“You got a Friend”
(Prop) It’s important to understand this life a battlefield, and we do have an enemy, but with God’s word leading us, and good friends beside us, and the holy spirit in us, there’s nothing that we can’t do…as we work through this chapter…were see how important David’s would be to him...
A friend is been defined as “one who comes in, when the whole world has gone out.”
Intro: We’re continuing in our study of 2 Samuel…and over the few chapters we’ve seen David at a low in his life
Personally, he was still flooded in guilt from his adultery/murder.Domestically, his family was devastated by death, rape, revenge & rebellion.Politically, he was losing control of his kingdom as his ambitious son Absalom maneuvered himself into power.
Intro:Over the last few chapters we’ve seen David's world begin to unravel
Personally, he was still flooded in guilt from his adultery/murder
Domestically, his family was devastated by death, rape, revenge & rebellion

Politically, he was losing control of his kingdom as his ambitious son Absalom maneuvered himself into power
And He’s gonna seen some friends...
Thats what we’re gonna see in this chapter
David’s enemies v.1-12
David’s Escape v.13-29
David’s friends v.13-37
David’s Exile v. 30-37

David’s enemies v.1-12

Absalom’s Plan v.1-12
David’s had his fair share of enemies, Goliath, Saul, but nothing would be worse then the Son you love rising up against you to destroy you

Absalom

Absalom

The Rebel son of David’s had an eye for the kingdom and he was on a mission to win the heart of people…how would he do that? lets find out…who had just been foolishly allowed back into the city after he had killed his brother...
2 Samuel 14:33 ESV
Then Joab went to the king and told him, and he summoned Absalom. So he came to the king and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king, and the king kissed Absalom.
2 Samuel 14:31 ESV
Then Joab arose and went to Absalom at his house and said to him, “Why have your servants set my field on fire?”
So what we see here is that even though Absalom was gonna conspire to over throw David’s thrown…He was willing to fake obedience…
And where gonna see him woe the people away from David....

Absalom’s plan

We’re gonna see Absalom appeal to the lowest parts of the people’s nature

He appealed to their “shallow” nature

He appeals to the

He Appealed to their of “Shallow” Nature

2 Samuel 15:1 ESV
After this Absalom got himself a chariot and horses, and fifty men to run before him.
2 sam 15:1
So false humility closed the last chapter, and self promotion begins the next…because understand this chariot isn’t for speed…this is for show and these 50 men weren’t for protection they were hype
Whats happening here? Absalom knew that people are shallow and will base a majority of opinion off of looks...
App: Still like this today

He appealed to thier “self centered” nature

2 Samuel 15:2–4 ESV
And Absalom used to rise early and stand beside the way of the gate. And when any man had a dispute to come before the king for judgment, Absalom would call to him and say, “From what city are you?” And when he said, “Your servant is of such and such a tribe in Israel,” Absalom would say to him, “See, your claims are good and right, but there is no man designated by the king to hear you.” Then Absalom would say, “Oh that I were judge in the land! Then every man with a dispute or cause might come to me, and I would give him justice.”
2 samuel 15:2-
So Absalom who had commited himself to this conspiracy would rise early and head to the Gate…why the gate? because that was the civic center of the town. it was the place they would gather to strategize against an enemy and the courthouse…and he would go down there pull aside every person with a complaint…and say “If I were elected…I would give you justice”
For most people in Court…Justice for them…Is winning - It doesn’t matter about the process…Its about “Whats the quickest” “Whats the best result for me”
This is why he’s here…he could present himself as the only one who was interested personally in them
App: And appealing to people’s sense of self-interest is a powerful thing
Much disfunction continues because of people who only say “Whats in this for me?” instead of “what the best for everyone”
Be carful of people , who only try to pander to your sense of self-interest…Because there will be times where whats best for you, is not whats best for the whole
Philippians 2:3 ESV
3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.

He appealed to their need to feel “important”

