16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

This is the same cup of which we will partake tonight
This is the same cup of which we will partake tonight
Same with the bread
The bread and the cup not only unify us to one another but to Christ and to the Father through Christ.

Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?

Look at the physical representation of the worship of Israel
The worshipped on an altar
Were they partakers of the sacrifice? Yes
Does that make them partakers in the Lord? Yes

What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?

So what is an idol…does the god that is being worshipped need to be real in order for the worship to have significance

But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.

All of the sacrifices of the Gentiles are to devils
The Pillar New Testament Commentary: The First Letter to the Corinthians c. Those Who Worship God Must Refrain from Any Association with Idolatry, 10:14–22

Here Paul clarifies that his objection to participation in pagan religious meals reflects his understanding that although the idols themselves do not have any valid spiritual reality and do not represent actual gods, there is a spiritual reality behind them in that they have been created at the instigation of demons posing as gods and those worshiping them worship those demons

Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils.

This concept is found throughout Scripture
Can a well bring forth sweet and bitter water
Can a tree bring forth two different fruits
James says that a doubleminded man is unstable in all his ways
You cannot serve. two masters You cannot serve God and wealth

Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

Here is a question for us this evening.
Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy
Do we worship at a false altar all week and come to the Lord on Sundays?
Do we worship at the altar of:
Work
Relationships
Sex
Money
Prominence
Are we stronger than God?
Absolutely not…but this seems to be a reference back to , the song of Moses
vv. 35-36
To me belongeth vengeance, and recompence;
Their foot shall slide in due time:
For the day of their calamity is at hand,
And the things that shall come upon them make haste.
36 For the Lord shall judge his people,
And repent himself for his servants,
When he seeth that their power is gone,
And there is none shut up, or left.
vv. 37-39
And he shall say, Where are their gods,
Their rock in whom they trusted,
38 Which did eat the fat of their sacrifices,
And drank the wine of their drink offerings?
Let them rise up and help you,
And be your protection.
39 See now that I, even I, am he,
And there is no god with me:
I kill, and I make alive;
I wound, and I heal:
Neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand.
There is none stronger than the Lord…He is the only sovereign one
Do we in our daily lives display a heart attitude of self-sufficiency and then come to church and give him praise?
That is provoking the Lord to jealousy and acting like we are stronger than He is.
Like we have it all figured out.
So as we come to the Communion table tonight...
The Pillar New Testament Commentary: The First Letter to the Corinthians d. Freedom Should Be Used for the Glory of God, 10:23–11:1

“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive. 24 No one should seek their own good, but the good of others

Who are you serving?
What dominated your worship?
The Lord
or the world?
That is the question before us tonight
Are we so enamored with the world that through our worship of the world we provoke the Lord to jealousy
Do you have split affections?
You can not divide your worship.
As Joshua challenges the Israelites....choose you this day who you will serve
Check your heart tonight as we come to the table and examine who you are worshipping.
