Discussion:
Even if you know some stuff about the people around you, you don’t know everything.
And you spend more time with them than you do reading about Jesus.
As we study the Gospel of Luke, this is more than just reading some text or learning some facts, this is about learning who Jesus is, what he did, what he taught, what he cares about, and how learning what it’s supposed to look like to be one of his disciples.
Review from last week.
Review over what we learned last time.
Luke-Acts written by Luke
The birth of Jesus showed the desire that God wants to connect with humanity.
John the Baptist was born within a few months of Jesus, and he came into the world to prepare the way for Jesus.
Jesus Begins His Ministry
This week:
Important aspects of Jesus’ baptism
In the Old Testament, King’s were anointed as King.
This is the moment that Jesus is shown to be the messiah king.
In the Old Testament, when King’s were anointed, God would give him the Spirit.
God gives Jesus his Spirit.
God affirms that Jesus is his Son.
This sets up baptism as a way for us to enter into Christ, since he was baptized first.
Luke 4:
The Spirit Leads Jesus into the wilderness where he is tempted
He has a showdown with Satan
Will he stay true to the purpose of being here?
Or will he compromise on his mission?
Jesus officially begins his mission
Luke 4:14-
This is a quote from the Old Testament
Isaiah 61:
The word used for poor means aflicted
afflicted (person) n. — a person who has been the victim of some pain, injury, or harm, either physically or mentally; often associated with recurring treatment or events.
And then the word for liberty was the word that was used for the jubilee
The jubilee was commanded to the people in
Every 50th year was the year of Jubilee
It was a year when everyone was set free
If you had a debt and had been working as a servant in a house, that household had to set you free from your work on the year of Jubilee
Even people’s lands were to be returned to them.
If it was family land, but the family had a debt, so they loaned out the land… it was returned
Jesus came for the sake of the those who are poor or afflicted in life to set them free from their bondage
Getting to Know Jesus
What does this tell us about who Jesus is?
What does it tell us about what Jesus cares about?
What does this tell us about who Jesus is?
What does it tell us about what Jesus cares about?
If we are followers of Jesus, what or who should we care about?
When we are slaves to sin, what does Jesus think about us?
