Dominant Thought: Worship propels us into greater obedience! Worship is the one
Scripture: ;
thing that God desires that only you can give!
Introduction:
Scripture: ;
One of the things I want for each one of us is for us to become worshippers of God. I read in scripture how God calls us to praise him, I read how the early church experienced the move of the Holy Spirit as they gathered for worship. I want that for you… for me… for us.
IF there was one thing I
But what is worship?

What is worship?

What is worship?
Creative Element: Worship Testimony Video
Is it singing songs? Is it coming to church? What exactly is worship?
Worship is not an aspect of our being but the essence of our being as God’s image bearers. As a result, all of life is ceaseless worship. Practically, this means that while worship does include corporate church meetings, singing songs, and liturgical forms, it is not limited by these things, defined solely as these things, or expressed only in these things, because worship never stops. Rather, we are continually giving ourselves away or pouring ourselves out for a person, cause, experience, achievement, or status. Sadly, as the doctrine of the fall reveals, much of how we pour ourselves out and what we pour ourselves into in worship is someone or something other than the Creator God.
So it doesn’t matter what you believe, who you believe in, whether or not you believe at all, we all worship… constantly. We are all worshippers all the time.
But we don’t all worship the same, so is all worship the same? No
What makes our worship Christian? is it the songs we sing? the way we sing them? The instruments we play? organ or guitar -
Grew up in church with no music… My wife has come to Christ through contemporary music… I have family who go to churches where people dance in the isles, jump over pews, had ribbons and banners tamporines
Which one was the right way? Neither.... both...
Neither.... both...
Because worship is a matter of the heart.
You remember the conversation Jesus had with the Samaritan woman in .
John 4:23–24 NLT
23 But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. 24 For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”
1. Not the qualities of the world…not slickest… not smoke machines… not best looking… well spoken… What God is looking for is authentic, genuine, real, TRUE worshippers. And itʼs the one thing that God needs that only you can give! ---
True worship is what God is looking for
2. Present tense…not past tense… “God is looking” so we must worship.... not on Sunday mornings… or on our emmaus weekends. Remember we are worshippers, so God is looking for us to be in worship all the time; at work, at home; in the car
So True worship the sort of worship God is looking for is unique.
What is true worship?
I want to share some characteristics from scripture that can guide us to be true worshippers… we are going to worship, let’s make sure God finds it pleasing.
The first thing about true worship is that....

True worship requires right position: Intimacy

The things we are or want to be close to
It’s always been this way.

People are worshippers… it’s who we are, and we tend to fall into the trap of worshipping the things we know a lot about. Or maybe it’s that we know a lot about the things we worship.... Either way, we are either going to worship and that worship is going to be true or false
We tend to know a lot about what we worship
Here’s the difference between our worldly worship and the worship we should be offering God.

True worship comes out of truly KNOWING God... not just knowing ABOUT God!

One of my greatest fears is that there are many of you who know about God... and you consistently find yourself here in church... yeah, you sing the songs... but it’s more out of obligation that out of desire... because you do not truly KNOW God! When you truly know Him... you won’t be able to help but worship Him!
Here’s the test…God giving you anything you asked for…What would you ask for? Do you know what King David, the one in the bible who is described as having a heart afrter GOd, you know what he asked for?
In … he said there is only one thing I would ask for...
if God showed up right now and told you that you could wish for one thing... it could be anything whatsoever... one wish... what would you wish for? And no wishing for more wishes, right. What would you wish for? Do you know what David wished for?
He says in that if there were only one thing that he could ask of the Lord... this is what he would seek. Look at this...
Psalm 27:4 NIV
4 One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.
That’s intimacy...True worshippers worship out of their intimacy with God.
4 One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.
True worshippers worship with intimacy.

True worship requires the right posture: Awe

False worshippers idolize created things
But ya know, we all have had people in our lives that have had that kind of impact... whether it’s a athlete... an artist... a famous person of some sort. And we are in awe of him or her. If we were to meet the person we would go out of our way to make the person comfortable and give him every little thing he needs.
However, when we talk about God... you hear Him being referred to as “The Big Guy.” “The Dude Upstairs.” We use such casual terms that I’m afraid most of us have maybe forgotten who He really is.
True worshippers worship Him with awe! John writes...
Revelation 1:16–17 NIV
16 In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance. 17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last.
Hebrews 12:28–29 NIV
28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, 29 for our “God is a consuming fire.”
In his right hand he held seven stars…His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance. When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead…
How many of us would say that if we looked back at our worship this AM we would say that as we sang, we were in awe that the God of Creation was present in our worship?
Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.

