Don’t get too big for your britches
Don’t forget your raising
don’t forget where you came from
All these are sayings built on our bent toward forgetfulness of who we are and how we got here.
Fortune leads to forgetfulness
Someone has said if you see a turtle on a fence post, just know that someone else put it there, it did not get there on its own.
Moses says: You will in towns you didn’t build, houses that were someone else’s, drinking water from a well someone else labored for, and filled with food you didn’t produce.
Here are some great principles
Blessing can lead to downfall.
Serious thinking leads to genuine thanking!
Abundance often gives birth to arrogance.
“I worked for what I have” Maybe so, but I bet there was some folks helping you along the way.
And I am sure that God gave you the mind and body to work, and the work to make the money.
The Antidote- Awe, Adoration, Attachment
Awe-Fear- The proper attitude toward a God so much bigger than you
Adoration- Worship- show my love toward God
Attachment- take oaths in his name- be known as belonging to God.
False Gods lead to Forgetfulness
Jesus said you can’t serve two masters.
When we start to let our guard down, other things creep in.
When we are at rock bottom, we know we need God, but as things get better, we can become distracted by what others are chasing after, and soon we have fallen trap to the gods of the people around us.
Antidote- Remember what God is like
Foolish Pride leads to Forgetfulness
Massah is the place where Israel ran out of water decades earlier.
They people had a genuine need, but rather than calling out in faith, they grumbled in a faithless panic.
They were ready to stone Moses, and they questioned if God was God and if He was willing and able to take care of them.
Antidote- Keep Trusting and Obeying
Obviously these verses of promise have immediate application for Israel as they prepare to possess Promised Land.
God has not made a promise to Christians about our land.. heaven is our home.
Our promises from God are not based on the keeping on the law, but on Christ having kept the law for us.
But as Christians we ARE called to Trust and Obey.
The Promised land is symbolic of a Christian who is walking in God’s will.
He prospers us, He fights our battles for us, He takes care of our enemies.
We can’t and shouldn’t try to take care of our problems by ourselves, and we sure shouldn’t become angry and accusing when God hasn’t done what we think he should when we think he should.
