In the church we often say things; we use certain expressions, but do we really understand what they mean? We kind of guess by the context in which the word or phrase is used, but do we really know what it’s referring to? This morning I’m going to talk about one of those phrases— latter rain.
The title of today’s message is “The Latter Rain is Coming: Stay in the Rain”
In the Bible, especially the Old Testament, there were certain things that happened and when those things did or did not happen it represented the favor or the displeasure of God with Israel, His chosen people. The latter rain is one of those things they used to determine how God was feeling about them.
15 And I will send grass in thy fields for thy cattle, that thou mayest eat and be full.

Latter rain was the annual spring rainfall in Palestine, which came from late March to early April, it came after the citrus harvest and before the wheat and barley harvests. The spring rains normally ended the rainy season until the start of the fall, or early, rains in October.

These rains came to bring the crop to maturity, to finish it up. Sometimes we need something to polish us up. After we did our wellness presentation Friday night, our mentor and coach did what we called in the military a hot wash, some may know it as an after action report, some may know it as a critique; by whatever name you know it, it was a list of areas for improvement. It was notes so that each time we do it, the presentation gets better and better. It was latter rain to mature us in this area of our lives.
Too often in the church when we’re told something we don’t like, something that’s meant to help us grow, something that’s meant to help us get to the next level, we get offended and leave, in search of greener pastures. But can I tell you something? Those pastures are only greener because they got some rain—stay in the rain.

How can you expect to grow
Too often in the church when we’re told something we don’t like, something that’s meant to help us grow, something that’s meant to help us get to the next level, we get offended and leave, in search of greener pastures. But can I tell you something? Those pastures are only greener because they got some rain—stay in the rain.
How can you expect to grow…
if you never get any water
• If you never get any water
if you never get correction
if you’re never told what you can do better
• If you never get correction
if you’re never told about a better way
• If you never hear about doctrine
• If you never get reproof
if you never experience the latter rain
Stay in the rain.
• If you never receive instruction in righteousness
The growth process is not always comfortable, it’s not always easy. The summer my baby boy was going into his freshman year of high school his feet grew three shoe sizes and I don’t know how many inches taller he got, but he complained about his knees and legs hurting really bad and on top of that he was running cross country. So I took him to the doctor who gave us this long technical explanation of what was going on and the blank look on my face clearly said I have no idea of what you just said. So he broke it down with, he’s having growing pains, which I immediately understood. His bones were growing so fast his joints and ligaments couldn’t keep up and were being stretched—and it hurt. But now my baby boy is a strapping 6’1’, 200 something pound young man and doing great. But to get there he had to go through some growing pains, the doctor said, keep running, just ice your knees down when you finish and it will make you feel better.
• If you’re never told what you can do better
• If you’re never told about a better way
Spiritually, there are things God is going to give you that will stretch you beyond what you think is your limit, it’s going to be unfamiliar to you, but God knows what you can do, because he put it in you to do. How many know that God has put every gift in you he intended you to have? You just need some rain to activate and mature that gift.
• If you never experience the latter rain
Saints,
Stay in the rain.
you gotta get wet if you’re ever going to grow

you gotta get uncomfortable if you’re ever going to be who God created you to be
Spiritually, there are things God is going to give you that will stretch you beyond what you think is your limit, it’s going to be unfamiliar to you, it’s going to be uncomfortable for you, but God knows what you can do, because he put it in you to do. you gotta take the constructive criticism
you gotta take the no
Saints,
• you gotta get wet if you’re ever going to grow
you gotta take the not right now
• you gotta get uncomfortable if you’re ever going to be who God created you to be
you gotta stand in the rain
the former rain that starts the process of growth
and the latter rain that brings you into maturity
and when you’re fully developed
• you gotta take the constructive criticism
and when the yes comes…
• you gotta take the no
• you gotta take the not right now
you’ll have grown into a place where you can do what it is God gave you to do with ease, with Holy Ghost boldness, with power and confidence. All because you stayed in the rain. Say, “self, stay in the rain”.
For a plant to grow, it starts as a seed and that seed must die to become what it was meant to be. That seed is placed in the ground, it dies and the outer layer sheds away, then what’s inside pushes it’s way through the dirt, the rain helps to soften the soil. Anyone ever seen dirt that hasn’t had rain in a long time? It’s hard and difficult to dig through it, but what happens when you add some water, what happens when the rain comes? Now it turns to mud and it makes a mess, it sticks to your shows when you walk through it, if you do it barefoot it gets between your toes, but for that plant trying to get through that dirt; the rain is making it’s journey easier. Now it can get through the mud a whole lot easier than it could get through that hard, dry ground, that’s the former rain, it gets things started well.
• you gotta stand in the rain
o it’s the former rain that starts the process of growth
And when it rains, the nutrients that are in the dirt are released and
o but it’s the latter rain that brings you into maturity
the plant is able to receive those nutrients from the ground—when it rains. You’ve heard of fertile ground or nutrient rich soil? The rain is how those transfer to the plant.
the plant is able to push through—when it rains

