Main Idea: We are to live every day on mission for God

5 About the times and the seasons: Brothers and sisters, you do not need anything to be written to you. 2 For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. 3 When they say, “Peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. 4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not in the dark, for this day to surprise you like a thief. 5 For you are all children of light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or the darkness. 6 So then, let us not sleep, like the rest, but let us stay awake and be self-controlled. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled and put on the armor of faith and love, and a helmet of the hope of salvation. 9 For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up as you are already doing.

Go ahead and have a seat.
So as you may recall 1 Thessalonians was written by the Apostle Paul, if you are new to church you may not know but Paul’s life was drastically changed by God, just like ours is when we accept god as our lord and savior.
The book of Thessalonians is one of what we consider the Pauline Apistles. This is a letter that was written by Paul to the church in Thessalonica. Geographically that is in what is Greece today. There is something different about this letter than Pauls other letters and we see that in Verse one- “You do not need to have anything written to you”, the people in the church of Thessalonica.

Point 2
lets look at verses 2 and 3
For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night, when you say peace and security then sudden destruction will come upon them, like labor pains on a preagnant woman and they will not escape. Why is this important to us you might ask, we never know when a thief will come upon us, we tend to feel at peace and secure, we relax, we become complacent, we forget to pay attention to detail, we let our Guard darn, so wht is the first part of that, well why is this important, we can look in the book of Joel in the old testament and we can see the imagery that before the day of the lords return the world will be dark and gloomy

2 Blow the horn in Zion;

sound the alarm on my holy mountain!

Let all the residents of the land tremble,

for the day of the LORD is coming;

in fact, it is near—

2 a day of darkness and gloom,

a day of clouds and total darkness,

like the dawn spreading over the mountains;

a great and strong people appears,

such as never existed in ages past

and never will again

in all the generations to come.

13 “Therefore be alert, because you don’t know either the day or the hour.

We can also see in that Jesus tells us we do not know when he will return.
Verse 5
We see that paul continues to tell the followers that hey now that you know who Jesus is we no longer belong to the dark, we belong to the light. We do not belong in the world but we are now part of God’s family and as such we have Hope.
In verse 6 we continue to see that Paul reminds us that we are set a part we are chosen ones and as such we need to live a life that honors and glorifies God, in our words and actions and deeds. We have to have self control, we have to live a life of moderation because that is what is pleasing to God.
As we continue we see that in verse 7 we are reminded of the dangers of living in the darkness, of being blind to what is going on around us.
Verse 8 this is very likely one of the greatest reminders we see in the book of Thessalonians of who we as believers supposed to be, of how we are to live. Self controlled, we are told to do things in moderation, we are called to be slow to anger, we are put on the armor of faith and love. We are to have faith in God, trust that he will provide, we are to love just as Jesus did, he loved people where they were no matter what and the helmet of of the hope of salvation, the hope that we can only find in the relationship with Jesus. This relationship is like no other for God sent his son to be an example for us, to show us how we are called to live. We have to be mindful of the fact that once we have that faith in Jesus that we have something we can find no where else, that we have Hope, we have the protections provided to us in no other way than through the hope of salvation, the fact that Jesus life was a ransom for ll that we have done, not only for the things we have done in the past but the things that we have yet to do. When we trust that he will return, we can live a like none other.
Lets look at

who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father

38 He is not the God of the dead but of the living, because all are living to him.

In verse 10 we are reminded that we as discovery church need to live in such a way that we are encoraging to each other and building up one another up.
Are you living your life in a manner that is keeping you from focusing on God? Are there things that you need to be doing to be closer to God that you aren’t doing? Are you living in the darkness right now? If there is something keeping you from living that life right now, lets give that to God in prayer right now.
Lets pray-
Father God I ask that you take the obstacles in my life that are keeping me from you, that you remove them from my life. Father God I ask that you allow me to be steadfast in my relationship with you. Father God allow us to live that life that keeps you at the center, let us put the armor on and live that life that glorifies you and keeps us close to you. Father God we love you, we thank you for the gift of your son and the new life that we have in him. Its in his precious name we pray- Amen.
This applied to the church in thessalonica then and it applies to us today.