2 Samuel 15:4–6 ESV
Then Absalom would say, “Oh that I were judge in the land! Then every man with a dispute or cause might come to me, and I would give him justice.” And whenever a man came near to pay homage to him, he would put out his hand and take hold of him and kiss him. Thus Absalom did to all of Israel who came to the king for judgment. So Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.
Here’s Absalom standing outside the courthouse in his chariot, with his men, promising justice for all comers, but not just that, he’s making an intentional effort to make people feel like their important…he’s essentally taking photo’s, shaking hands, and kissing babies…why is he doing that? because everyone likes to feel important
Here’s what we see here overall - Absalom stole the hearts of the people by banking on the fact that they would care more whats good for themselves as opposed to whats good for their nation
Just because they make you feel important, doesn’t mean their for you…let actions and time, be the judge of that
App: Do you know that Satan will still try and use these tactics today…If he can get you saying things like “What can I get out of this? instead of “whats best for the whole” He’s gonna stifle God’s work
look what happens next...
2 Samuel 15:7–11 ESV
And at the end of four years Absalom said to the king, “Please let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed to the Lord, in Hebron. For your servant vowed a vow while I lived at Geshur in Aram, saying, ‘If the Lord will indeed bring me back to Jerusalem, then I will offer worship to the Lord.’ ” The king said to him, “Go in peace.” So he arose and went to Hebron. But Absalom sent secret messengers throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then say, ‘Absalom is king at Hebron!’ ” With Absalom went two hundred men from Jerusalem who were invited guests, and they went in their innocence and knew nothing.
2 Samuel 15:7–9 ESV
And at the end of four years Absalom said to the king, “Please let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed to the Lord, in Hebron. For your servant vowed a vow while I lived at Geshur in Aram, saying, ‘If the Lord will indeed bring me back to Jerusalem, then I will offer worship to the Lord.’ ” The king said to him, “Go in peace.” So he arose and went to Hebron.
2 sam 15:7
2 things here…notice the level of deception that Absalom has reached…He’s planning an overthrow of the king…yet he’s still bowing to the king, and offering up sacrifices to the Lord
App: There’s a lot of people like this today - There’s a bomb going off inside of you…but no one would no it. because you just play the game so well...
1 Corinthians 10:12 ESV
Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.
This word “take heed” means to “take care” of yourself…
Illustration: I think how we take care of our bodies, or our bank accounts, and our hobbies…but not so much when it comes to our hearts...
Absalom, The philistines, even Judas, tell us that you be in the midst of God’s work and still be off…so take heed
2 Sam 15:10-
2 Samuel 15:10–11 ESV
But Absalom sent secret messengers throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then say, ‘Absalom is king at Hebron!’ ” With Absalom went two hundred men from Jerusalem who were invited guests, and they went in their innocence and knew nothing.
Whats the deal with these 200 hundred men who were innocent…what was Absalom trying accomplish by bringing with him? - Absalom wisely knew that he needed others to endorse – or at least to appear to endorse – his government. He counted on these two hundred men who were not against David to at least be silent and therefore give the impression that they were for Absalom.
I saw this quote by David Guzik about this and it was great
When the innocent and unknowing are among the divisive, their silence is always received as agreement.
2 Samuel 15:12 ESV
And while Absalom was offering the sacrifices, he sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counselor, from his city Giloh. And the conspiracy grew strong, and the people with Absalom kept increasing.
2 Sam 15:
And here we see the other enemy of David...

Ahithophel

He was once one of David’s most trusted advisors, and according to 2 Samuel 16:32 “His words were like the words of God” so why was Ahithophel so quick betray David and align himself with Absalom? Because his granddaughter was Bathsheba…David commited Adultery with his grand daughter, and then orchestrated the death of her Husband Uriah in the field of Battle...
This reminds us of the collateral damage of Sin - David in his moment of passion wasn’t thinking about the wide spread longterm effects of his sin…but he should have been…because now one of his greatest advisor has turned against him
This also reminds us of the destructive power of bitterness - David was guilty was for what he did but this move would turn Ahitophel into an enemy of God’s king…essentally putting him on the wrong side of the battle
David’s friends v.13-37
So the trap has been baited and now Absalom is about to make his move, start the overthrow of David’s throne…and this is where some who were were willing to stay loyal to David even though his kingdom was falling apart at this moment...

David’s friends v.13-37

David had “Loyal” friends

2 SAM 15:
2 Samuel 15:13–14 ESV
And a messenger came to David, saying, “The hearts of the men of Israel have gone after Absalom.” Then David said to all his servants who were with him at Jerusalem, “Arise, and let us flee, or else there will be no escape for us from Absalom. Go quickly, lest he overtake us quickly and bring down ruin on us and strike the city with the edge of the sword.”
2 Samuel 15:13–15 ESV
13 And a messenger came to David, saying, “The hearts of the men of Israel have gone after Absalom.” 14 Then David said to all his servants who were with him at Jerusalem, “Arise, and let us flee, or else there will be no escape for us from Absalom. Go quickly, lest he overtake us quickly and bring down ruin on us and strike the city with the edge of the sword.” 15 And the king’s servants said to the king, “Behold, your servants are ready to do whatever my lord the king decides.”
2 SAM 15:13-
So here the message confirmed the fact that Absalom had stolen the hearts of the people but notice where’s David’s concern lies?…And you get a sense that David has always known what Absalom was capable of…
So here the message confirmed the fact that Absalom had stolen the hearts of the people but notice where’s David’s concern lies?....David’s concern lies with the well being of the city
So here the message confirmed the fact that Absalom had stolen the hearts of the people but notice where’s David’s concern lies?....David’s concern lies with the well being of the city

