I have left out the possibility that some un-self-regulating organisms can only thrive by being negative to their surroundings.  I once asked an attorney who represented “white collar” criminals why these individuals, who often developed brilliant schemes, didn’t just go straight, given the likelihood that their ingenuity would profit them in that direction also.  And he replied, “they just don’t seem to be able to get energized unless they are bypassing the law.”
