Intro

1832- Great Britain passed the Anatomy Act, which legalized a much broader use of Cadaver idssection. Prior to that, only medical college of London and only executed. So black market. 1820’s- William Burke and Willam Hare made practice.... So successful, KNox medical clinic at least 16… Eventually called “Burking.” Ironically, Hare turned on Burke, and helped convict him—sentenced to death and dissection. That shifted for most of western Christian world, although some places still illegal in America into 20th C.
Why matters? Well, if I have certain symptoms taht suggest appendicitis, doctor can remove mine with little effort because it’s just like every other one he or she has seen.
When I talk with couple preparing for marriage, easy to encourage certain things and predict certain things because been there so many times.
*** Exposure offers clarity—either by more thorough exposure or more repeated exposure.
Remember beginning of Acts--”continued to do”—this continuing story forms the basis not only of the history of our fath, but also lays the groundwork for understainding how it all works.
Acts is a story of events in the life of the early church—about 40% various people, and about 60% Paul. Which may roughly be about the ration of the NEW Testament books—at least past the gospels. That’s worth knowing because it’s the events in Acts and the ones like them that offer the material of the Epistles.
Acts stories provide the basis of the Epistles teaching.
More simply, the events we see produce the doctrines we teach.
see what happened in Corinth, understand 1&2 Corinthians and vice versa
…Thessalonians...
Ephesus...
*** Especially true about Ephesus—Ephesians, 1 & 2 Timothy, Corinthians written there: and a great deal of Acts covers high-exposure events there—lots of material to work with
8** And in this, see many issues Paul struggled to work with people about:
fights and division,
Immaturity and growth
Spirituality and the supernatural
*** the greater teh exposure, by the Holy Spirit’s inspiration, the greater the clarity--”what happens when faith meets life in this kind of moment?
Begin to see patterns
Cf types of clouds—lots of variety, but really only a limited number of types
Cf personality—MBTI—16, DISC, 4 main ones, etc
medicine, psychology
Cf
Proverbs 20:30 ESV
30 Blows that wound cleanse away evil; strokes make clean the innermost parts.
Proverbs 30:20 ESV
20 This is the way of an adulteress: she eats and wipes her mouth and says, “I have done no wrong.”
Things going wrong with people (flesh functions)—not comprehensive, but see few main ones repeat:
Proverbs 30:21–23 ESV
21 Under three things the earth trembles; under four it cannot bear up: 22 a slave when he becomes king, and a fool when he is filled with food; 23 an unloved woman when she gets a husband, and a maidservant when she displaces her mistress.
Things going wrong with people (flesh functions)—not comprehensive, but see few main ones repeat:
Ephesians 2:1–3 ESV
1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
Ephesians 2:2–4 ESV
2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us,
Ephesians 2:1–4 ESV
1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us,
“passions of flesh” became “trespasses and sins”
*** Acts in Eph and throughout, see patterns:
sensuality (lust, drunkennes—note that Paul wrote to Corinthians while in Eph)
sentimentality (religious tradition) (Halloween, etc)
sensationalism (sorcery, etc—then magicians, then warning to Tim and in Acts)
self-preservation (silver smiths, slave girl owner) (Herod)
sincere error / misunderstanding / ignorance (darkened understanding)
Ephesians 4:18 ESV
18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart.
But in these events, Paul had to consider—what happens when the grace of God meets the passions of the flesh
Ephesians 2:4–5 ESV
4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—
Ephesians 2:4–7 ESV
4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
Ephesians 2:4–6 ESV
4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
Ephesians 2:10 ESV
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 2:6–9 ESV
6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
The genius of Paul is not just knowing what to say about them, but seeing that there were layers or realms of activity--
teh flech in me
the effects of the world on the flesh in me
teh effects of the devil on the world (or on the sons that influenced the world)
*** NOte even teh concerns in Eph—the cash and the sentiments
** But genius goes farther--
Battle is not between him and the people, but the Truth and the Liar
Ephesians 6:10–12 ESV
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
