1 So if you have been raised with the Messiah, seek what is above, where the Messiah is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on what is above, not on what is on the earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with the Messiah in God. 4 When the Messiah, who is your life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.
5 Therefore, put to death what belongs to your worldly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desire, and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, God’s wrath comes on the disobedient, 7 and you once walked in these things when you were living in them. 8 But now you must also put away all the following: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and filthy language from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self. You are being renewed in knowledge according to the image of your Creator. 11 In Christ there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all.
12 Therefore, God’s chosen ones, holy and loved, put on heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, 13 accepting one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a complaint against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must also forgive. 14 Above all, put on love—the perfect bond of unity. 15 And let the peace of the Messiah, to which you were also called in one body, control your hearts. Be thankful.

ESV= LET THE PEACE RULE
through 15
“let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.”
Definition of Peace: Freedom From Disturbance, Tranquility.
Supernaturally changed heart versus a morally restrained heart.
One aspect of a supernatural a changed heart is seen here in Colossians. It is the aspect of peace.
We see all kinds of evidence of what is supernaturally changed heart looks like in the scripture. For instance the fruit of the Spirit. Joy and peace are often listed together.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith,
So what do you want? Moral restraint or Supernatural Shift?
PEACE: How to get it, and how to cultivate it
PEACE: How to get it, and how to cultivate it
Letting the Peace of God “guard“ or “rule“ your heart.
7 And the peace of God, which surpasses every thought, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
11 I don’t say this out of need, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.
HOW!?!?! HE HAS THAT PEACE...
Philippians “I have learned the secret of peace that passes all understanding.”-Paul the apostle.
Illustration from pride and prejudice
After Jane becomes engaged to Bingley, she says she wishes Elizabeth could be as happy as she is. Elizabeth replies,
"If you were to give me forty such men, I never could be so happy as you. Till I have your disposition, your goodness, I never can have your happiness."–Lizzie Bennett
Happiness is not a matter of circumstances. It’s a matter of the disposition of your heart.
It goes completely against our distinct instincts. When our peace is interrupted or our circumstances shift we are taken out with it. When we experience a lack of peace it is usually been triggered by some shift in our circumstances. Something happened that disrupted our lives and we lose it over it. And we blame that circumstance as the CAUSE of our loss of peace.
When we experience a lack of peace it is usually been triggered by some shift in our circumstances. Something happened that disrupted our lives and we lose it over it.
And we blame that circumstance as the CAUSE of our loss of peace.
That may be the occasion of a loss of peace but the cause is something very different. It’s what Lizzie is talking about here. It’s deep in your heart.
ITS SOMETHING THAT IS IN YOU!!!
3 Things about Peace:
1. Peace is a LIVING power that comes into your life.
1. Peace is a LIVING power that comes into your life.
Guard your hearts equals to march around your heart like a rampart. All your heart is like a referee. It’s the ancient word for umpire.
2. Peace RULES from within.
2. Peace RULES from within.
27 “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Your heart must not be troubled or fearful.
jn 15 27Jesus here is acknowledging there is a worldly kind of peace, not a supernatural peace but one that comes and goes with circumstances.
27 You also will testify, because you have been with Me from the beginning.
I DO NOT give you peace as the world gives
Jesus here is acknowledging there is a worldly kind of peace, not a supernatural peace but one that comes and goes with circumstances.
Jesus here is acknowledging there is a worldly kind of peace, not a supernatural peace but one that comes and goes with circumstances.
Jesus here is acknowledging there is a worldly kind of peace, not a supernatural peace but one that comes and goes with circumstances.
Jesus here is acknowledging there is a worldly kind of peace, NOT a supernatural peace but one that comes and goes with circumstances.
If you’ve ever really had a moment where you think wow I’m at peace right now and then it’s gone in an instant when something happens that’s peace like the world gives. It’s not something that runs deeper inside. We all experience it.