True worshippers worship God with Awe

Why? Because they are consumed with God. And when you are consumed with God then you will give to God the one thing that He needs and only you can provide.
We use that word for all sorts of things… this was awesome, that was awesome; but the only thing that should truly produce awe is God.
Last night we had staffers from Camp Fairlee over to the house and they cooked us a meal of Arroz con pollo black beans, and tortillas… one of my favorite meals that is pretty traditional in Central America. I try to cook it, but it’s never quite right. Well they came over and two of the staffers said we are going to cook it traditional style! and they did.... and it was awesome… or was it just really really good?
God is awesome, he made the chicken, the rice, the black beans and the garlic. He made these young people who we got to meet and spend time with. He gave them a heart for special needs kids so that they would leave home to come to Fairlee to serve. He did all this and I got to experience it all coming together just right! That’s awesome
But ever more is the fact that while I was a sinner Jesus died for me. That’s the most awesome thing I have ever experienced.
So what’s the right posture for someone in awe? Hands raised? Knees? Face? Standing tall? Seated?
Awe is an attitude of the heart.

True worship requires the right perspective: Abandonment

Abandonment
Meeting famous people we will do some crazy things. Football is back in and I was watching something this week where a bunch of kids and parents were meeting a famous football player and they were taking off their shoes for him to sign. Their shoes. It’s not like they were his shoes. No they were taking off their old stepped in dog poo shoes and handing them over to him for his autograph…crazy.
But that’s how many of us act when we see a famous person, we don’t care what other people think. We are going to get the picture with them. It doesn’t matter who makes fun of you, how silly you may seem, you don’t care who’s watching; it doesn’t bother you at all! Totally abandoned.
False worship abandons things for a selfish priority; but true worship abandons things for God.
False worship abandons other things for a selfish priority
False worship abandons things for a selfish priority; but true worship abandons things for God.
My wife takes off her shoes. I on the other hand am uncomfortable raising my hands above my shoulder… I”ll tell you when I do, there is almost always a voice in my head… you shouldn't do that, that’s unnecessary. But that should be the point, it is unnecessary and that’s why I do it because I love Jesus.
Story in OT when the Ark of the covenant was returned to Jerusalem; King David lost his mind in worship. In 2 Samuel we find him getting critized for his un kingly behavior, but here’s his response.
2 Samuel 6:21–22 NIV
21 David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the Lord’s people Israel—I will celebrate before the Lord. 22 I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor.”
Have you ever been to that point in life... where you find yourself in the presence of the Lord... and you let all pour out... you don’t care about who’s watching and how crazy they might think that you are... because, you know what, it doesn’t matter because I am in the presence of the Almighty God. The Bible says that David DANCED with all of his might.
David said to Michal…ʼI will celebrate before the LORD. I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes…ʼ
If I danced, you would laugh… go ahead someone give me an amen.... But David didn’t care, WHY? Because he was dancing for God.
Let me tell you something... If I stood up here and danced with just some of my might... with just a little of my might... okay, if I danced at all... you all would laugh! I’m sure you wouldn’t hold back. David didn’t care... because he was in the presence of the Lord.
He wasn’t just some guy, he was the King. People looked to him, people respected him, people followed him. He set the tone for the nation.
My experience in worship at RFCoC
Ya know what, this wasn’t just some ordinary man... this was a king... this was King David. People looked up to King David... people respected King David... people looked to King David for direction. I wonder who’s watching you... and because you DO NOT worship all out... the pedal to the floor... totally abandoned... that person will won’t either. This is an aspect we often overlook... because we get so internally focused... worship is all about me... and what I get... and whether I like the songs or not... and whether the drums were too loud today or not. Worship is about me and the emotional high that I get. And we forget that people are watching us... people are learning from us how to worship. And I wonder when a first-time guest experiences worship with us if they will find a group of reserved people... concerned about who’s behind them watching their every move... or, will they find uninhibited worship... will they find a group of people who holds nothing back? Who offer all they have in worship of their God?Will they find a group of people who lays it all down at the foot of the cross... who abandons everything about themselves so that God can receive the one thing that only you and I can give to Him.
How many people are watching you learning to worship because of you and because you don’t worship all out…pedal to the floor… totally abandoned… that person never will either. We don’t think about this because we get so focused internally; thinking worship is about me, what I get, what I like, whether I know the songs, whether they use an organ or a guitar, drums? Making worship about me and the emotional high I get, we become bound to the expectations of others… the people watching us or the people who taught us how to worship “the right way”.
I wonder about if first time worshippers who visit us will see a group of bound worshippers or a group of people who are free to express their love and admiration for God. Who offer all they have in worship of their God?Will they find a group of people who lays it all down at the foot of the cross... who abandons everything about themselves so that God can receive the one thing that only you and I can give to Him.

