God is Good
God is Good
For the Lord God is a sun and shield;
the Lord bestows favor and honor.
No good thing does he withhold
from those who walk uprightly.
The goodness of God is that which disposes Him to be kind, cordial, benevolent, and full of good will toward men. He is tenderhearted and of quick sympathy, and His unfailing attitude toward all moral beings is open, frank, and friendly. By His nature He is inclined to bestow blessedness and He takes total pleasure and happiness of His people
A.W. Tozer
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!
Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
The Lord is good to all,
and his mercy is over all that he has made.
And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments.”
God’s Goodness is seen in Natural Blessings
They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness
and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.
The Lord is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
The Lord is good to all,
and his mercy is over all that he has made.
The eyes of all look to you,
and you give them their food in due season.
You open your hand;
you satisfy the desire of every living thing.
The Lord is righteous in all his ways
and kind in all his works.
The Lord is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth.
He fulfills the desire of those who fear him;
he also hears their cry and saves them.
The Lord preserves all who love him,
but all the wicked he will destroy.
My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord,
and let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever.
God is good to all which we can call common grace!
God’s goodness is seen in Creation
And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
How have you experienced God’s goodness in creation?
God’s Goodness is seen in His love and generosity towards His people
Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions;
according to your steadfast love remember me,
for the sake of your goodness, O Lord!
And they captured fortified cities and a rich land, and took possession of houses full of all good things, cisterns already hewn, vineyards, olive orchards and fruit trees in abundance. So they ate and were filled and became fat and delighted themselves in your great goodness.
If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.”
With in the cluster fo God’s moral perfection there is one particular to which the term goodness points—the quality in which God especially singled out from the whole when, proclaiming ‘all goodness’ to Moses, he spoke of himself as ‘abundant in goodness and truth’…This is the quality of generosity’
Generosity expresses the simple wish that others should have what they need to make them Happy”
Generosity means a disposition to give to others in a way which mercenary motive and is not limited by what the recipient deserves but constantly goes beyond it.
J.I. Packer
so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
Do you think God’s goodness is determined by your goodness?
How have you experienced God’s goodness personally? Share a testimony
We see God’s Goodness in specific deliverances
How do you see God’s deliverance in Psalms 107
God redeems the helpless from their enemies because He is good
God rescues us from the shadow of death because He is good
God heals us from our diseases because he is good
God protects from the storms that threaten to sink our lives because he is good
These represent times throughout history when God delivers his people but God’s plan doesn’t always work the way want it to work but always try to focus on God’s Goodness
We see God’s Goodness in Jesus
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?