Illustration: take for example a mirror. It only has the capacity to be bright when light is introduced. If there is no light it’s no longer visible. It has no power of illumination of its own...
The natural heart is much like a mirror. It can only reflect it circumstances
The natural heart is much like a mirror. It can only reflect it circumstances But it does not have its own Peace. It’s a Peace of the world can give you but then when the circumstances change it’s gone.
But it does not have its own Peace. It’s a Peace of the world can give you but then when the circumstances change it’s gone.
LET THE PEACE OF CHRST RULE......!
It has authority despite the circumstances. It’s your peace. Something that has been given to you. The power that has come to dwell within you and be more stable than the circumstances of your life
3. It’s the peace of Christ.
3. It’s the peace of Christ.
It is not something you develop, or cultivate yourself through education or methodology. It’s is something that comes to reside and take up life inside you. It only comes from the union with Jesus
It only comes from the union with Jesus
ONE DAY When you are younger it is easy to frame your Peace mentally by saying: “One day I will get this or that. One Day I will be here and stable. One day I will have what I need to accomplish. One day the circumstances will be different one day. Etc. Etc. Etc.
But as you get older you become more and more aware how completely dependent on your circumstances your peace is. The circumstances of the world what you have so little control over. You realize you have no Peace of your own unless you have the supernatural peace.
You realize you have no Peace of your own unless you have the supernatural peace. Do you have it?
SUPERNATURAL PEACE
SUPERNATURAL PEACE
Now, how do you get it?
Do you have it? Now, how do you get it? How do you cultivated?
How do you cultivated?
Paul gives us three strategies here in the text for cultivating this Peace of our heart. Mystery strategies are simple.
THINKING OUT
THINKING DOWN
LOOKING UP
I. THINKING OUT.
I. THINKING OUT.
1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
If Then = Seek the
“Since then........ set your” = logic
Paul is simply saying think out what this means for your life and live that way. If this is true, think out what the implications of your actions are and live that way.
How is this different from the secular approach to peace, stress, anxiety?
What is interesting about the secular approach is it does not start with thinking it starts with doing. Rather than working through to a conclusion it is a move toward a methodology of managing. They move right to technique.
Henry Blackaby talks about the difference between confessing your sins and managing yourself. One imagines that you can just deal with it while the other deals with it and then allows you to live free from it. This is the idea here.
Articles in magazines like good housekeeping or Vanity Fair don’t start with a big questions like what is the meaning of life? How am I thinking about life? Where am I coming from? Where am I going? What is the big most important thing I can do to benefit others? These are not the questions that they seek to answer.
Instead they think and deal with “what must I do to alleviate the stress in the moment. How can I stop this pain from hurting me right now.”
Let’s talk about balance, recreation, diet, rest, relaxation techniques, controlling guilty thoughts, meditation, and technique, etc. Etc., all valid strategies but nothing dealing with cause.
WHY?
Because thinking it out forces you to deal with it honestly and come to real conclusions.
Oliver Wendell Holmes Junior — He was a leading thinker of his day but a very secular man. He thought out the implications of what life was from his view.1902 ish
There is no reason for attributing to a man a significant difference in kind from that which belongs to a baboon or to the grain of sand. The world is for just me and the rattlesnake but I will kill it if I get the chance and the only reason is because it is in Congress the world I want the one we are all trying to make according to our own power. -Oliver Wendell Holms
(14:31)
Why has he come to such bleak conclusions? Because he’s a secular person. As far as he knows or believes there is nothing greater than this life. An atheist just thinking out the implications of what it means if we are nothing more than an accident on earth.
As a atheist he’s just thinking out the implications of what it means if we are nothing more than an accident on earth.
He is saying two things. There is no rationality to assume that a human being is greater in importance than a rock. And secondly if there is no reason there is no right and wrong.
No purpose only power.
Nobody is to say there is right and wrong. Right and wrong is to imply there is a design, there is reason and purpose. So if there is no reason or purpose then who’s to say you are not right and everyone else is wrong. It just becomes a matter of who has more power to overcome the views of others.
