Slave or Free?

What Jesus Says of Himself

John 6:35 ESV
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.
John 6:44 ESV
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.
John 7:37–38 ESV
On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ ”
John 8:12 ESV
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
John 8:23 ESV
He said to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.

Becoming a Disciple

John 8:30–32 ESV
As he was saying these things, many believed in him. So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Becoming a Disciple

Abide in the word

Learn the truth

Discover freedom

Who You Calling Slave?

John 8:33 ESV
They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”

Who You Calling Slave?

These Jews believed in Him

“Slave” has a bad vibe to it

Why do we need freedom?

You Don’t Know?

John 8:34 ESV
Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.

You Don’t Know?

You are what you do:

Psalm 14:3
Everyone has turned away. Together they have
become rotten to the core. No one,
not even one person, does good things.

Sinners have turned from God

Become “rotten to the core”

Don’t even know how to do right

Slaves Aren’t Sons

John 8:35 ESV
The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever.

Slaves Aren’t Sons

Jesus proclaims emancipation

Only His truth can set us free

His freedom is “Amen!”

Set Free means

Free to be God’s children

Free to do what is right

The Status Quo is Slavery

John 8:37–38 ESV
I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”

The Status Quo is Slavery

Some like slavery more than truth

We’ve been captured

Beaten down

Enslaved

Forced to obey

Don’t Rest on Heritage

John 8:39–40 ESV
They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did.

Don't Rest On Heritage

Behaviors prove whose we are

Truth doesn’t settle in a trapped mind

We’ve been so abused by sin

We only know sin’s mastery of us

A slave-master blocks truth

The Truth of God Leads Us to Accept His Son

Finally find release from sin’s slavery

Finally learn to follow God’s love

Finally learn to heed God’s word

Slave or Free?

What we practice becomes our master

Jesus is a different kind of master

To be freed from sin we have to admit we are held captive by it

Psalm 51:1–2 ESV
Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!
