Recap
This week is the final week of our Rest Series
wks ago we started this Rest Journey with R
R was for Refresh
Mark 6:30–32 NASB95
30 The apostles gathered together with Jesus; and they reported to Him all that they had done and taught. 31 And He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a while.” (For there were many people coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.) 32 They went away in the boat to a secluded place by themselves.
Church I sound like I am on repeat here
But understand that you and I are to be going away to a secluded place and spending time with Jesus
Jesus invites us to spend time with Him to refresh our souls
Church when we refresh our souls our cups are filled up and then we are ready to go and serve
Understand church the importance of refreshing our souls
Then the next week the letter was E
E was for Ease
Matthew 11:28–30 NASB95
28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 “For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Again this verse shows us that you and I are to run to Jesus for physical rest
We are not designed nor built to carry the baggage of this world
We were created to carry the load Jesus gives us
When we run to Jesus we find rest
We understand the importance of physically resting our bodies as we grow in our personal relationship with Jesus
Last week the letter was S
S was for Stay
Isaiah 41:10 NASB95
10 ‘Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’
Jesus is our stay in this world
Rather than riding the waves of this life we are to remain in the constant
We are to build our foundation on the constant
This verse gives us evidence of the constant
These are the promises that you and I can and need to hide in our hearts so that when the storms of life happens
So that when good or bad things happen we can recall these scriptures and these promises and begin to build our foundation on
This finally bings us to our last letter
The letter for this week is T
T is for Trust
probably the best example of Resting in God in terms of trusting God
Come from when God institutes the sabbath
Exodus 16:22–27 NASB95
22 Now on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one. When all the leaders of the congregation came and told Moses, 23 then he said to them, “This is what the Lord meant: Tomorrow is a sabbath observance, a holy sabbath to the Lord. Bake what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and all that is left over put aside to be kept until morning.” 24 So they put it aside until morning, as Moses had ordered, and it did not become foul nor was there any worm in it. 25 Moses said, “Eat it today, for today is a sabbath to the Lord; today you will not find it in the field. 26 “Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, the sabbath, there will be none.” 27 It came about on the seventh day that some of the people went out to gather, but they found none.
In these verse we see God give Moses the instructions and now Moses is giving those instructions to the people
They were instructed to gather manna every day and then on the 6th day they were to gather double
Because as we see in the verse the 7th day is a Sabbath day
It is holy and set apart
It is to be different than the rest of the days
Part of that difference is they were not to go and gather manna like the other days
Notice it doesn’t say that God would not provide for them
God gave them specific instructions that on the 6th day they were to go and gather double
And they were to go ahead and cook it and then set it aside for the 7th day
They had to trust that God would not spoil it like they did when they first God manna
If you can recall that story they begin to gather manna and they often gathered more than they needed and the left overs were spoiled by the next day
God begins to call them to trust Him
Then He begins to call them not to gather any manna any food on the 7th day
you can imagine the questions Moses got at this point
Moses how are we to eat
How do you expect me to feed my family
Moses I have kids, Moses I have a large family
I believe Moses continue to share with them that God would provide
They simply needed to trust in God
And when they began to do that church they found rest in the Lord
Please hear me I am not saying that you simply need to trust Jesus and not do anything
I believe that He provides for us just like He provided for Israelites with the manna
I do think rather than finding rest and trust in your bank account, your retirement, your paycheck
You begin to find rest and trust in Jesus that He will provide for your needs
Understand that the Israelites weren’t given a steak dinner or their wants, they were given their needs
They began to find rest by trust God to provide for them because when they do that and when you and I do that
We stop the anxiety, we stop the stressing, we stop the busy work so that we can say we have accomplished something
When we begin to believe the things written about God we begin to trust Him
Leviticus 25:1–6 NASB95
1 The Lord then spoke to Moses at Mount Sinai, saying, 2 “Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘When you come into the land which I shall give you, then the land shall have a sabbath to the Lord. 3 ‘Six years you shall sow your field, and six years you shall prune your vineyard and gather in its crop, 4 but during the seventh year the land shall have a sabbath rest, a sabbath to the Lord; you shall not sow your field nor prune your vineyard. 5 ‘Your harvest’s aftergrowth you shall not reap, and your grapes of untrimmed vines you shall not gather; the land shall have a sabbatical year. 6 ‘All of you shall have the sabbath products of the land for food; yourself, and your male and female slaves, and your hired man and your foreign resident, those who live as aliens with you.
Again God is calling the nation of Israel into a deeper relationship with Him
He is calling them to trust Him
Same sort of deal only now he is saying that every 7th year let your land rest
The questions only grow now because we are talking about peoples lively hood
This would have been how they provided not just food but everything for their families
But God is calling the nation to trust that He will provide for them
And again church God is calling us to that same sort of relationship
Just because we can go to the grocery store when every we want to buy mostly whatever we want whenever doesn’t mean we are not to trust in the Lord
It might be more difficult today to trust God because we have most things at our fingertips and often times forget God throughout the process
But church if we can expect to truly rest then we must trust in the Lord
Proverbs 3:5 NASB95
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding.
Church this is a gut check rather than a call
This is a nudge to remind yourself to stop falling back on what you can understand and come up with
If all you aim for is what you can attain on your own then that is all you will ever get
Start to trust and stop only doing things you can understand
God created dirt
God spoke things into existence
Begin to trust the God who loves you and pursues a relationship with you
Psalm 9:10 NASB95
10 And those who know Your name will put their trust in You, For You, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.
Believers you should be trusting in the Lord
Would you know that when you and I begin to trust in the Lord
We begin to seek Him and this scripture says that when we seek Him He won’t leave us out to dry
Church this is called faith when you and I believe what the Bible says about God to be trust and begin to act on that belief and faith that is trust
If you and I truly want to rest from the many stresses of this world then we will begin to trust in the Lord God
Finally church
Ephesians 2:8–9 NASB95
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Earlier we talk about not leaning on your own understanding
Salvation is not something you can do
Salvation is not something you can earn
This is why salvation is difficult for many people to understand because it isn’t something they can earn
It is really something I don’t believe we can fully understand this side of Heaven
This is why trust is so important because without it there is no salvation
See salvation is Faith in God
It is believe who Jesus said He was and believing that God raised Him from the dead and turning from your sin and running after Jesus
You and I need to trust that Jesus is who He says He is, because if you are going to trust Jesus and
then you are not trusting Jesus
Salvation is simply trusting Jesus to save you from your sin
When we do that He calls us to repent which is to turn from you and my sin
To change your mind of the way you have been living
To turn around
This is what it is to repent
Closing
As we move into this time of invitation
Church I want to invite you this morning to trust Jesus
Maybe you are here today and have never trusted Jesus to be your savior
Maybe you have never trusted Jesus with your entire life
We want to invite you to the front to the altar and there will be people down front
Or maybe you have trusted Jesus with your heart but after sometime you are attempting to take part of your heart back from Jesus
Maybe you are struggling to trust Jesus and that is causing some unrest in your life
I want to invite you to simply trust Jesus
