Studying for this lesson was life-giving for me! It was so good, fresh, helpful! Turns out, I still have a lot to learn about this church word. Today we’re talking about WORSHIP.

Worship is a church-y word.

Come “worship” with us.
Join us for “worship service”
Let’s praise God in “worship”.
When we talk about worship like that, it sounds like the word worship means the part of the church gathering/service when there is music or singing. Now that’s a wrong understanding of worship. But let’s be careful! Worship is more than that!

Saying singing to God = worship is like saying putt putt golf = sports.

There’s a time/place for putt putt. It is a good game, it can be competitive, require skill/luck, all the things that a sport requires. But we’d all agree when we talk about “sports” we’re talking about more than just putt putt golf! Just like there is more to “sports” than putt putt, there is more to “worship” than singing/music.

You can worship anytime, anywhere, with or without anyone. It’s an attitude, an action, a thought, a motive, a lifestyle.

I feel like Dr. Seuss, “could you would you with a mouse? could you would you in a house? Could you would you on a train? Could you would you in the rain?”
worship is more than singing. You can worship at school, at home, during a church service, when you’re surrounded by friends, when you’re by yourself, every moment of every day. That’s, the goal, btw. Here’s a churchy phrase - “Live a life of worship”.
You’re like: “okay, I get it. Worship is more than singing, but singing and stuff is still worship. But you still haven’t told me! WHAT IS WORSHIP?!”

Worship is a response

It is a response. It’s like a call and an answer. What do you say when you pick up a phone call? “hello?” Can you imagine the confusion if you called someone and the first thing you said was “hello?” “hello” is what someone says when you call them. You are calling, they are answering. Worship is a response. It’s comes AFTER something has already happened.
So what happened or happens that causes us to respond by doing this thing called worship?
Here’s the deal, each of us will and should answer that question differently. It comes down to this: What has God done in your life? That is the fuel that drives your worship.
For many, that may be the first time you’ve ever considered that. For others that may not be the first time you’ve considered that today.
For some, you can say God has saved me. I’m a Christian and I’m going to heaven when I die. Others can say, God has been with me in my darkest moments. God rescued me. All of us can say, THANK you God, for giving me life! Everyone take a deep breath. WOW! Everyone in this room has a reason to praise/worship God. That breath, came from God!
Psalm 150:6 ESV
6 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!
So worship is a response to what God is doing in our lives.
Are you starting to see how worship is more than just singing? It’s a heart/mind/soul type deal. It’s more about God than it is us!
So God has done incredible things! We are recognizing, being thankful, and responding to God by worshiping. (talking about Christians and our role in worship)
1 Peter 2:9 NIV
9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
Worshiping God is one of our purposes in life!
Worship is shouting from the rooftops that He is GOOD, He is AWESOME! GOD is WORTHY!
That’s literally what worship means

Worship is recognizing God’s status as worthy

Think about these words: citizenship, sportsmanship, marksmanship.
Citizenship - when you are a good citizen, you help others, improve the lives of those around you.
Sportsmanship - when you demonstrate you are a classy sportsman. You appreciate the skill in others and don’t treat your competition or teammates as being inferior to you.
Marksmenship - When you shoot a gun you hit the target, you are a good marksmen.
If you got an award for citizenship, sportsmanship, or marksmenship it means somone was recognizing your oustanding _____ status. It means you represent what all _____ should be.
So worship is recognizing God’s status as worthy! Worthy means deserving, better than all others, the best.
Psalm 95:6–7 ESV
6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! 7 For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. Today, if you hear his voice,
Psalm 117:1–2 ESV
1 Praise the Lord, all nations! Extol him, all peoples! 2 For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord!

WORSHIP

So worship is a response, it is looking at your life and recognizing, appreciating how God is at work in your life and desiring to give him the credit he deserves! Life without worshiping God is plagiarism.
another thought to consider:

Worship is moving toward God.

Worship is this shift in attitude where we are thankful and want to draw closer to God.
You can worship God in a quick prayer. Thinking about God throughout your day “God, I know you are with me. Let me continually think about you.”
At school you can worship God by your actions. When you demonstrate to others, even your teachers, how much God has made a difference in your life. Where instead of gossiping you choose to talk about something else or when you treat people as a person highly valued by God. Even the uncool, unpopular, annoying, hateful, draining people. That is worship.
Notice that I’m saying it’s “moving towards”. When we think about God, live like Jesus we are taking baby-steps toward God. Worship is a trajectory. Worship isn’t teleportation to the destination of becoming like God. It’s telling your map app that your destination is God and continuing on that journey toward becoming more like Him. Worship is coming back to God.

Singing as worship.

I told you at the beginning that worship is more than singing, but we still need to talk about singing.
Worship is personal at times, but it also must include others!
Why does it matter? Why do we sing? Some of y’all don’t mind because you like to sing, others of you don’t like worship because you DON’T like to sing.
Music/Singing is a way people have expressed their emotions for thousands of years. We sing songs when we’re happy, we sing when we’re sad. Songs of worship are the same way.
Reason’s why we sing:
Because God tells us to
Ps 29:2
Eph 5:19
To teach/remember God’s word/truth
Col 3:16
Ps 95:1-3
To come back to God
Romans 12:1
To “church” with each other

Worship is moving toward God as a response to what he has done in our lives.