Nobody is to say there is right and wrong. Right and wrong is to imply there is a design, there is reason and purpose. So if there is no reason or purpose then who’s to say you are not right and everyone else is wrong. It just becomes a matter of who has more power to overcome the views of others.
The average Olympian thanks kind of like this:
I agree that biology equals life and there is a random missing evolutionary aspect of things. I agree that it’s all an accident. But, I know, I know that people have that. I just know it. And there is right and wrong. Injustice is raw, violence is wrong, people are valuable. I just know it.
GETTING YOUR PEACE BY REFUSING TO THINK IT OUT. While there is nothing particularly wrong with “just knowing it“ please understand that this approach is getting your peace by refusing to think out the belief structure to its logical conclusion.
Not thinking out the implications of your own view.
CHRISTIANITY WORKS IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION
We believe that there is a God who desires to live in relationship with humanity and despite the other rejection of humanity to God, God has worked to move heaven and earth in order to reconcile humanity to himself. Think about the implications of that kind of love and dedication. THINK. The great value humans have to God. The earth and the need to teach them what is right and wrong.
We believe that there is a God who desires to live in relationship with humanity and despite the OUTRIGHT rejection of humanity to God, God has worked to move heaven and earth in order to reconcile humanity to himself. Think about the implications of that kind of love and dedication. THINK. The great value humans have to God. The earth and the need to teach them what is right and wrong.
Those are very different world views.
The secular person says “I am not going to think about the implications of my belief, and that’s how I will get peace.“
I WILL NOT THINK; I WILL JUST DO, MANAGE.
THAT IS A STUPID PEACE
Here’s what Christianity has
Here’s what Christianity has
Here’s what Christianity has
Not a stupid Peace, but a smart Peace.
While the world says I’m not going to think too deeply about this the Christian says I cannot not think to deeply.
SAY NO TO ESCAPE-ISM Christian refuses to practice escapism. “Ho ho ho to the bottle I go to calm my heart and drown my woes.“
This is a way of getting to peace but let’s face it, it’s a stupid please
The Bible teaches us that the Christian way to peace is a way by getting smarter. By thinking it out.
There are no intellectual shortcuts to finding peace.
There are no intellectual shortcuts to finding peace.
Some folks think that Christianity is been about just closing your eyes and taking a “step of faith“ no that’s the opposite of what Christianity is. That notion is more a kin to those Who do not believe.
There is absolutely no way to Peace without doing the intellectual work. Without exploring, questioning, resolving, doing the mental heavy lifting of dealing with life and its hard questions. Of interacting with others and answering the objections that they put up and trying to figure out how to understand those questions that are raised from them as well.
There are no intellectual shortcuts.
THIS IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH
While all this is true. It is not good enough. The intellect alone will not get you there. If you are a thinker your self, or I’ve ever spent any time with thinkers, you will find often that it is really easy to be stuck in a rabbit hole because you’re thinking has reached a point where a while you believe a certain way you can’t seem to get out.
II. DIGING DOWN.
II. DIGING DOWN.
(21.00)
v5 put to death therefore whatever belongs to your earthly nature…”
“… Idolatry.“
Kill off. Long list.
The Holman Christian Standard Bible Chapter 3
sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desire, and greed,
And this is Echoed in other places. it’s quite a list when combined together with other places.
To term that matter here.
Evil Desires = Epithumia
“Evil desires “Epithumia” is a hard word to translate into English because we really don’t have a synonym. So we come up with the words like desire. But in essence it means a mega desire and inordinate desire, and over the top desire. And incredible desire
MAKES LITTLE SENSE TO US IN THIS FORM: “Evil desire“ really fails to capture the idea here, because it’s putting a thought in your mind that in English makes perfect sense to you. Don’t pursue a desire that is evil. But that is not what Paul is getting out here. Many of the desires here have some good in them. Sexual desire is normal I need for money and commerce is normal. Paul is saying put away things that are extra, or over the top, or obsessively Beyond what would be normal.
