Who wrote the largest segment of the New Testament?
Who wrote the largest segment of the New Testament?
Luke
Many have always viewed Paul as the author of most of the New Testament. If you account for his various letters, he has more individual works, but if you look at content supplied - Luke has written the greatest volume of the New Testament.
Many look at the writings of Luke in the Gospel of Luke and Acts (and some believe Hebrews), as Historical Narrative, but there is a thread of Charismatic Theology that runs through the book of Luke and Acts. In fact, both of these “books” were really epistles or letters to Theophilus - possibly a Roman Governor or appointee whom Luke was presenting the truth of Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit.
1 Many people have set out to write accounts about the events that have been fulfilled among us.
2 They used the eyewitness reports circulating among us from the early disciples.
3 Having carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I also have decided to write an accurate account for you, most honorable Theophilus,
4 so you can be certain of the truth of everything you were taught.

5 When Herod was king of Judea, there was a Jewish priest named Zechariah. He was a member of the priestly order of Abijah, and his wife, Elizabeth, was also from the priestly line of Aaron.

Luke 1.
1 In my first book I told you, Theophilus, about everything Jesus began to do and teach
2 until the day he was taken up to heaven after giving his chosen apostles further instructions through the Holy Spirit.
3 During the forty days after he suffered and died, he appeared to the apostles from time to time, and he proved to them in many ways that he was actually alive. And he talked to them about the Kingdom of God.

Actrs 1.1
Luke was writing to this audience of 1 an account of the work of Christ and how the Holy Spirit carried that work out after Christ ascended into heaven.
Who is Theophilus?
Some have suggested that Theophilus (which means “friend or lover of God” was a generic term for those reading the books of Luke… however with the reference to “most honorable” it is more likely it is a singular individual very possibly a Roman Governor. It has been suggested that Theophilus was the son of High Priest Annas - and the High Priest that actually gave Paul permission to persecute the Christians. His identity is not confirmed in Scripture or history.

References to Holy Spirit in Luke’s Works
There are 111 results in 53 verses to the reference of “The Holy Spirit” in the books of Luke and Acts.
It is important for us to understand the thread of teaching seen in the Books of Luke and Acts that point to our Pentecostal Distinctive in the Assemblies of God - the belief in not just the work of the Holy Spirit, but the:
Secondary Experience to Salvation
Empowerment of the Individual Believer
Baptism of the Holy Spirit (evidenced by Speaking in Tongues)
Luke talks of the Holy Spirit’s role before Christ in his presentation of John the Baptist being filled in the womb, leaping at hearing the sound of Mary’s voice, and Zacharias bringing forth John’s name. We also see the role of the Holy Spirit in Mary’s conception. (not physical as we understand the process of conception, but a spiritual experience)
15 for he will be great in the eyes of the Lord. He must never touch wine or other alcoholic drinks. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even before his birth.
41 At the sound of Mary’s greeting, Elizabeth’s child leaped within her, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
35 The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God.
67 Then his father, Zechariah, was filled with the Holy Spirit and gave this prophecy:
Luke
25 At that time there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon. He was righteous and devout and was eagerly waiting for the Messiah to come and rescue Israel. The Holy Spirit was upon him

Promise of the Holy Spirit
16 John answered their questions by saying, “I baptize you with water; but someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
22 and the Holy Spirit, in bodily form, descended on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said, “You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy.”
5 Then, teaching them more about prayer, he used this story: “Suppose you went to a friend’s house at midnight, wanting to borrow three loaves of bread. You say to him,
6 ‘A friend of mine has just arrived for a visit, and I have nothing for him to eat.’
7 And suppose he calls out from his bedroom, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is locked for the night, and my family and I are all in bed. I can’t help you.’
8 But I tell you this—though he won’t do it for friendship’s sake, if you keep knocking long enough, he will get up and give you whatever you need because of your shameless persistence.
9 “And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.
10 For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.
11 “You fathers—if your children ask for a fish, do you give them a snake instead?
12 Or if they ask for an egg, do you give them a scorpion? Of course not!
13 So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.”
13 So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.”
4 Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before.
5 John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

acts 1.
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Disciples (Jews) Receive the Holy Spirit
1 On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place.
2 Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting.
3 Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them.
4 And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

