I. The Lord’s Supper is a reminder of who God is.

The Lord’s Supper is a celebration of the way God has worked from the beginning of time.

Illus: The bible is not a collection of stories nor a collection of quotable verses.

The Bible is one story of God’s work in sacrificing Himself for every person.

The Lord’s supper cannot be understood by itself. It is not a new ceremony or symbol enacted by the church.

To understand the Lord’s Supper you must understand the passover feast, and to understand the passover, you must understand God’s intent and work from all the way back in eden.

In eden we are presented with the grave problem that we men rebelled against God, and that the good God intended was lost in one bite.

That said, God did not abandon us men in eden, but painted a picture through sacrifice of how he would save men.

B. The Lord’s Supper symbolizes the fulfillment of the tabernacle and temple.

5 Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there to worship; then we’ll come back to you.” 6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and laid it on his son Isaac. In his hand he took the fire and the knife, and the two of them walked on together.

Isaac said, “The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”

The Lord’s Supper reminds us of who Jesus is.

Illus: In america we have many many holidays to remind us of the sacrifice necessary to keep freedom. We celebrate memorial day to remind us of the lives given in sacrifice of our liberty. We celebrate veterans day to honor the men and women who serve our country. We celebrate July 4th to help us remember our independence.

As Christians there is no symbol, holiday more important that the Lord’s Supper. I love Christmas and Easter, BUT scripture teaches that the true way to remember the universe altering work of God is through the Lord’s Supper.

When we celebrate the Lord’s Supper we feel the gravity of the sacrifice which echoed in the garden of eden, in place of Isaac, in the tabernacle, temple, and in fullness on the cross. All of the Old Testament and New Testament focus on the single moment of Jesus’ death burial and resurrection.

We should look at ourselves and say, I am Adam, if not for the sacrifice. I am Isaac if not for the sacrifice. It am dead, if not for the sacrifice.

II. The Lord’s Supper is a reminder of who we are.

The Lord’s Supper is a constant reminder that we need a substitute.

Illus: There is a foolishness we allow both in our lives and in the church.

This foolishness is playing the pretend game.

We pretend that we have our lives together.

We pretend that we do not struggle in sin.

We pretend live everything in hunkey dorey.

When it’s not.

THe Lord’s Supper forces us to the feet of the cross to deal with our sin. It reminds us of who we are, and what God did.

It is a bloody and real reminder that every lie, every thought, every gossip, every bit of wickedness in us was costly and paid for by the suffering of our God.

The Lord’s Supper is a church wide act of unity.

Illus: I read a turn of the phrase a few weeks back about the two symbols we embrace as believers of Christ: “Baptism unites one to the many, and the Lord’s Supper unites the many into one.”

It is the statement that we all humbly bow at the foot of the cross unworthy. As we take the bread and wine we say, it is not my goodness or righteousness, but all are found in the perfect work of Christ.

The Lord’s Supper is a grand statement of unity where we set aside the foolishness of our differences, willing own up to our sin, and then come as a body to affirm that Jesus saves.

Let me speak plainly for a moment. I believe God gave the church baptism and the Lord’s supper. Are there exceptions. yes, 2. Where there is no church, or where the person is unable to gather with the church.

But Baptism is the public profession of faith and joining to an individual body of Christ, a church. The Lord’s Supper is an act of unity and humility where the church gathers to remember the immense sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

Neither the Lord’s supper or baptism should be practiced apart from the local body of believers unless there are extreme circumstances.

III. The Lord’s Supper keeps our focus on Jesus.

The Lord’s Supper helps us keep the main thing, the main thing.

Illus: The Lord’s supper is the plumb line of the church. THere are many things which seek to pull the church in any number of directions, but the Lord’s Supper is the constant reminder of what we are all about.

It places the body and blood of Jesus in front of our faces every time we take it.

It is the vivid reminder of our brokeness, sinfulness and unworthiness in the body of Christ.

It is the vivid reminder of the fact that our unity is found in the sacrificed body of our God.

It keeps the main thing the main thing.
