claiming to be deity. John 10:29 I give them eternal life and they will never perish. No one can take them out of My hand. In order for Jesus to give eternal life, He has to have it as part of His character or being. He can give eternal life because He is eternal - He is deity. John 10:30 I and My Father are One. By claiming God as His Father, He is claiming to have the same characteristics or qualities and the same amount of each. In this case, He and His Father have the same amount of power. In these statements, Jesus has made Himself equal with the Father. The Jews understand this claim and pick up stones. When He asks them why they want to kill Him, they admit, It is not for your miracles, but for your blasphemy. You, as a mere man, are claiming to be God - deity. Mark 11:17 My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations, but you have made it a den of robbers. The Jews called the Temple “God’s House.” When Jesus calls it “My House”, He is claiming Deity. He has a right to say how it should be used. Mark 12:36 (a quotation of David from the Psalms) The Lord (God the Father) said to my Lord (the Messiah) Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet. 9 The Messiah, Jesus is David’s son (descendant). Why would David call his son Lord? That would mean his son was greater. How could a descendant be greater than the great King David? The answer is that David, thru the Holy Spirit, knew this descendant would be deity. Jesus, in His humanity, was David’s son. In His deity, He was David’s Lord. John 16:28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father. John 17:5 Jesus prays, And now, Father, glorify Me in Your presence with the glory I had with You before the world began. Only deity could make these claims. John 18:4-5 Jesus…went out and asked them, Who is it you want? Jesus of Nazareth, they replied. I am, Jesus said. Again Jesus uses the I AM name, the name of deity. John 20:28 After the resurrection Jeus told Thomas to touch His side so he could believe. Thomas said to Him, My Lord and My God. Jesus accepts his worship and the title of deity because He is deity.
