5412 To Run After Or Run From

A young girl was being examined for membership in a local church. “Has Christ made a difference in your life?” one deacon asked. She replied that He certainly had. Trying to draw her out more, he asked, “Well, then do you sin any more?” The girl admitted that she did.

“Well, if you sinned before you were a Christian and you sin since you became a Christian, how has Christ made a difference in your life?”

The girl thought a moment. “Sir, I think it is this: before I was a Christian. I ran after sin. Now I run from it though sometimes I am still overtaken.”

Title: How do I know if I really know Jesus?

Text:

Review:
What is this righteousness?
It comes by the implanting of his nature.
It is manifested in a righteous life.

Sin, Avoidance of

A wife came to the conclusion that carbonated drinks were having negative physical effects on her family and herself and so decided that they should give them up. But how would she convince her three-year-old daughter, who liked them so much, that it was necessary to stop drinking them?

As the wife was telling her husband of her decision, the little girl piped up to ask, “Mommy, we don’t like pop any more?” Mommy said “That’s right!”—and that was all it took.

Oh, for such a readiness to give up something when we learn that God does not want us to do it.1242

This would and should bring tremendous assurance to the believers of that time.

(3) Those who know Jesus do not continue in lawlessness (v. 6)

Application: Questions you can ask:

(1) Do I desire and strive to do what is lawful?
(2) Is the motive for striving to live lawfully because of the lawful, finished work of Jesus Christ?
(3) Is my life growing in active righteousness because of imputed righteousness?