But Notice David’s showing himself to be a King who cares about his People - I think about the contrast between Him and Absalom, Absalom faked concern for the people to get what he wanted, But David showed concern for his people in spite of the fact that his life was in Danger
David’s showing himself to King who cares about his People - I think about the contrast between Him and Absalom, Absalom faked concern for the people to get what he wanted, But David showed concern for his people in spite of the fact that his life was in Danger
I think this shows us 2 things:
David Has always known what his son absalom was capable of - In other words, he knew he was a problem but he just chose to ignore it in the hope that it would go away on It’s own...
App: You can’t ignore your problems and hope they go away…they won’t you have to address them head on
David’s showing himself to King who cares about his People - I think about the contrast between Him and Absalom, Absalom faked concern for the people to get what he wanted, But David showed concern for his people in spite of the fact that his life was in Danger
App: David though an imperfect example of this, shows us how a Good leader leads…not out of selfish agenda, but out of love and genuine concern for the people
15 And the king’s servants said to the king, “Behold, your servants are ready to do whatever my lord the king decides - Think about this, If they were merely servants of David as soon as the power switched over to Absalom they would have gone with him…but they “David, whatever you want to do....we’ll do”
Thats loyalty
App: May we be like this with Jesus..
“We must determine that wherever Jesus is, we will be also. He lives in the heavenlies, so will we be. He is with His church, so will we be. He is busy in His work, so will we be. He is with children, so will we be”
Adversity is always the test of Loyalty
Adversity is always the test of Loyalty
App: Praise the Lord for friends like this, who are willing to stick by you not just when things are great, but when are down...
So remember the quote A friend has been aptly defined as “one who comes in, when the whole world has gone out.” now we get to see David true friends…and we’ll notice theres 4 types of friends we see here...

David had “Brave” friends

David had “Warrior” friends

David had “Warrior” friends
2 Samuel 15:15–21 ESV
15 And the king’s servants said to the king, “Behold, your servants are ready to do whatever my lord the king decides.” 16 So the king went out, and all his household after him. And the king left ten concubines to keep the house. 17 And the king went out, and all the people after him. And they halted at the last house. 18 And all his servants passed by him, and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the six hundred Gittites who had followed him from Gath, passed on before the king. 19 Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite, “Why do you also go with us? Go back and stay with the king, for you are a foreigner and also an exile from your home. 20 You came only yesterday, and shall I today make you wander about with us, since I go I know not where? Go back and take your brothers with you, and may the Lord show steadfast love and faithfulness to you.” 21 But Ittai answered the king, “As the Lord lives, and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king shall be, whether for death or for life, there also will your servant be.”
2 sam 15:15-
2 sam 15:16-20
2 Samuel 15:16–21 ESV

This is such a beautiful passage, because what we see at the heart of this portion is Loyalty…we have 3 groups of warriors Cherethites, Pelethites
This is such a beautiful passage, because what we see at the heart of this portion is Loyalty…we have 3 groups of warriors Cherethites, Pelethites
This is such a beautiful passage, because what we see at the heart of this portion is Loyalty…we have 3 groups of warriors Cherethites, Pelethites, Gittites
Couple of things about these warriors
Couple of things about these warriors
They were all foreigners - The were all associated of the philistines
In spite of their foreign decent they were all fiercely Loyal to the king
Look at what David said to them - 19 Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite, “Why do you also go with us? Go back and stay with the king - Notice how David has already given into the fact the Absalom is most likely gonna take the kingdom....
But look at what Ittai their leader says - 21 But Ittai answered the king, “As the Lord lives, and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king shall be, whether for death or for life, there also will your servant be.”
This feels a lot like Ruth and Naomi
So what we have in Absalom who is David’s son grew up in the kingdom…and he’s showing himself to be faithless, and we have these guys who are foreigners are showing themselves to incredible faithful to the king
App: Blood ties don’t alway guarantee loyalty
.These guys were like David’s security team, they come from a nation of fighters

App: In that same way, In the this life and in this battle…you are gonna need some “Ites” or in other words…Your gonna need some fighters
Friends who are trained in the art of Spiritual Warfare
Friends who arn’t afraid to fight for you when times get rough
Friends who aren’t afraid to fight against you when your wrong and need correction
Look what happens next...

