Biblical:

NIV Acts 1:1 In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach

 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.

 3 After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.

 4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.

 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."

 6 So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?"

 7 He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.

 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

 9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.

 10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them.

 11 "Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven."

Personal:

  • We need to develop good habits…
    • When we ask our children to study…
      • Motive / Mission (Trade)
      • Tools…
  •  In Marriage… procrastinating is hardly flattering
  •  Demonstrating others first… gets things accomplished
    • When that is our mission

  •  And Jesus has so wonderfully supplied every tool we need to complete the mission

The Message:

NIV Acts 1:1 In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach

  • Refers to record in Luke’s Gospel
  •  Instructions through Holy Spirit… Inspired Word and Jesus Inspired actions
  • Know Jesus to Show Jesus
    • Core of evangelism is solid teaching and devotion to the Word
    • This is the message
  • So important… looks at Paul’s letters…

 NIV Ephesians 1:18 I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength,

 

NIV Philippians 1:9 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, 10 so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ,

 

NIV Colossians 1:9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. 10 And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully

 

NIV 2 Timothy 2:15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.

 

(-) NIV Hebrews 5:12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!

  • Focus on accuracy… on the Word…
  •  Why is doctrine important…
    • Reflects our understanding of the Word
    • Reflects our understanding of Salvation
    • Reflects our understanding of our Savior
    • Reflects our understanding of God
  • A Map… very helpful
    • NYC… a map was my best friend
    • Winding and twisting roads
    • Helped to orient me
    • BUT if you read it wrong…
    • It doesn’t matter how accurate you think you are… you are going to get lost
    • WE NEED TO BE GOOD MAP READERS!!
  • The right message leads to Salvation
  • A wrong message leads elsewhere
  • BAD DIRECTIONS (Gas Station)
  • People are following us and following our directions…
  • God gave orders… (strong instruction towards truth!!) entello
  • We can’t support misunderstandings in doctrine
  • We have to lead well… in our understanding and our lives… we need to understand and live the Message!!
  • Tool #1 – The Message

The Manifestation:

3 After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.

  • Tool #2 - Manifestation
  •  Jesus appeared to them “through forty days (Gk.)”
  •  Entered locked rooms, showed his wounds, ate and drank with them…
  •  No mistake now..
    • Saw him minister
    • Saw him teach
    • Saw him heal and perform other miracles
    • Saw him tried, nailed to a cross, crucified, dead and buried!
    • NOW… have seen him alive… saw him ascended!!
  •  **Big Corporate direction change
    • Memo, motive, presentation by CEO
    • Power in presence!! (Juliani at NYC)
  •  2 Peter 1:16 We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty
  •  NIV John 20:29 Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."
  • NIV 1 Peter 1:8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy,
  • NIV Matthew 28:20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
  • NIV Isaiah 26:3 You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you.
  • Empowered – to speak the things of God
  • Encouraged – to be witnesses to the things of God
  • Steadfast – to be anchored in the truth…
  • Tool# 2 Manifestation
  • We have to lead well… in our understanding … we need to live as if our Saviour lives, is manifest in our lives!!

The Might:

 4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.

 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."

8a But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you

  • cf. NIV Luke 24:49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."
  • Sometimes we get… yea hah kind of excited…

  • Imagine the risen Christ telling you to hang on…
  •  Don’t get fired up and try to do it in your own strength and unprepared
    • Take the time to prepare your mind (Message)
    • Take the time to prepare your heart (Manifestation)
  •  Power…Might…MUST be accompanied by truth…
  •  T.A.B. – Power without the Word… Car without a steering wheel
  •  Prepared… Motivated…SUPERNATURALLY EMPOWERED… apostles empowering…also points to the empowering of God’s people
  • v.5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."
  • Not something we do… but because of the faith that originates in Christ we will be filled… empowered…
  • NIV Titus 3:5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior,

  • Tool# 3 Power of the Spirit – The Might
  • We have to lead well… in our understanding … we need to radiate the presence of our Saviour lives, and proclaim and live the message in the Power, The Might of the Holy Spirit!!

The Mystery:

 6 So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?"

 7 He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.

  • Tool# 4 The Mystery
  • The roller coaster
    • Messiah comes
    • Awaiting the political triumph for Israel
    • Suffering Servant…
    • Comes in humility
    • Dies on the cross
    • Rises again
    • Jesus you are going to have to wait… in the Father’s time
  •  Earnests…
    • NIV Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel."
    • Jesus has defeated Satan
    • Put Satan is still “Prince of the World”

    • Joel 2: 28 'And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. 29 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. 30 I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billows of smoke.
  •  The Lord has given power to the apostles
    • Revelatory and Sign Gifts… focused around his message * He has emboldened and empower his children with ministry gifts… leadership, helps, mercy…
  •  The full impact will not be known till the 2nd Coming
  •  We don’t know the time or date… the Son of Man is coming like a thief in the night…
  • If you know all about God… infinite capacity… you are God.
  • An important aspect of our relationship is a right understanding of WHO we are…
  • Tool# 4 The Mystery… in the Father’s Time
  • Inevitability, certainty of the event… vs. not knowing when – a strong tool
    • A tool to pry from Apathy
  • We have to lead well… in our understanding … we need to radiate the presence of our Saviour lives, and proclaim and live the message in the Power, The Might of the Holy Spirit!!… and we need to humbly submit to the mystery in the Word…

The Mission:  (TRADE)

 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

  • This is the pivoting point… the most crucial moment in the birth of the Church!!

WHY – The Message, The Manifestation, the Might, The Mystery… because we have a mission

  • It is not for a cozy little faith…
  • For the construction worker the shovel is more than just something to lean on… get to work!!
  • Judea – Home turf, Samaria – Your unsavoury neighbour, to the very ends of the planet!
  •  “This beginning was to dramatically alter the course of history, and the spread of the gospel message has continued past Acts to reach all of the earth. Today, believers continue to have the responsibility for being Christ’s witnesses throughout this world. The sphere for this witnessing is as extensive as the kingdom – all the world. And that was and is the mission for the church until Jesus comes.” J MacArthur.
  •  We have to lead well… in our understanding … we need to radiate the presence of our Saviour lives, and proclaim and live the message in the Power, The Might of the Holy Spirit!!… and we need to humbly submit to the mystery in the Word… And share that around the corner and around the globe!!
  •  Our Trade… is our mission!
  •  

The Motive:

 9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. 10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11 "Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven."

  • Action based on a promise
    • We meet for appointments – a promise
    • We stay faithful – a promise
    • We can borrow – a promise
  • Jesus gave us a mission
  • Jesus will be back!
    • He will check on your progress…

Conclusion:

  • You have been given the message
    • Learning the message (Understand)
    • Living the message (live… witness)
    • Leading by the message
  •  You have been given the Manifestation
    • Jesus – Appeared
    • Jesus - Reappeared
      • Saw him minister
      • Saw him teach
      • Saw him heal and perform miracles
      • Saw him tried, nailed to a cross and crucified (DEAD and BURIED)
      • Saw him alive!!
    • Empowered, Encouraged and Steadfast
  •  You have seen the might
    • Proclaim the Word in the power of God
    • Empowered People (Gas… I didn’t put the explosive power in… but I can get it out)
  •  The Mystery
    • Know our place before God
      • (D.V. Lord willing or Act of God)
    • The ‘Uncertainty’ Pry Bar
  •  The Mission
    • Tell your neighbour
    • Live the witness
    • Glorify God
    • Around the corner & around the globe
  • The Motive
    • GOD PROMISED!!
