Speaking in Tongues
I find it interesting that we are talking about speaking in tongues and receiving the Holy Spirit.
When finding out about new Christians Paul typically asks three question, which I believe are the three beginning stages of Christianity.
Did they receive Jesus
Did they get baptized
Did they receive the Holy Spirit
Each one of these steps have distinct reasons and although are together they, like God are also separate.
We talked about this last week at the baptismal so we aren’t going to spend a huge amount of time on them.
The main recap we need is that you do not have to be baptized to be saved.
We see this when Jesus was dying on the cross.
A thief asked for forgiveness.
Jesus said this very day you will be with me in paradise.
The thief wasn’t taken down, baptized and filled with Holy Spirit and then put back up to die.
Many good Christians I know do steps one and two and never receive the Power of the Holy Spirit.
So to begin lets turn out bibles to
Out of this whole thing I want to start on the best part.
V13
I find this interesting for 2 reasons
People will mock you
Anytime you do something for Christ people will mock you.
They will!
Jesus promises this
You know you aren’t standing out when people aren’t mocking you.
any time you try to leave the crowd the crowd will always try to put you down to pull you back.
But on the other hand you have those who were
Perplexed (), Amazing () and there we those who marveled ().
Being different, being Godly will put you in the spot light.
It will cause you pain, but it will also cause others to come to the understanding of Christ.
Right now, Thank God I believe it’s just a season, but my life is full of constant attacks.
However, I have also seen the victories.
Satan will often use the mockers to distract you from those who are amazed.
So lets discuss speaking in tongues.
There are three types of speaking in tongues.
Personal edification- This is often the first experience of those who receive the Holy Spirit.
It’s the Spirit of God inside of us Talking to God.
He utters secrets we do not know.
2. Speaking in Tongues with Translation- This is when someone stands to speak in tongues and then someone else tells those in the known language what God is saying.
God uses this time to gain attention.
to create listening ears and open hearts.
3.
In known language unknown to the speaker.
This is what happened on the day of Pentecost.
All three are still active and alive today.
Some are used more than others, but all three are still used.
Warren Weirsbe states that Pentecost was the reversal of the tower of Babel
Due to sin people were confused and seperated.
Due to Jesus’ death on the cross people were brought together and enlightened each hearing in their own language the Glory of God.
One of the First things I noticed in this scripture is
Satan has far to long used the Spirit to divide the church, but the main function of the Holy spirit is to draw unbelievers unity himself so that they can hear the word of God.
The day of Pentecost wouldn’t have been so powerful if that power stayed in the upper room.
Instead it drew in those who didn’t even know to seek.
Is your relationship with God drawing people, or repelling them?
God came to draw close to his people.
that’s his ultimate desire.
It was why human kind was created and it’s why he sent his Son.
The Spirit must be sought
In the Greek to “be filled” isn’t a one time event.
Paul used a present tense verb which means a constant need for filling.
Dwight L. Moody was asked why he always seek to be filled with the Holy Spirit and his response was astounding and deep.
He said
Because I leak
The Apostles didn’t stumble into the presence of the Spirit.
They were in the upper room seeking.
I have heard people leave church stating that the Holy Spirit wasn’t moving that morning.
I have heard people in the same morning state: the Holy Spirit was powerfully falling.
The only difference between the two is that one was seeking and making themselves aware the other was just waiting.
We must being willing and open to what the Spirit wants to do.
We must be praying and abiding in what God has.
We must be continually repenting.
A clean vessel cannot live in mud.
Which is why the Spirit of God cannot live in the unsaved.
True repentance is key to a powerful meeting with God.
I believe this has biblical ground, because it wasn’t until the death of Jesus that the Spirit abided in people.
Before this in the OT the Spirit would temporarily rest on people.
Open the alters for those to Seek.
