LAST WEEK
We looked at
We looked at the Law of Liberty and the Law of Love
We were challenged to the chore when it comes to our freedoms in Christ
Paul said “Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves”
Such a great standard to live by
Bottomline, as a follower of Christ, we must be aware of the things we do, the things we approve of, and be quick to correct ourselves when we act out of line.
THIS WEEK
We are going to look at
It is a continuation from last week, and an invitation for the future of the church
We must remember that this was a church struggling with unity
The Jews were power hungry
The Gentiles just wanted a shot at this leadership thing
Paul wants them to function together in unity
He want’s them to represent Jesus well
TURN TO
Romans 15:1-13
PRAY
Romans 15:1-
FRIENDS
THE LIFE OF A CHRIST FOLLOWER SHOULD BE, AT IT’S CORE, SACRIFICIAL.
Not in a salvifical sense.
But in a winsome sense
Not because we can Save
But in hopes that Salvation would be realized in the lives of others
One thing we must realize is that nothing that we chose to do in Jesus name
None of the freedoms that we chose to sacrifice for the sake of our brothers and sisters
Can trump the work of the cross
Jesus is the only one that can save
He said, If I be lifted up, I will draw all men to myself
So the question is:
Are we lifting him up?
Are we representing Jesus well
Paul said
“I am crucified with Christ, it is no longer I who live, but
Is this our Mantra?
Is this at the core of our decision making?
The Sacrifices we make as followers of Christ speak to our personal relationship with Christ
They tell the story of the inner working of the Spirit in our personal lives
They are personal convictions that lead us in becoming more and more like Jesus.
This working of the Holy Spirit creates a stronger faith
They are ours
The more the Spirit is allowed to work within the Christian, the stronger he/she will be
It is how God is working in us
PAUL, TURNS TO THESE, WHO HAVE ALLOWED THE SPIRIT TO WORK POWERFULLY
AND SAYS . . .
Bear with the scruples of the weak
Bear with their weaknesses
Not in a self pleasing way
But in a way that keeps the door open for ministry
In a way that builds them up, and doesn’t tear them down
In a way that shows that we are all a work in progress.
CHURCH, PEOPLE AROUND US SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED BY THE WAY WE LIVE
OUR LIFESTYLES SHOULD POINT PEOPLE TO HOW GOOD OUR GOD IS
IN THE OLD TESTAMENT, GOD ENCOURAGED HIS PEOPLE TO A LIFE OF BLESSING EVEN IN THE MIDST OF TRIALS
EVEN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BABYLONIAN CAPTIVITY
EVEN WHEN THEIR NEIGHBORS WORSHIPPED A DIFFERENT GOD.
Jeremiah 29:5
AS CHRIST LIVED OUT HIS LIFE AND MINISTRY
HE DIDN’T DO IT IN A WAY THAT WAS PLEASUREFUL TO HIM
HE EVEN SPOKE TO THIS POINT DIRECTLY
BECAUSE OF HIS MINDSET, HE WAS ABLE TO TAKE THE PUNCHES
He was able to take the criticism
He was able to take the reproaches of those who reproached the Father
He was able to live humbly and peaceably amongst people He created
Never misusing His deity
Or misrepresenting His Father
JESUS, AS A REPRESENTATIVE OF GOD, FULFILLED HIS MINISTRY
REPRESENTED GOD IN THE FULLEST SENSE
CHECKING OFF THE REQUIREMENTS OF HOLINESS ON OUR BEHALF
When we consider all that was written
When we look at scripture and the things that were predestined for the Son to accomplish
These writings and their fulfillment should effect us
The example Jesus left us with should drive our actions
They should educate us and disciple us as Christ Followers
They should teach us something about patience
They should give us comfort
That through a longsuffering mindset that is comforted by the fact that God is in control, we may have hope.
FRIENDS, WE SHOULD BE THE MOST LONGSUFFERING PEOPLE
WE SHOULD BE THE MOST PATIENT PEOPLE
WE SHOULD BE ADVOCATES OF PATIENCE AND LONG SUFFERING
ADVOCATES OF WAITING ON THE LORD
Instead we are products of our culture
Wanting everything ASAP
Unable to wait for something Good
MY PRAYER IS JUST LIKE PAULS
“May the God of Patience and Comfort grant you to be like minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus, that we with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ
We serve the God of Patience
We serve the God of Comfort
As we are made more and more into His image
We will learn to put our differences aside
We will learn what its like to serve a God that shows no partiality
We will worship and glorify with one mind and one mouth the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
IF UNITY IS THE GOAL
HOW SHOULD THAT GOAL BE REALIZED?
Romans 15:7-
AS CHRIST HAS RECEIVED US
SO RECEIVE THOSE WHO PRACTICE DIFFERENTLY THAN US
RECEIVE THOSE WHO HAD DIFFERING UPBRINGING THAN US
BE HOSPITABLE AND ALLOW THE LORD TO WORK