• and when the yes comes…
the plnat is able to mature—when it rains
rains
the plant is on its journey to becoming—when it rains

What about you, can you stay in the rain long enough to mature into what God wants you to be?
In Deut, Moses is giving these instructions to the people of Israel, God’s chosen people and he’s telling them that if—there’s that big little word, if they hearken diligently, if you carefully obey the commands I am giving you today—if you love the Lord your God and serve him with all your heart and soul…
And when it rains, the nutrients that are in the dirt are released and
Now let me stop right there for just a moment…what does that look like today? What does loving God and serving Him with all your heart and soul look like?
It’s being faithful in all you do—rain
It’s coming to church to worship every Sunday—rain
It’s coming to Bible study—rain
It’s participating in intercessory prayer, if you can be here in the house, there is power in corporate prayer—rain
It’s telling others about the goodness of the Lord—rain
It’s bringing them to church—rain
It’s making the sacrifice to come, even when you don’t feel good—rain
It’s coming even when you’d rather be somewhere else—rain
It’s giving your tithe and offering when it looks like you’ve got more month than money—rain
It’s doing what you’re assigned to do, what you volunteered to do, what you’re led to do, letting your yea be yea and your nea be nea—rain
It’s recognizing that faith without works is dead. Knowing that you don’t work to get saved, but you work because you are saved. James said, a man may say, you have faith, and I have works: show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works—rain
Stay in the rain—church it’s beginning to rain and I need you here,
so you can grow
so you can mature
so you can be who God has called you to be
so you can receive the blessing God has for you
so Love Christian Center can be the group of called out believers, God has called us to be
So we can fulfill the goals we’ve been given for this branch of Zion
1. To win lost souls for Christ through evangelism.
2. To biblically educate Christians through sound Scriptural teaching.
3. To equip Christians spiritually, physically and financially through comprehensive coaching.
God has placed gifts in this body for the edification of the saints, for the work of the ministry. I have a question for you, what are you doing to develop your gift? When’s the last time you invited someone to church, when’s the last time you approached someone you didn’t know about the Gospel? Are you serving God with all your heart and soul so He will give you the rain you need in due season—when it’s your time?
Where’s your fruit, where’s your harvest? God sent the rain so they could gather in the corn and wine and oil, so they could gather their harvest. The harvest is ripe, but the laborers are few. There are a whole lot of unsaved, unchurched people out there, why is it so empty in here?
God is giving us grass, so we can eat and be full, in other words he’s giving us his Word through song, through the responsive reading, through giving our tithe and offering, through the preached Word of God so we may eat, and digest and understand and be full of the Holy Ghost. Full of power, full of boldness, full of a desire to see others come to faith in Christ. Stand in the rain.
As I said, in the Old Testament, the Children of Israel, God’s chosen people took the abundance or lack of rain as the favor or displeasure of God. But when we look at I got something to tell you…
But you are a chosen generation, you were chosen before the foundation of the world was laid to be exactly who you are with gifts and talents to do exactly what God created you to do. Stop trying to do something else. Stop trying to do what looks like fun, what looks easy, what looks interesting and do what God gave you to do. When you don’t the area you’re supposed to be in goes lacking. Amen?
You are a royal priesthood, you have been adopted into a royal family, God is our Father and Jesus Christ, the Savior of the whole world is our brother. He gave his life to make it so.
You are an holy nation, you can’t just do whatever you want or say what comes to your mind or go where you want; your life now reflects the family to which you have become a part. When you were little there were certain places you couldn’t go because your parents weren’t familiar with them, when you got to be a teenage there were certain people you couldn’t hang around with because your parents did know them and now as an adult and a member of the body of Christ we have a responsibility to represent our Father and to do well. With style and elegance and grace and honesty and compassion and love. We do all things in love.
You are a peculiar people, you will believe no matter what it looks like, no matter what it feels like, no matter what anyone says. The world will say you’re strange, but while we are in this world, we are not of this world and it is not our home, we’re just passing through on our way to our final destination. This right here, is just a lay over—now how nice your layover is depends on you.
We tell friends and family members if you ever find yourself stuck in the Atlanta airport for any length of time, call us and we’ll come get you so you don’t have to sit there for hours. We can come get you and take you to get something to eat or even bring to our house if you have that much time. It’s our goal to make their wait a little more comfortable.
