Salvation is by GRACE alone through FAITH alone.

The evidence of our salvation serves two purposes:

Provides ASSURANCE to our hearts in times of difficulty and repentance.

Provides EVIDENCE for others to see the impact of Salvation in our lives.

1 John 2:3–11 NASB95
By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. The one who says, “I have come to know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him: the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked. Beloved, I am not writing a new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning; the old commandment is the word which you have heard. On the other hand, I am writing a new commandment to you, which is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true Light is already shining. The one who says he is in the Light and yet hates his brother is in the darkness until now. The one who loves his brother abides in the Light and there is no cause for stumbling in him. But the one who hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

1 John 2:3–11 NKJV
Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked. Brethren, I write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you heard from the beginning. Again, a new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining. He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
Two things in this passage provide evidence of the presence of salvation and adoption are seen in this passage

Love to FOLLOW (vs. 3-6)

Following my Daddy

One of the saddest verses in scripture is

Genesis 3:8 NASB95
They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
Genesis 3:8 NKJV
And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
Often when people think of God’s commandments they focus on what activities they prohibit rather than on what they enable.

God’s laws were always there to POINT us to Him.

Romans 13:3 NKJV
For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same.
Romans 13:3 NASB95
For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same;

Keeping God’s COMMANDMENTS allows us to enjoy His PRESENCE.

Deuteronomy 6:5 NASB95
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
Psalm 37:3–5 NASB95
Trust in the Lord and do good; Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness. Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, and He will do it.
Deuteronomy
Proverbs 3:1–2 NASB95
My son, do not forget my teaching, But let your heart keep my commandments; For length of days and years of life And peace they will add to you.
Proverbs 3:5–6 NASB95
Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.
Psalm 122:1 NASB95
I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.”

As followers of Jesus we DELIGHT in living according to His PRINCIPLES.

Deuteronomy 6:5 NKJV
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
Psalm 37:3–5 NKJV
Trust in the Lord, and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass.
Deuteronomy 6:5
Proverbs 3:1–2 NKJV
My son, do not forget my law, But let your heart keep my commands; For length of days and long life And peace they will add to you.
Proverbs 3:5–6 NKJV
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.
Psalm 37:
Psalm 119:1 NASB95
How blessed are those whose way is blameless, Who walk in the law of the Lord.
I was glad when they said unto me
Psalm 122:1 NKJV
I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go into the house of the Lord.”

Love for PEOPLE (vs. 9-11)

Leviticus 19:18 NASB95
‘You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the Lord.
This was not a new commandment but the emphasis on it was new to the people.
In the Jewish world, even the charity given was given more out of a sense of obligation than a love for people.

John says if you don’t love God (as evidenced by obedience to His Word) and love people, you are not His child.

Or Choose the World

Matthew 22:36–40 NASB95
“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ “This is the great and foremost commandment. “The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ “On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”
What does that love look like?
Philippians 2:3–4 NASB95
Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.

Not what we GET out of it

Not how it makes us FEEL

Because we truly believe the other person is more IMPORTANT than we are.