38 Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Believers in Samaria receive Holy Spirit...
31 After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness.
15 As soon as they arrived, they prayed for these new believers to receive the Holy Spirit.
16 The Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them, for they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
17 Then Peter and John laid their hands upon these believers, and they received the Holy Spirit.
Gentiles Receive Holy Spirit
38 And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
39 “And we apostles are witnesses of all he did throughout Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a cross,
40 but God raised him to life on the third day. Then God allowed him to appear,
41 not to the general public, but to us whom God had chosen in advance to be his witnesses. We were those who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.
42 And he ordered us to preach everywhere and to testify that Jesus is the one appointed by God to be the judge of all—the living and the dead.
43 He is the one all the prophets testified about, saying that everyone who believes in him will have their sins forgiven through his name.”
44 Even as Peter was saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who were listening to the message.
45 The Jewish believers who came with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles, too.
46 For they heard them speaking in other tongues and praising God. Then Peter asked,
47 “Can anyone object to their being baptized, now that they have received the Holy Spirit just as we did?”
Acts 2.
Proof of Holy Spirit as Presented by Apostles
15 “As I began to speak,” Peter continued, “the Holy Spirit fell on them, just as he fell on us at the beginning.
16 Then I thought of the Lord’s words when he said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’
17 And since God gave these Gentiles the same gift he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to stand in God’s way?”
18 When the others heard this, they stopped objecting and began praising God. They said, “We can see that God has also given the Gentiles the privilege of repenting of their sins and receiving eternal life.”
15 “As I began to speak,” Peter continued, “the Holy Spirit fell on them, just as he fell on us at the beginning.