It is not an ordinary desire for something evil but an extraordinary desire for something that is good which leads to evil.
He is, in effect, calling out a real problem in idolatry.
Everywhere this word is used it is used as a catchall phrase to lay out the basic fundamental problem with the human heart.
1 My little children, I am writing you these things so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ the Righteous One. 2 He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not only for ours, but also for those of the whole world.
3 This is how we are sure that we have come to know Him: by keeping His commands. 4 The one who says, “I have come to know Him,” yet doesn’t keep His commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly in him the love of God is perfected. This is how we know we are in Him: 6 The one who says he remains in Him should walk just as He walked.
7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old command that you have had from the beginning. The old command is the message you have heard. 8 Yet I am writing you a new command, which is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.
9 The one who says he is in the light but hates his brother is in the darkness until now. 10 The one who loves his brother remains in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. 11 But the one who hates his brother is in the darkness, walks in the darkness, and doesn’t know where he’s going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
12 I am writing to you, little children,
because your sins have been forgiven
because of Jesus’ name.
13 I am writing to you, fathers,
because you have come to know
the One who is from the beginning.
I am writing to you, young men,
because you have had victory over the evil one.
14 I have written to you, children,
because you have come to know the Father.
I have written to you, fathers,
because you have come to know
the One who is from the beginning.
I have written to you, young men,
because you are strong,
God’s word remains in you,
and you have had victory over the evil one.
15 Do not love the world or the things that belong to the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in him. 16 For everything that belongs to the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride in one’s lifestyle—is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17 And the world with its lust is passing away, but the one who does God’s will remains forever.
18 Children, it is the last hour. And as you have heard, “Antichrist is coming,” even now many antichrists have come. We know from this that it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they did not belong to us; for if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us. However, they went out so that it might be made clear that none of them belongs to us.
20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you have knowledge. 21 I have not written to you because you don’t know the truth, but because you do know it, and because no lie comes from the truth. 22 Who is the liar, if not the one who denies that Jesus is the Messiah? This one is the antichrist: the one who denies the Father and the Son. 23 No one who denies the Son can have the Father; he who confesses the Son has the Father as well.
24 What you have heard from the beginning must remain in you. If what you have heard from the beginning remains in you, then you will remain in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that He Himself made to us: eternal life. 26 I have written these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you.
27 The anointing you received from Him remains in you, and you don’t need anyone to teach you. Instead, His anointing teaches you about all things and is true and is not a lie; just as He has taught you, remain in Him.
28 So now, little children, remain in Him, so that when He appears we may have boldness and not be ashamed before Him at His coming. 29 If you know that He is righteous, you know this as well: Everyone who does what is right has been born of Him.
16 He told those who were selling doves, “Get these things out of here! Stop turning My Father’s house into a marketplace!”

16 For everything that belongs to the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride in one’s lifestyle—is not from the Father, but is from the world.

. Call uses it in and here. discussing the fruit of the Spirit. Peter uses it everybody uses it
The problem with our heart is not ordinary desire for good things it’s extraordinary desire for good things that leads to corruption.
--IDOLATRY.:
Well it appears that it is only associated with greed here if you match it with
5 For know and recognize this: Every sexually immoral or impure or greedy person, who is an idolater, does not have an inheritance in the kingdom of the Messiah and of God.
or Paul makes almost the identical statement. What are you talking about all the issues
Paul makes almost the identical statement.
Kill off the over-desires in your heart which is the root of idolatry. Paul is illustrating for us here how people work psychodynamically.
24:47. Mark in the recording.
psychodynamic: The interaction of various conscious and unconscious mental or emotional processes, especially as they influence personality, behavior, and attitudes.
Paul is illustrating for us here how people work psycho dynamically.
HoW sin works in the heart Psychodynamically
In the first commandment says you shall have no other gods before me.