David had some “Priests”

David
2 Samuel 15:22–27 ESV
22 And David said to Ittai, “Go then, pass on.” So Ittai the Gittite passed on with all his men and all the little ones who were with him. 23 And all the land wept aloud as all the people passed by, and the king crossed the brook Kidron, and all the people passed on toward the wilderness. 24 And Abiathar came up, and behold, Zadok came also with all the Levites, bearing the ark of the covenant of God. And they set down the ark of God until the people had all passed out of the city. 25 Then the king said to Zadok, “Carry the ark of God back into the city. If I find favor in the eyes of the Lord, he will bring me back and let me see both it and his dwelling place. 26 But if he says, ‘I have no pleasure in you,’ behold, here I am, let him do to me what seems good to him.” 27 The king also said to Zadok the priest, “Are you not a seer? Go back to the city in peace, with your two sons, Ahimaaz your son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar.
2 sam 15:22
2 Samuel 15:22–23 ESV
22 And David said to Ittai, “Go then, pass on.” So Ittai the Gittite passed on with all his men and all the little ones who were with him. 23 And all the land wept aloud as all the people passed by, and the king crossed the brook Kidron, and all the people passed on toward the wilderness.
2 sam 15:22
So here we have a heart breaking scene of David abandoning his kingdom heading across the brook Kedron into the wilderness...
David’s sin didn’t just effect him, but it effected his whole people
This us takes us back to David the young man, fleeing into the wilderness for season of testing and breaking…and now it’s happening again
App: What odes this tells us about the wilderness? it’s not just a one time thing…Sometimes it’s God’s doing, sometimes it’s your doing…but the wilderness will never have the final say…you know why? because there would be a greater king, who face a greater exile, and cross this same brook Kedron who would come and break power of sin and death over our lives so that the wilderness would not be the end of us
Now we’re introduced to another set of Davids friend

David had “Priestly” friends

1 Samuel 15:24–29 ESV
24 Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice. 25 Now therefore, please pardon my sin and return with me that I may bow before the Lord.” 26 And Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you. For you have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you from being king over Israel.” 27 As Samuel turned to go away, Saul seized the skirt of his robe, and it tore. 28 And Samuel said to him, “The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you. 29 And also the Glory of Israel will not lie or have regret, for he is not a man, that he should have regret.”
2 Samuel 15:24–29 ESV
28 See, I will wait at the fords of the wilderness until word comes from you to inform me.” 29 So Zadok and Abiathar carried the ark of God back to Jerusalem, and they remained there.
2 sam :15
1 SAM 15:24
Notice David has 2 men named Zadok and Abiathar, and come bringing the Ark of the Covenant out to where David is, this was a powerful symbolic gesture, they were essentially, David’s still God’s guy, the kingdom was promised to Him, and even-though Absalom won the heart of the people, he hadn’t won God’s approval…But i do like David’s humility here…He says the priest...”slow your roll, Perhaps God’s not with me…perhaps i’m in the wrong…It’s in his hands.
But notice, that David had the Loyalty of the Priests...
Priests or the Levites had a specific role, and that to be representatives of the people before God…they handled the things of God like Ark of the Covenant, and the Tabernacle…they would offer up the sacrifices unto the Lord on behalf of the people
Notice David has 2 men named Zadok and Abiathar
Zadok was the great grandson of Eli (The man who raised up Samuel)
Zadok was the great grandson of Eli (The man who raised up Samuel)
Abiathar was the lone survivor from the priestly city of Nob, whom David had taken in
App: In that same way in this battle called life, you gonna need some fighters, but your also gonna need some priests
App: In that same way in this battle called life, you gonna need some fighters, but your also gonna need some priests
Someone who’s primary concern is “how does this thing thats happening pertain to your relationship with the Lord”
Someone who cares more about the vertical then the Horizontal
Someone who says thing’s like “Have we even prayed about this thing?”
In this life, it’s easy to get pragmatic....and lose sight of the God…We need people who are gonna bring us back
2 Samuel 15:30–31 ESV
30 But David went up the ascent of the Mount of Olives, weeping as he went, barefoot and with his head covered. And all the people who were with him covered their heads, and they went up, weeping as they went. 31 And it was told David, “Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.” And David said, “O Lord, please turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.”
2 sam 15:30
There some thing that makes me so grateful about passages like this…because i feel like this was an ugly statement by David....considering he turned Ahitophel…but yet he’s willing to be ugly be before the Lord…and Let the Lord deal with that Statement...
Psalm 51:6 ESV
6 Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.
If you’ve got something ugly to say, before you say it to anyone else....say it to the Lord

David had “underated” friends

2 Samuel 15:32–36 ESV
32 While David was coming to the summit, where God was worshiped, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat torn and dirt on his head. 33 David said to him, “If you go on with me, you will be a burden to me. 34 But if you return to the city and say to Absalom, ‘I will be your servant, O king; as I have been your father’s servant in time past, so now I will be your servant,’ then you will defeat for me the counsel of Ahithophel. 35 Are not Zadok and Abiathar the priests with you there? So whatever you hear from the king’s house, tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests. 36 Behold, their two sons are with them there, Ahimaaz, Zadok’s son, and Jonathan, Abiathar’s son, and by them you shall send to me everything you hear.”