18 When the others heard this, they stopped objecting and began praising God. They said, “We can see that God has also given the Gentiles the privilege of repenting of their sins and receiving eternal life.”
19 Meanwhile, the believers who had been scattered during the persecution after Stephen’s death traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch of Syria. They preached the word of God, but only to Jews.
20 However, some of the believers who went to Antioch from Cyprus and Cyrene began preaching to the Gentiles about the Lord Jesus.
21 The power of the Lord was with them, and a large number of these Gentiles believed and turned to the Lord.
22 When the church at Jerusalem heard what had happened, they sent Barnabas to Antioch.
23 When he arrived and saw this evidence of God’s blessing, he was filled with joy, and he encouraged the believers to stay true to the Lord.
24 Barnabas was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and strong in faith. And many people were brought to the Lord.
acts 11.
8 God knows people’s hearts, and he confirmed that he accepts Gentiles by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as he did to us.
Others Receive the Holy Spirit
Acts 19.26
2 “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” he asked them. “No,” they replied, “we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
3 “Then what baptism did you experience?” he asked. And they replied, “The baptism of John.”
4 Paul said, “John’s baptism called for repentance from sin. But John himself told the people to believe in the one who would come later, meaning Jesus.”
5 As soon as they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 Then when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in other tongues and prophesied.
If you look at the THREAD running through Luke’s writing he connects the dots from the start of Jesus ministry to the ascension of Christ and shows the transition of the POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT in the believer’s life to do the WORK OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD in spreading the Gospel of Christ until Jesus returns!
Please note:
Luke focuses on the BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Some also call this the GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT --- not to be confused with the gifts of the HOLY SPIRIT.
The Gift of the Holy Spirit proceeds from CHRIST to the INDIVIDUAL BELIEVER!
The Gift of the Holy Spirit is given to EMPOWER the individual believer to
a. be a witness
b. pray
c. overcome sin
The Gift of the Holy Spirit or Baptism in the Holy Spirit is initially evidenced by Speaking in other Tongues...
not to be confused with the GIFT OF TONGUES
not to be required for salvation
not to be a pre-requisite for fruit of the Spirit to be manifested in one’s life
However, if more of the Holy Spirit is present due to the overflowing power of the Spirit, than these other things are more apt to take place.
TONGUES IS NOT THE GIFT … the HOLY SPIRIT is the Gift!
Secondary Experience
Secondary Experience
Baptized in Holy Spirit and Fire is a powerful suggestion that after the repentance of sin and putting our faith in Christ (when we identify with the church in baptism in water) there is a secondary experience.
Let’s look at the chain of experience leading up to the day of Pentecost when the Spirit was given.
19 That Sunday evening the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them! “Peace be with you,” he said.
20 As he spoke, he showed them the wounds in his hands and his side. They were filled with joy when they saw the Lord!
21 Again he said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.”
22 Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven. If you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”
John
This is truly a moment where Jesus imparts the HOLY SPIRIT UPON HIS BELIEVERS...
Is this the same experience as described in the BOOK OF ACTS? NO it isn’t.
This is an impartation like everyone who believes receives — a measure of the Holy Spirit.
13 And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago.
14 The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify him.
We all have a deposit of the Holy Spirit given to us in our lives...
Like a bank account that is opened with $20 or $100, or even $1000. it is a starting place to grow! It keeps the account opened.
But there is a greater measure promised...
Let’s return to our Charismatic Theologian - Luke...
PROMISE OF BAPTISM!
What does baptism mean --- IMMERSION
To be immersed with the Holy Spirit - to be overflowing.
John records the words of Christ regarding this, because the overflowing comes from within the believer as more of the Spirit is given...
37 On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me!
38 Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’ ”
39 (When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.)
Here is an experience that Jesus spoke of that would be
AFTER HIS ASCENSION!!!!
The disciples believed and received a measure of the HOLY SPIRIT BEFORE HIS ASCENSION --- then they prayed and sought the LORD for a secondary experience — the BAPTISM or IMMERSION in the SPIRIT - gift from Jesus to them.
Baptism in the Spirit is not simultaneous with salvation - it can happen, but is not required for salvation as some Pentecostal groups proclaim, likewise it is not there just because one received the Spirit as a deposit as non-Pentecostals proclaim.
Let’s talk about this immersion… because the Baptism is when the Spirit is overflowing our lives from the innermost parts of our being...
That means in a spiritual sense it is less of us and more of HIM flowing out of our lives.
ILLUSTRATION WITH PITCHER OF WATER AND CUP
ILLUSTRATION WITH PITCHER OF WATER AND CUP
We can use up the Holy Spirit - like water evaporates under heat, and gets consumed by need - we have to be tapping into that source daily.
-------------------------
Doesn’t it make sense that God would want us to have a point of identifying that we had received the Spirit???
God chose to show us an initial evidence that this had occurred - (keep in mind people can be really full of the Spirit without this evidence, but this evidence shows it has overflowed their lives)
TONGUES
TONGUES
The all controversial subject.
I believe we have demonstrated already in the thread from Luke the promise, and outpouring of the Holy Spirit and that when Jews, Samaritans, and Gentiles received they demonstrated just as they did on the day of Pentecost - speaking in tongues!
The proof they gave to the Council of Jerusalem to receive Gentiles into the family of Christ was that they had received just like they did on that day — the common thread there was TONGUES.
Think of a book analogy where it describes a Holstein cow. It is white with brown spots or brown with white spots. Small horns, good for milk.
Every time the book refers to the Holstein cow does it have to describe its appearance again? No, it was established. Perhaps when a situation varies the author might give the description again to distinguish it again --- like the Jews, Samaritans, Gentiles and then the Bereans...
spoke in tongues...
WHY?
Why would God choose such a manifestation.
8 but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison.
James
I think we all understand how powerful the tongue and language can be - to hurt, encourage, express love, divide, etc.
Language has been the number one factor in dividing culture in the world. In fact, various cultures grow around language and expression.
This was the intent when man sought to UNITE AGAINST GOD at BABEL!
1 At one time all the people of the world spoke the same language and used the same words.
2 As the people migrated to the east, they found a plain in the land of Babylonia and settled there.
3 They began saying to each other, “Let’s make bricks and harden them with fire.” (In this region bricks were used instead of stone, and tar was used for mortar.)
4 Then they said, “Come, let’s build a great city for ourselves with a tower that reaches into the sky. This will make us famous and keep us from being scattered all over the world.”
5 But the Lord came down to look at the city and the tower the people were building.
6 “Look!” he said. “The people are united, and they all speak the same language. After this, nothing they set out to do will be impossible for them!
7 Come, let’s go down and confuse the people with different languages. Then they won’t be able to understand each other.”
8 In that way, the Lord scattered them all over the world, and they stopped building the city.
After the flood man sought in unity to RISE TO THE HEAVENS and unite even against God. SO God (picture of Trinity here) divided their language and dispersed them throughout the world.
We even see today how man has exalted towers and mighty cities and attempted to unite in spite of language to create ONE WORLD WITHOUT GOD! However, language and understanding that has created different culture still keeps the world from truly uniting as one. It is a theme of the tribulation where the earth seeks to come together as one under the antichrist uniting against God...
However, a couple thousand years ago, God allowed LANGUAGE TO UNITE THE CHURCH - the body of CHRIST because when man was yielded to God’s authority and will in His life, language He did not understand would be a unifying factor.
On the day of Pentecost many heard the WORKS OF GOD in their own language and believed upon the Lord.
These testimonies still go on today...
- Hebrew being spoken in a prayer meeting where someone walked in and hear them praying over their family...
- Indian student in Chi Alpha who heard God speak to him in a name only his family called him
Indian student in Chi Alpha who heard God speak to him in a name only his family called him
Regardless if a tongue is earthly or heavenly as Paul mentions, it is utterance that symbolizes and demonstrates the Spirit of God flowing through an individual.
Now, think of it for a minute — no man can tame the tongue, God divided language, what a perfect picture of God reuniting those in surrender to Him and demonstrating our tongue has been controlled by the Master of all things!!!
NEW YORK TIMES ARTICLE ON TONGUES --- SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH BY PENNSYLVANIA UNIVERSITY...
A Neuroscientific Look at Speaking in Tongues
A Neuroscientific Look at Speaking in Tongues

