STORY - Jesus and the wilderness.
For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.
When we make faith about what we GET OUT OF IT, we are making God follow us
We do this unintentionally when it comes to what we expect out of church, out of services. This whole thing, everything we say and do here, it all exists for two purposes - to praise God, and to make Him known. But our opinion of how successful or unsuccessful a church is depends all on how it makes US feel - the music wasn’t my taste, the message didn’t resonate with me, the coffee in the lobby wasn’t great, the youth pastor is just way too weird.
What we want out of God
Being led by God means God dictates the way, and it’s not always what we expect
The reason is - God’s goals here aren’t ours. His ways aren’t ours. He’s not here to build OUR kingdom, he’s here to build his. And we’re comfortable with that - until God’s kingdom stops profiting us. Then it starts getting a little uncomfortable. When expanding God’s kingdom means accepting a new direction, or a new focus, or a new method. When God’s kingdom starts encroaching our own, we’re given the test to see if we are still faithful.
“If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—
Note, this is ‘another advocate’ - another helper. This word here, ‘paracletos’, means helper, counselor, encourager, mediator, assistant.
So who was the first one? talks about how if we sin, we have an advocate standing before the father - Jesus Christ. They are interconnected in their mission and destination. We can’t look to Jesus as a person who calls us to a greater purpose, but look at the holy spirit as a way of making us feel good all the time. it doesn’t work like that.
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
The direction the holy spirit leads is to look more like Jesus
and Jesus God led into the wilderness. Jesus got led to rejection by his own people. Jesus got led to the cross.
We will expand more on this concept next week.
