Blessed Assurance: Our Victory In Jesus
1 John 5:1–13 NLT
1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has become a child of God. And everyone who loves the Father loves his children, too. 2 We know we love God’s children if we love God and obey his commandments. 3 Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome. 4 For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith. 5 And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God. 6 And Jesus Christ was revealed as God’s Son by his baptism in water and by shedding his blood on the cross—not by water only, but by water and blood. And the Spirit, who is truth, confirms it with his testimony. 7 So we have these three witnesses— 8 the Spirit, the water, and the blood—and all three agree. 9 Since we believe human testimony, surely we can believe the greater testimony that comes from God. And God has testified about his Son. 10 All who believe in the Son of God know in their hearts that this testimony is true. Those who don’t believe this are actually calling God a liar because they don’t believe what God has testified about his Son. 11 And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life. 13 I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life.

INTRODUCTION:

I- OUR VICTORY IN JESUS IS GROUNDED IN AN UNALTERABLE RELATIONSHIP . ().

A- Believers are children of God. ()

1 John 5:1 NLT
1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has become a child of God. And everyone who loves the Father loves his children, too.
1- All who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ and His finished work has become a child of God.
2- The guarantee of our eternal life comes from the fact that we are children of God.
Not from our accomplishments.
Isaiah 64:6 NLT
6 We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall, and our sins sweep us away like the wind.
Not from our pedigree
Note:
Philippians 3:3–9 NLT
3 For we who worship by the Spirit of God are the ones who are truly circumcised. We rely on what Christ Jesus has done for us. We put no confidence in human effort, 4 though I could have confidence in my own effort if anyone could. Indeed, if others have reason for confidence in their own efforts, I have even more! 5 I was circumcised when I was eight days old. I am a pure-blooded citizen of Israel and a member of the tribe of Benjamin—a real Hebrew if there ever was one! I was a member of the Pharisees, who demand the strictest obedience to the Jewish law. 6 I was so zealous that I harshly persecuted the church. And as for righteousness, I obeyed the law without fault. 7 I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. 8 Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ 9 and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith.

B- Believers provide evidence of their assurance through a bi-directional relational lifestyle. ()

1 John 5:2–3 NLT
2 We know we love God’s children if we love God and obey his commandments. 3 Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome.
1- Loving siblings ()
1 John 5:1b NLT
1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has become a child of God. And everyone who loves the Father loves his children, too.
2- Loving the Father ()
1 John 5:3 NLT
3 Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome.
3- Obedience to the father is one way to prove we love each other. ()
1 John 5:2 NLT
2 We know we love God’s children if we love God and obey his commandments.

C- Believers alone are assured of ultimate victory over this evil world. ()

1- Victory over the world come through faith. ()
1 John 5:4 NLT
4 For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith.
2- Only those who are saved can have victory over the world. ()
1 John 5:5 NLT
5 And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God.

II- OUR VICTORY IN JESUS IS GUARANTEED BY UNALTERABLE TRUTH. ()

A- The indisputable character of the witnesses to the nature and mission of Christ guarantee the truth of the gospel. ()

1 John 5:6–9 NLT
6 And Jesus Christ was revealed as God’s Son by his baptism in water and by shedding his blood on the cross—not by water only, but by water and blood. And the Spirit, who is truth, confirms it with his testimony. 7 So we have these three witnesses— 8 the Spirit, the water, and the blood—and all three agree. 9 Since we believe human testimony, surely we can believe the greater testimony that comes from God. And God has testified about his Son.
1- Jesus was revealed through his baptism and his death. ()
1 John 5:6 NLT
6 And Jesus Christ was revealed as God’s Son by his baptism in water and by shedding his blood on the cross—not by water only, but by water and blood. And the Spirit, who is truth, confirms it with his testimony.
a- God the Father testified of Jesus’ deity at his baptism. ()
Matthew 3:13–17 NLT
13 Then Jesus went from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to talk him out of it. “I am the one who needs to be baptized by you,” he said, “so why are you coming to me?” 15 But Jesus said, “It should be done, for we must carry out all that God requires.” So John agreed to baptize him. 16 After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.”
b- Jesus fulfilled his role as the “Lamb of God” as he shed his blood on the cross. ()
John 1:29 NLT
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
()
John 3:16 NLT
16 “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
c- Jesus also demonstrated his humanity in both events.
He could not have been baptized nor experienced death if he were not a flesh and blood human, but only spirit as the Gnostics said.
2- The Holy Spirit bears testimony of the person and work of Jesus. ()
1 John 5:6–8 NLT
6 And Jesus Christ was revealed as God’s Son by his baptism in water and by shedding his blood on the cross—not by water only, but by water and blood. And the Spirit, who is truth, confirms it with his testimony. 7 So we have these three witnesses— 8 the Spirit, the water, and the blood—and all three agree.
This completes the threefold witness demanded by OT law.
3- The testimony of God (as sen in the father’s testimony at the baptism and the Spirit’s testimony) is definitely one that should be trusted. ()
1 John 5:9 NLT
9 Since we believe human testimony, surely we can believe the greater testimony that comes from God. And God has testified about his Son.

B- The indefensible position of people who reject the truth of the gospel. ()

1- God has testified about his gift of eternal life. ()
1 John 5:11 NLT
11 And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
(1 John
()
1 John 5:12 NLT
12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life.
2- God testifies of the exclusive nature of His gift. ()
1 John 5:12 NLT
12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life.
()
John 14:6 NLT
6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.
3- Refusal to believe in Jesus means one refuses to believe God. ()
1 John 5:10 NLT
10 All who believe in the Son of God know in their hearts that this testimony is true. Those who don’t believe this are actually calling God a liar because they don’t believe what God has testified about his Son.