The passionate, sometimes rhythmic, language-like patter that pours forth from religious people who “speak in tongues” reflects a state of mental possession, many of them say. Now they have some neuroscience to back them up.
The passionate, sometimes rhythmic, language-like patter that pours forth from religious people who “speak in tongues” reflects a state of mental possession, many of them say. Now they have some neuroscience to back them up.
Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania took brain images of five women while they spoke in tongues and found that their frontal lobes — the thinking, willful part of the brain through which people control what they do — were relatively quiet, as were the language centers. The regions involved in maintaining self-consciousness were active. The women were not in blind trances, and it was unclear which region was driving the behavior.
The images, appearing in the current issue of the journal Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging, pinpoint the most active areas of the brain. The images are the first of their kind taken during this spoken religious practice, which has roots in the Old and New Testaments and in Pentecostal churches established in the early 1900s. The women in the study were healthy, active churchgoers.
“The amazing thing was how the images supported people’s interpretation of what was happening,” said Dr. Andrew B. Newberg, leader of the study team, which included Donna Morgan, Nancy Wintering and Mark Waldman. “The way they describe it, and what they believe, is that God is talking through them,” he said.
Dr. Newberg is also a co-author of “Why We Believe What We Believe.”
In the study, the researchers used imaging techniques to track changes in blood flow in each woman’s brain in two conditions, once as she sang a gospel song and again while speaking in tongues. By comparing the patterns created by these two emotional, devotional activities, the researchers could pinpoint blood-flow peaks and valleys unique to speaking in tongues.
Ms. Morgan, a co-author of the study, was also a research subject. She is a born-again Christian who says she considers the ability to speak in tongues a gift. “You’re aware of your surroundings,” she said. “You’re not really out of control. But you have no control over what’s happening. You’re just flowing. You’re in a realm of peace and comfort, and it’s a fantastic feeling.”