The Holman Christian Standard Bible Chapter 20
I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery.
3 Do not have other gods besides Me.
4 Do not make an idol for yourself,
THERE ARE NO ATHEISTS.
Note, it does not say that you can have no gods. Having no God is not an object. Everyone worships something. Or worships something as God
It is impossible for a human heart to not worship anything.
People may say that they do not worship anything. And that may be true in the FORMAL sense. But every single person lives for something. Just because they don’t want to call it “God“ doesn’t dismiss the fact that they are radically altering their life for that which they are living for.
THE BASIS FOR SOMETHING ....for their joy, the basis for their meaning, it is the “something“ that gives their life value and worth. It is the thing that has made their “life”
THE THING THAT MAKES LIFE WORTH IT.
How do you find out what these items are that are Epithumia in your life
How do you find out what these items are that are Epithumia in your life
TAKE THE TEST OF IT
22 Stay away from every kind of evil.
23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely. And may your spirit, soul, and body be kept sound and blameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
20 Don’t despise prophecies, 21 but test all things. Hold on to what is good.
1. ASK YOURSELF THIS QUESTION:
What pursuit, what relationship, what thing,?
What is the one thing in my life that would, if I lost it, make me want to question whether I want to live?
KELLER makes point here that suicidal thoughts can have reason other than just the spiritual things. There can’t be chemical or physical abilities. Close quote)
Everybody has something. What is that one thing?
What is that one thing? That is your life. If to lose it leaves you feeling like you don’t have a life, that is your life!
If to lose it leaves you feeling like you don’t have a life, that is your life!
You have put into its hands the power of life and death over here. It is your real master. Real God, real savior, real worship.
REMEMBER WHAT LIZZIE BENNETT SAID? Till I have your disposition, your goodness, I never can have your happiness.”
Something out there unsettles what’s really a value inside you.
Something out there unsettles what’s really a value inside you.
1. ASK YOURSELF THIS QUESTION:
2. TRACE BACK TO THE SOURCE
The second way is to find the mega emotions in your life. The overwhelming ones, and trace them back to find the thing that is have such great value in your life, that which has become an idol
Supernatural peace does not replace normal grief and emotion in your life. Jesus got angry. If the good thing is in your life and something jeopardize it you worry. Jesus should concern. If THERE IS A GOOD THING good thing is in your life and something jeopardize it or you lose it. You show grief. Sometimes things happen in life that make you worried. None of this is what I’m talking about.
Supernatural peace is not to remove the normal human emotions. Jesus reacted to humanity very much the same way most of us do and he is that peace.
Supernatural peace holds you together during those moments so that you are able to endure and navigate life with joy.
What does remove your Peace is not normal worry, normal anger, normal sorrow, it’s EPI-
maximum anger maximum sorrow maximum worry
If there is a good thing in your life and something blocks it, you get angry. But if there is a maximum thing in your life and something blocks it you get bitter. You cannot overcome it. IT IS A EPI-DESIRE
If a good thing is jeopardized you worry, but if it’s an ultimate thing you’re paralyzed. You don’t know what to do. You’re frozen with fear and anxiety.
If a good thing is being lost your grieved. But if it’s an ultimate thing you’re an absolute and complete despair.
Epithumia
There are alternate competing functions in your life that are competing for Lordship and you will not find peace in your life and less you’re willing to take down and discover what these things are. YOU MUST DIG DOWN
III. LOOK UP
III. LOOK UP
What are we gonna do about our idols? Most people think we’re going to deal with it by willpower. Most of us are kind of blind to what’s really important to us. We minimize it. We think that yeah it’s important but it’s not really an idol. We don’t think it’s actually ruling us.
Famous statement by Thomas Chalmers
Thomas Chalmers FRSE (17 March 1780 – 31 May 1847), was a Scottish minister, professor of theology, political economist, and a leader of both the Church of Scotland and of the Free Church of Scotland.[2] He has been called "Scotland's greatest nineteenth-century churchman".