There is one thing in this universe that God created that God Himself does not have the power to obtain. God, the Creator of every star... of every planet... of every tree... every blade of grass... every animal... every man and woman. When God created you and me He decided to create us with free choice... meaning that you are not just a puppet on a string... or a person on a leash... but that you have the freedom to choose God or leave Him behind. You have the choice to follow Him... or to follow the world. And so, because of God’s decision to give us that freedom there is one thing in this universe of which He does not have the power to obtain... and that is your worship.

In John chapter 4 we find a story about Jesus... and he is traveling and he comes in contact with a woman. Now, in this time for a man to speak to a woman who is a stranger was way out of the box, okay... Not only that but Jesus was a Jewish male speaking to a Samaritan woman. That is WAY outside of the box. The Jews despised the Samaritans and the Samaritans despised the Jews. And so, Jesus crosses the line and begins to speak with this woman. Without knowing this woman Jesus begins to speak about her... and she is in awe of this guy... ya know, how does he know all of this stuff about me!? She realizes that this must be a really holy man and so she wants to ask him question. You see, there was this constant debate between the Samaritans and the Jews about where to worship. The Samaritans said that you have to go up to the top of this mountain over here to worship. The Jews said, NO, you are supposed to worship in the temple. And so, here’s this lady and she wants to ask this obviously holy guy where is the right place to worship. And this is how Jesus responds.

And then Jesus goes on to say that these “TRUE” worshippers are the kind of people that God SEEKS. That blows my mind, let me tell you. Because our world seeks the most talented, right!? 3. Worship with INTIMACY

We tend to know a lot about what we worship
know that he’s not really a vampire in real life. You may know his favorite food. You may know what kind of car he drives. You may know all kinds of things about him... but do you truly know him? NO! Right!? Not a single one of you truly know him. ---
Here’s the difference between our worldly worship and the worship we should be offering God.

True worshippers worship with intimacy.

Intimacy, Awe, Unhindered

The book of Psalms gives us some incredible images of worship. Not all, but much of the book was written by David. It says to...
Shout to God
Dance before Him
Bow down
Tell of His might
Meditate on His truth
Still your heart
Run to Him
Lift your hands
Clash the cymbals
Sing a new song
Clap your hands
Lift up your heads
Stand in awe
Make a loud noise
Seek His face
We need to value uninhibited worship... here you have the freedom to express and offer your worship to God they way you wish. We want you to feel free to clap your hands... raise your hands... bow on your knees... sit in silence. I give you permission right now to worship him how you feel led... and no one will judge you... look down up you... make fun of you. This time of worship is not about them... it’s about giving to God the one thing he needs that only you can give him.

By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection you gave birth to your Church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit. When the Lord Jesus ascended, he promised to be with us always, in the power of your Word and Holy Spirit.
The pastor may hold hands, palms down, over the bread, or touch the bread, or lift the bread.
On the night in which he gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said:"Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me."
The pastor may hold hands, palms down, over the cup, or touch the cup, or lift the cup.
When the supper was over, he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said:"Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me."
The pastor may raise hands.
And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ's offering for us, we proclaim the mystery of faith.
Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.
The pastor may hold hands, palms down, over the bread and cup.
Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and wine.
Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood.
The pastor may raise hands.
By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory and we feast at his heavenly banquet.
Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church, all honor and glory is yours, almighty Father, now and forever. Amen.

THE LORD'S PRAYER

The pastor's hands may be extended in open invitation. And now, with the confidence of children of God, let us pray:The pastor may raise hands. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

BREAKING THE BREAD

The pastor, still standing behind the Lord's table facing the people, breaks the bread in silence, or while saying:
Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf. The bread which we break is a sharing in the body of Christ.
The pastor lifts the cup in silence, or while saying:
The cup over which we give thanks is a sharing in the blood of Christ.