How’s your wait? Are you doing what you need to do to make it more comfortable? You see if they never call us, there’s nothing we can do to help. Now God has an advantage, He knows all things, but He still said call Him, ask Him, you have not because you ask not. What’s you’re layover look like?
As a peculiar people, we don’t respond to crisis like the world responds,
• the plant is able to receive those nutrients from the ground—when it rains. You’ve heard of fertile ground or nutrient rich soil? The rain is how those transfer into the plant.
we respond as someone with hope
We respond as someone who knows we are God’s very own possession
we respond as someone who knows God is Elohim, the Creator of heaven and earth
we respond as someone who knows God is El-Shaddai the God Almighty of blessings
we respond as someone who knows God is Jehovah Jireh—my Provider
we respond as someone who knows God is Jehovah Nissi—my Victory, my Banner and my Standard
we respond as someone who knows God is Jehovah Rapha—the Lord who heals
we respond as someone who knows God is Adoni—my Lord and my Master
we respond as someone who knows God is Jehovah Shalom—my peace
we respond as someone who knows God is Jehovah Rohi—my Shepherd
we respond as someone who knows God is Jehovah-Shammah—the One who will never leave or forsake me
we respond as someone who knows God is Jehovah Rapha—the Lord who heals
we respond as someone who knows God is Jehovah—the completely self existing One
we respond as someone who knows God is in control
we respond as someone who knows God is in control
we respond as someone who knows God has not forgotten about you
we respond as someone who knows God will take care of you
we respond as someone who knows God is I Am that I Am
we respond as someone who knows God is Jehovah Rapha—the Lord who heals
we respond as someone who knows God is Jehovah
And when we know all that, when we can recognize all that, when we can accept all that, we can show others the goodness of God, we can love our neighbor as ourselves, we can invite our neighbor to church, we can have compassion for our neighbor, we can pray for our neighbor and who is our neighbor, anyone we see as we go on our way.
You can without reservation and without shame share what God has done for you. How He brought you out darkness, whatever your darkness was. Our darkness or testimonies will not be the same. You truly have no idea the journey the person standing before has taken to get where they are. And don’t envy where they stand today, because their way was probably not easy and their journey, just like yours continues. Until you see Jesus, your journey is ongoing, so there’s no time to stop. Yes absolutely take your rest, the Sabbath was built for man, but that is a time to recharge, reconnect, regroup and renew your strength for the journey, for the battle that lies ahead of you.
Satan never stops and neither should we and we have to stick together in this fight. Because God is our Rock, one can put a thousand to flight, but two can put ten thousand to flight, now you math wizzes out there work those numbers. There is strength and encouragement and support and help in numbers. Stay with the pack. As tempting as it may be when times get rough to separate yourself don’t do it. Hang in there with the pack, we won’t leave you, we’ll stay there with you in the fight, but you have to take the leap first, no one can take it for you, no one can do what you do, the way you do it.
When God made you, He made you an original, stop trying to be a cheap imitation of someone else, don’t even desire to be, that’s called coveting. God made you wonderful, in fact He said you are fearfully and wonderfully made, you are His masterpiece, the apple of His eye, He gave His only begotten Son for you to be reconciled to Him. Why are you looking at someone else? Stop it.
For those whom God has chosen as His very own, you received the former rain to get you started. When you confessed with your mouth and believed in your heart that Jesus is the Son of God, that He was born of a virgin, died, rose again after three days and then ascended back to the Father where he now sits at his right hand interceding on your behalf … that was the former rain.
But there are those of you who have been on this path for a minute, you’ve been faithful, you’ve made yourself available for the work of Christ and the ministry and you’ve availed yourself to the teaching; for you; you’re ready for the later rain, that rain that comes to mature you, to grow you up to get you closer to who God has called you to be, doing what God has called you to do.
- But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;

And there are those of you who have been on this path for a minute, you’ve been faithful, you’ve made yourself available for the work of Christ and the ministry and you’ve availed yourself to the teaching; for you; you’re ready for the later rain, that rain that comes to mature you, to grow you up to get you closer to who God has called you to be, doing what God has created you to do.
You are the light of the world, don’t dim your light for anyone, in or outside your house. Stand up and be the man or woman of God, he called you to be. The latter rain is coming, stay—in the rain.
The doors of the church are open.