“idols can never be uprooted they can only be replaced.“
We only sees to be free at one appetite because another appetite has brought it into support nation. Are youth bases to idolize central pleasure
We only cease to be the slave of one appetite because another appetite has brought it into subordination. A youth may cease to idolize sensual pleasure and partying around but it is only because the idol of material gain has gotten the ascendancy.
But there’s not one personal transformation in which the heart is left without an object of beauty and joy. The hearts desire for one particular object may be conquered, but its desire to have some object is unconquerable. The only way to dispossess the heart of an old affection it’s by the expulsive power of a new one.
WHAT MAKES CERTIAN THINGS IN YOUR LIFE SO POWERFUL IS THAT YOU ARE WORSHIPING THEM. JOYING IN THEM
WHAT ARE THEY?WILLIAM TEMPLE SAID? “Your religion is what you do with your solitude.”
Your religion is what you do with your solitude
Your idols of the things that you are meditating on, where does your mind go when you’re by yourself? Thanks you are doting on?
Your idols of the things that you are meditating on, where does your mind go when you’re by yourself? Thanks you are doting on?
YOU MAY THINK YOU CAN CONQUER IT BUT YOU NEED MORE.
TO FIND peace and freedom you have to recognize these things are something that every man has deep in his soul.
You may think you’re going to be able to do that by willpower. And you might be able to conquer it at some level. It’s your need for something beautiful something to go wrong with always going to be there. It’s something to replace it
YOU CAN ONLY EXPEL ONE BY RELPLACING IT.
That is why verse five says therefore kill off those infections overblown infections. And the work therefore is referring to verses one through four
That is why verse 5
The Holman Christian Standard Bible Chapter 3
5 Therefore, put to death
says therefore kill off those infections overblown infections. And the work therefore is referring to verses one through four.
You can only kill off those idols if you’ve done those verses. If you set your heart and set your mind on things above
SET YOUR HEART…(3-4)
SET YOUR HEART…(3-4)
Set your heart on the reality that you have died and you have been raised with Jesus and when you do that you will be able to realize and cast out the things that destroy your peace.
You can only kill off those idols if you’ve done those verses. If you set your heart and set your mind on things above
You have God with Christ, you have been raised with Christ, you are in him.
Set your heart: we’re not just talking about thinking. We’re talking about rejoicing in something, celebrating something weeping with joy over something.
God considers your sins as forgiven just as if you died on the cross to pay for that yourself. Totally forgiven. Secondly when it says you have been raised it means you have been raised to a point of honor and intimacy
1. You have died
1. You have died
Set your heart on the reality that you have died and you have been raised with Jesus and when you do that you will be able to realize and cast out the things that destroy your peace.
Is it hard to understand? Yes. That is why you have to pour yourself into all these things in order to drill it into your heart and mind that this is the new reality.
The Holman Christian Standard Bible Chapter 3
For you have died, and your life is hidden with the Messiah in God.
What am I supposed to do to get there?
You have God with Christ, you have been raised with Christ, you are in him.
God considers your sins as forgiven just as if you died on the cross to pay for that yourself. Totally forgiven.
First, realize your heart is already set on something that is earthly. Find out what it is set on. It said somewhere.
2. You will raised
2. You will raised
Secondly when it says you have been raised(revealed) it means you have been raised to a point of honor and intimacy with God
The Holman Christian Standard Bible Chapter 3
When the Messiah, who is your life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.
Is it hard to understand?
Find it, and then look at it and say you are not my life. Jesus is my life. And then rejoice in Jesus for being the very thing that you’ve been looking at that thing for to give it to you.
Yes.
That is why you have to pour yourself into all these things in order to drill it into your heart and mind that this is the new reality.
What am I supposed to do to get there?
What am I supposed to do to get there?
15 And let the peace of the Messiah, to which you were also called in one body, control your hearts. Be thankful. 16 Let the message about the Messiah dwell richly among you, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, and singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, with gratitude in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
