Moses, God’s man, gathers the people of God together, and gives them instruction
He teaches them about the importance of the Sabbath, having rest. Every one of us need rest.
Make a day of rest - 1/2 day here and 1/2 day there
What I see from this is as well is that God was assuring His people that He is a patient and kind LORD that wasn’t going to overdrive them like the Egyptians rulers.
There was work to do, but their God is kind, patient, and longsuffering and was going to balance the work with rest just as He exampled through creation
Moses then instructs God’s people:

An offering commanded by the LORD

The LORD’s design
Exodus 35:4 KJV 1900
And Moses spake unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, This is the thing which the Lord commanded, saying,
The LORD was the Designer of the offering
Moses didn’t come up with a plan, but rather the LORD designed the offering to be the method by which His tabernacle would be built
As we’ve talked about the building project, the suggestion has come that we have some fund raisers
I’m not against the ideas, but may we look to follow by faith what the LORD designed.
The LORD has designed the offering, and, as the Designer, can He not provide through His people?
May I re-iterate what the LORD has laid upon my heart; SBC needs to see what our LORD can do. This is a step of faith that, as I’ve prayed, will demonstrate our trust in the LORD and belief in His Word.
Through faith God can move mountains! This building project is no mountain, but rather a small hill that God can provide through us, His people.
Received from God’s people
Exodus 35:5 KJV 1900
Take ye from among you an offering unto the Lord: whosoever is of a willing heart, let him bring it, an offering of the Lord; gold, and silver, and brass,
Take - not forcefully, but rather received as it is given
This is to be a willing offering from the heart
God instructed Moses and the Levites, who would teach and preach God’s Word, to receive the offering
God has maintained this throughout history and into the church
The tabernacle
The temple
Malachi 3:10 KJV 1900
Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be meat in mine house, And prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, If I will not open you the windows of heaven, And pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
Storehouse - this is the area where God’s work would draw funds from to pay any bills, make repairs, provide ministry services, etc
The church
1 Corinthians 16:1–3 KJV 1900
Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come. And when I come, whomsoever ye shall approve by your letters, them will I send to bring your liberality unto Jerusalem.
Paul was speaking of an offering taken on the 1st day of the week, Sunday, for the saints in Jerusalem.
The principle of giving to the local church in tithes and offerings is clearly recorded in Scripture

An offering willingly given to the LORD

Exodus 35:5 KJV 1900
Take ye from among you an offering unto the Lord: whosoever is of a willing heart, let him bring it, an offering of the Lord; gold, and silver, and brass,
God doesn’t want us to give an offering because we have to, but rather because our hearts want to express our love for the LORD
God desires us to willingly serve Him
Originated in the heart
Exodus 35:20–21 KJV 1900
And all the congregation of the children of Israel departed from the presence of Moses. And they came, every one whose heart stirred him up, and every one whom his spirit made willing, and they brought the Lord’s offering to the work of the tabernacle of the congregation, and for all his service, and for the holy garments.
Why would the Israelites give this offering?
He is their Redeemer
They were slaves in bondage under the oppressive hand of Pharoah and the taskmasters. They knew the pain of the whips, the demeaning language, the struggles of serving in slavery.
God gloriously redeemed them!
He brought them out with His powerful hand, parting the very sea before them, and destroying their enemies.
The LORD paid the price for the Israelites to be redeeemed, and expressed His grace and mercy to them through the very reemption from Egypt.
Galatians 3:13 KJV 1900
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
Titus 2:14 KJV 1900
Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
Revelation 5:9 KJV 1900
And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
He is their Provider
The LORD provided them with food, water, and even gave them favour over the Egyptians so they would give them much of what they left Egypt with.
The LORD met their every need from shade in the day and heat in the night down to the smallest detail of their shoes not wearing out
God had given them so much!
Galatians 2:20 KJV 1900
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
God has provided for us!
He is their LORD
God brought them into His care
Psalm 91:4 KJV 1900
He shall cover thee with his feathers, And under his wings shalt thou trust: His truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
The LORD loved them, cared for them, and delighted in the relationship He shared with them
This tabernacle was going to be symbol of God’s presence in their lives!
Brought from the heart
Exodus 35:21–22 KJV 1900
And they came, every one whose heart stirred him up, and every one whom his spirit made willing, and they brought the Lord’s offering to the work of the tabernacle of the congregation, and for all his service, and for the holy garments. And they came, both men and women, as many as were willing hearted, and brought bracelets, and earrings, and rings, and tablets, all jewels of gold: and every man that offered offered an offering of gold unto the Lord.
Their heart of love, gratitutde, and zeal for the LORD moved them to action
1 John 3:1 KJV 1900
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
1 John 4:19 KJV 1900
We love him, because he first loved us.
Their heart moved them to bring the offering

An offering appointed of the LORD

:
Exodus 35:22–29 KJV 1900
And they came, both men and women, as many as were willing hearted, and brought bracelets, and earrings, and rings, and tablets, all jewels of gold: and every man that offered offered an offering of gold unto the Lord. And every man, with whom was found blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen, and goats’ hair, and red skins of rams, and badgers’ skins, brought them. Every one that did offer an offering of silver and brass brought the Lord’s offering: and every man, with whom was found shittim wood for any work of the service, brought it. And all the women that were wise hearted did spin with their hands, and brought that which they had spun, both of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, and of fine linen. And all the women whose heart stirred them up in wisdom spun goats’ hair. And the rulers brought onyx stones, and stones to be set, for the ephod, and for the breastplate; And spice, and oil for the light, and for the anointing oil, and for the sweet incense. The children of Israel brought a willing offering unto the Lord, every man and woman, whose heart made them willing to bring for all manner of work, which the Lord had commanded to be made by the hand of Moses.
They gave what they had
God used their desires to take these materials from the Egyptians
They gave their desires to the LORD
They could only give what they had
We cannot give what someone else has. We can only give what the LORD has given us.
Take coffee to work instead of buying it on the way
Bring dinner for work instead of a takeaway
Buy a bottle of water instead of pop
Search to see if you can switch car/home insurance for a better price
Search to see if you can switch from one utility company to another for a better price
Ask the person at the till if they have any extra change to give to the building project
Something in the garage we’re not using that we could sell for the LORD
Instead of eating out with the family chose to stay home and give that money to the project
Ask God to help you to be creative as you look at your finances to save money or give as He directs
They gave of themselves
God gave back
They were blessed
Exodus 39:43 KJV 1900
And Moses did look upon all the work, and, behold, they had done it as the Lord had commanded, even so had they done it: and Moses blessed them.
Dad helped with buying a plane
God was with them
Exodus 40:34–38 KJV 1900
Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. And when the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the children of Israel went onward in all their journeys: But if the cloud were not taken up, then they journeyed not till the day that it was taken up. For the cloud of the Lord was upon the tabernacle by day, and fire was on it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys.
God’s grace changed their lives
God provided their needs
God protected them from their enemies
God would bring their families into the Promised Land
God
I have seen God bless. I have seen God provide in ways that are absolutely incredible.
My heart yearns for you to see what God can do in your life, your family, and in our church.
It all begins with us, from the heart, choosing to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit.