Contrary to what may be a common perception, studies suggest that people who speak in tongues rarely suffer from mental problems. A recent study of nearly 1,000 evangelical Christians in England found that those who engaged in the practice were more emotionally stable than those who did not. Researchers have identified at least two forms of the practice, one ecstatic and frenzied, the other subdued and nearly silent.

The new findings contrasted sharply with images taken of other spiritually inspired mental states like meditation, which is often a highly focused mental exercise, activating the frontal lobes.
The scans also showed a dip in the activity of a region called the left caudate. “The findings from the frontal lobes are very clear, and make sense, but the caudate is usually active when you have positive affect, pleasure, positive emotions,” said Dr. James A. Coan, a psychologist at the University of Virginia. “So it’s not so clear what that finding says” about speaking in tongues.
The caudate area is also involved in motor and emotional control, Dr. Newberg said, so it may be that practitioners, while mindful of their circumstances, nonetheless cede some control over their bodies and emotions.
Correction: Nov. 11, 2006
An article in Science Times on Tuesday about brain images of people speaking in tongues misstated the origins of the practice in America. It is thought to have begun in Pentecostal churches established in the early 1900s, not in charismatic churches. The charismatic movement began decades later.

WHY is the BAPTISM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT GIVEN?
WHY is the BAPTISM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT GIVEN?
Power to Witness
Power to Pray
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Contrast the difference between Peter the night of Christ trial — he curses three separate occasions denying Christ for fear of what will happen...
7 Also, people outside the church must speak well of him so that he will not be disgraced and fall into the devil’s trap.
7 (Such women are forever following new teachings, but they are never able to understand the truth.)
7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
How different it is on the Day of Pentecost - while being mocked and ridiculed for the glossolalia at hand - Peter stands up and proclaims Christ!!!!
2. Power to Pray
26 And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.
27 And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.
28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.
3. Power to Overcome Sin
The Holy Spirit’s job is to convict of sin and to advocate - or help us to remember what Christ has taught us...
26 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.
20 But you, dear friends, must build each other up in your most holy faith, pray in the power of the Holy Spirit,
21 and await the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will bring you eternal life. In this way, you will keep yourselves safe in God’s love.
22 And you must show mercy to those whose faith is wavering.
23 Rescue others by snatching them from the flames of judgment. Show mercy to still others, but do so with great caution, hating the sins that contaminate their lives.
5 “But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and not one of you is asking where I am going.
6 Instead, you grieve because of what I’ve told you.
7 But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you.
8 And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.
9 The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me.
10 Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more.
11 Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged.
12 “There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now.
John 16.5-
It is the role of the Spirit to convict of sin and the power and prayer of the Spirit to show us what actions of ours transgresses what Christ taught us — HE HELPS US to OVERCOME THIS WORLD!
john 16:

CONCLUSION
CONCLUSION
Luke taught us what we truly know about the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.
Allowing the POWER of the HOLY SPIRIT to transform our lives - giving us
power to witness, pray and overcome sin - so after Christ left this earth, the individual could experience the same empowerment that Christ had while He walked on this earth.
It is a secondary experience to salvation - where we repent and come to faith in Christ Though a measure of the Spirit is given at that time, there is much more the Spirit wants to do in the life of the believer.
We know we have experienced this Baptism when we have spoken in other languages - the gift is not the other language, but the overflowing immersive presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. something we should seek after daily!
