Matthew 9:12–13 NASB95
But when Jesus heard this, He said, “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick. “But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire compassion, and not sacrifice,’ for I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Scene: Jesus is walking with those who are seeking to learn from him.
Our episode that we will look at today is the calling of Matthew/Levi in and Jesus’ teaching moment at a reception that Matthew held for him afterward at his house.
There are 4 “characters” in this story that raise 4 questions for us as we seek to have God teach us about ministry and God’s Character.

Levi

To Do:

Disciples Already Following Christ

Time: 20-25 minutes

Pharisees and Scribes

Tax Collectors and Sinners

Scripture: Luke 5:27-32

Let’s start from the End…So that we can see God’s heart
Tax Collectors and Sinners
Ezekiel 18:32 NASB95
“For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone who dies,” declares the Lord God. “Therefore, repent and live.”
(1) 3 difference in your mind of being someone who goes to “church” or attends a church” vs. being a christ-follower?
Proverbs 14:12 NASB95
There is a way which seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.
Matthew 4:16 NASB95
The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great Light, And those who were sitting in the land and shadow of death, Upon them a Light dawned.”
Romans 6:21 NASB95
Therefore what benefit were you then deriving from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the outcome of those things is death.
Matthew 4:19 NASB95
And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
(2) Why do you think we struggle with being merciful but not receiving mercy?
Luke 13:34 NASB95
“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not have it!
(2) Why do you think we struggle with being merciful but not receiving mercy?

Pharisees and Scribes

2. Pharisees/Scribes - Jesus cares about people in a way I do not, what does he understand that I do not?
That he wants none to die - but all to be with Him
In our natural proclivities we do not want this
James 5:19–20 NASB95
My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth and one turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.
1 Peter 4:8 NASB95
Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins.
Proverbs 10:12 NASB95
Hatred stirs up strife, But love covers all transgressions.
Pproverbs 10:12

Disciples already following Christ

3. Disciples already following Christ - as you are already following what does it look like for someone to join your ranks?
Illustration of Jesus’ disciples following him, calling others out of their old lives and joining the family
It looks like treating them as Christ has treated you, that he cares for you
what does Jesus ask John in - if you love me feed my sheep
1 Timothy 1:15 NASB95
It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all.
Pharisees are asking - “why do you do ministry like this. They understood people and what they needed differently than Jesus
They thought people were in or out. Those in had to act like it and those out were not to be associated with.
Jesus thought that those in should pursue those who were out to teach them how to be as they were.

Levi

4. Levi - How does Levi/Matthew come to follow?
(A) We must notice others, particularly that they are ready for something else
(B) We must ask them to come with us on this journey of following Christ
(C) We must bring Christ in to every place we are and every relationship we have
A disciple of Christ is one who studies under Christ, who submits himself to the teaching of Jesus, who listens as the Master speaks, who seeks to understand what the Master is saying, and to emulate the response that the Master requires. The life of a disciple is one of service, study and obedience. (RC Sproul)
mercy implies compassion, compassion implies intention - we must intend to want better for others
Illustration of Jesus’ disciples following him, calling others out of their old lives and joining the family
Matthew 4:19 NASB95
And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Is is because of God’s desire to reconcile people to himself for them to again find life that he needs to teach us his heart and his methods
A Walk with God: Luke 22. Jesus Calls Levi (Luke 5:27–39)

When Jesus saw Levi, he walked over to him and simply said, ‘Follow me.’ These words can be seen as an invitation to join the intimate group of disciples that surrounded Jesus during his earthly ministry, but there is a literalism involved in that command that is often overlooked. Jesus, as was the case with other rabbis in the ancient world, was what we call a ‘peripatetic’ teacher. He would move about the countryside with a group of students around him who would follow him wherever he went. As Jesus walked down the street or through the community, the disciples would walk along behind him, committing to memory the words he uttered. Thus a disciple was a person who joined himself to the company of a rabbi and was committed to mastering whatever it was that the rabbi could transmit to him by way of teaching. The word, disciple, is the word, mathetes, which means, simply, learner. A disciple of Christ is one who studies under Christ, who submits himself to the teaching of Jesus, who listens as the Master speaks, who seeks to understand what the Master is saying, and to emulate the response that the Master requires. The life of a disciple is one of service, study and obedience.

Ezekiel 18:27–32 NASB95
“Again, when a wicked man turns away from his wickedness which he has committed and practices justice and righteousness, he will save his life. “Because he considered and turned away from all his transgressions which he had committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die. “But the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not right.’ Are My ways not right, O house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are not right? “Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, each according to his conduct,” declares the Lord God. “Repent and turn away from all your transgressions, so that iniquity may not become a stumbling block to you. “Cast away from you all your transgressions which you have committed and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! For why will you die, O house of Israel? “For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone who dies,” declares the Lord God. “Therefore, repent and live.”

“I desire compassion more than sacrifice” - I am so
Pharisees are asking - “why do you do ministry like this. They understood people and what they needed differently than Jesus
They thought people were in or out. Those in had to act like it and those out were not to be associated with.
Jesus thought that those in should pursue those who were out to teach them how to be as they were.
1 Timothy 1:15 NASB95

Jesus is not teaching us to simply feel bad for people or to understand where they come from
His compassion is wrapped up in “helping” us
we are to be with others the same as we are with each other
the relationship that he models is the same - it aims to call them out to call them back to himself
He is here to call us to repentance, out of his great compassion for us.
Examples of God’s Compassion
Adam and Eve in the garden - teach them to teach others
Noah - gave his family a way out
Abraham - opportunity to be a blessing to the nations
Moses - raised up a deliverer and mouth piece for the people of God
the Law given the Jewish people -
4. Tax Collectors and Sinners - what does Jesus want from me that he is spending time with me? Or if I am the person ministering what am I seeking to accomplish
He wants to teach you that there is another life than the one you have
Ezekiel 18:32 NASB95
“For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone who dies,” declares the Lord God. “Therefore, repent and live.”
It is here that he will begin to call others to repentance in his compassion
We must notice others, particularly that they are ready for something else

Sinner’s - irreligious jews
“I desire compassion more than sacrifice” - I am so compassionate that I want all who are away from me to be brought near. This will require much compassion on my part and your part.
It is here that he will begin to call others to repentance in his compassion
Mark 9:12–13 NASB95
And He said to them, “Elijah does first come and restore all things. And yet how is it written of the Son of Man that He will suffer many things and be treated with contempt? “But I say to you that Elijah has indeed come, and they did to him whatever they wished, just as it is written of him.”

Proverbs 14:12
Romans 6:21 NASB95

Romans
same thing said 2 ways
Jesus believed that death was in a life lived outside of his purposes - Do we believe that?
this is a real thing? Have you ever had anyone ask you what is wrong with the way I live? If they did, would you tell them that it will end in death?
Jesus did -
repent for the Kingdom of heaven is here!
follow me and I will make you fishers of men
Those words should echo - repent and follow, for I have plans for you - plans to give you a hope and a future, and to give others a hope and a future
I think it is because we know ourselves and we don’t know others
mercy implies compassion, compassion implies intention - we must intend to want better for others
Luke 13:
