As we have been walking through Matthew we have experienced so much as we walk with Matthew’s through his encounter with Jesus.
We know that Mark and Luke tell their experience differently as we will all have the exact same encounter, but will describe it in their own words.
Matthew 8:28-34
28 And when he came to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way. 29 And behold, they cried out, “What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?” 30 Now a herd of many pigs was feeding at some distance from them. 31 And the demons begged him, saying, “If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of pigs.” 32 And he said to them, “Go.” So they came out and went into the pigs, and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the waters. 33 The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, especially what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their region.
Jesus and His disciples made the trip across the Sea of Galilee and went through a few difficulties like a storm and Jesus sleeping. They kind of freaked out a little and woke up Jesus, then He spoke to the waves and calmed the sea’s and the winds.
When Jesus arrived with the disciples they were met by two demon possessed men coming out of a tomb. The tomb was their home because they couldn’t live with their families, they were violently attacking the people around them.
The people would not walk by the road they because they were fearful of these men.
28 And when he came to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way. 29 And behold, they cried out, “What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?”
Matthew 8:28-29
Jesus crosses over and the first thing He encounters are two demon possessed men and they at once they know who He is. Because they address Him as the Son of God and in the NKJV it also says You Jesus.
Demon possession is when we have allowed a demonic force or presence to take residence in our soul or person. A true follower of Jesus cannot be demon possessed! But they can be demon oppressed which would be like allowing something to be on you but not inside you and to control you.
When you are possessed you have allowed that spirit to take residence in your life.
When you are oppressed you allow that demon to influence you into making wrong and hurtful decisions.
“At once they screamed”), but here they scream out meaningful words. “What have we to do with you?” translates an expression Matthew uses only here.80 Literally it means “What to us and you?” and indicates that the speakers see no common ground between themselves and Jesus. The demoniacs have an understanding of the nature of Jesus not very common at the time, for they address him as Son of God, though, of course, we have no way of knowing what content they put into the expression.

19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!
80 τί ἡμῖν χαὶ σοί. It occurs twice in Mark and once in Luke and John (and in several places in LXX). BAGD regards it as a Hebraism that made its way into colloquial Greek with meanings like “what have I to do w. you? what have we in common? leave me alone! never mind!” They say, “It serves to refuse a request or invitation” (sub ἐγώ). Turner has an extensive examination of the expression (Grammatical Insights, pp. 43–47). He thinks that the context here “demands a meaning like ‘Why are you troubling us?’ ” (p. 43).
In James we are informed that if we believe in God that is great and we do well, but even the demons believe and they are fearful (Matthew uses the term shudder) as we see in this passage because they know what lies ahead for them.
Do we know and understand what lies ahead for us???
5 Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God.

These demons know what their judgment will be, just like each person who choses to disobey and or not to follow Jesus.
All the things that we think we are hiding in the darkness or in the depth of our heart will be revealed and then God will judge us. We can not hide anything from God.
We should know that God sees and knows all, that He is everywhere at all times and that He is all powerful.
30 Now a herd of many pigs was feeding at some distance from them. 31 And the demons begged him, saying, “If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of pigs.”
Matthew 8:30
What do we see here is that Matthew is letting us know that there are some pigs aways away feeding. We also know that there were those who were taking care of the swine in the distance.

Last week Pastor Jerry was talking about his encounter with demon possession it is a real thing and we need to be mindful of what we allow into our gates . We need to be very careful what we allow into our ear gate and into our eye gate, we are responsible for what we listen too and what we watch.

Demons know if you and I are full of the Spirit and presence of God and if the Holy Spirit reside in us. We have said this before, when you wake up do they go O’ crap or do they go O’ great we can mess with them again today.
32 And he said to them, “Go.” So they came out and went into the pigs, and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the waters.
Matthew 8:32
All Jesus had to do was speak the word to be gone and the demons had to leave.
All Jesus had to do was speak the word to be gone and the demons had to leave.
Why the pigs because the Jewish people believe that pork is unclean and so there was know better place to cast out the demons than into the pigs.
We should all come to know and understand the power of the freedom of Christ in our lives.
34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.
John
John 8
34 They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”
36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
There is power in the freedom of Jesus!
33 The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, especially what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their region.
Matthew 8
We see here that the herdsmen run off in fear to go tell the people of the town Gadara that this man just cast out the demons out of the demoniacs into their herd of pigs. And all the pigs went down the cliff into the sea and drown and now the two men are sane and in their right minds.
The towns people didn’t come to see Jesus and ask for healing and deliverance they cam to ask no beg Jesus to leave their region because He just took away their lively hood and part of their food source.
There is another very valuable lesson here, these men that were freed want to go with Jesus, but He said know go home to your friends and family and spread the Word about the power of the Son of God Jesus.
36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
John 8:
What is so powerful in this chapter is that we see Jesus heal the unclean leapers by His words, we see Him heal a centurion’s servant from afar, speaks to the cost of discipleship, speak to the seas and the winds to cease, talks about great faith and then little faith and then He finishes the chapter with freeing the demon possessed men.
Jesus has the authority to stop anything in its tracks just with a word a wave of His hand. When Jesus speaks their is total and complete authority only found in Him.
Jesus has passed that authority down to His disciples and to us who choose to follow Him.
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:18
