John 15:1 NIV84
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.

John 15:1 NIV84
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.
What does the Bible say about vines?
This is the 7th of Jesus’ “I am” statements.
, , I am the Bread of Life
I am the Light of the World
, I am the Gate
I am the resurrection and the Life
I am the way, truth and the Life
, I am the vine
Jesus is the link that nurtures life with the Father, the Author of Life.
The emphasis of “true” (alethinos) denotes what is true or genuine, the real deal.
John uses this world in several places:
John 4:23 NIV84
Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.
John
John 6:32 NIV84
Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.
John 15:1 NIV84
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.
John
John 17:3 NIV84
Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.
As the TRUE VINE, Jesus produced what Israel could not: Fruit that pleased the Gardner.
VINE most likely refers to a grapevine.
Notice the use of grapes and then the cup in the Lord’s Supper.
Psalm 80:8 NIV84
You brought a vine out of Egypt; you drove out the nations and planted it.
Psalm 80:8
Christ is the True Vine.
Isaiah 53:2 NIV84
He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
Isaiah 53:
What kind of plant is a vine?
It is a spreading plant. Notice what this means in scripture: Christ will be known as salvation throughout the ends of the earth.
The fruit of the vine gives man cheer:
Judges 9:13 NIV84
“But the vine answered, ‘Should I give up my wine, which cheers both gods and men, to hold sway over the trees?’
Judges
The fruit of the Lord is better than gold:
Proverbs 8:19 NIV84
My fruit is better than fine gold; what I yield surpasses choice silver.
Proverbs
Christ is the TRUE Vine. He is not one that deceives as in
2 Kings 4:39–40 NIV84
One of them went out into the fields to gather herbs and found a wild vine. He gathered some of its gourds and filled the fold of his cloak. When he returned, he cut them up into the pot of stew, though no one knew what they were. The stew was poured out for the men, but as they began to eat it, they cried out, “O man of God, there is death in the pot!” And they could not eat it.
2 Kings
The True Vine washes and cleanses:
Genesis 49:11 NIV84
He will tether his donkey to a vine, his colt to the choicest branch; he will wash his garments in wine, his robes in the blood of grapes.
Genesis
The True Vine overcomes obstacles:
Genesis 49:22 NIV84
“Joseph is a fruitful vine, a fruitful vine near a spring, whose branches climb over a wall.
Genesis 49:22
The True Vine gives safety:
1 Kings 4:25 NIV84
During Solomon’s lifetime Judah and Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, lived in safety, each man under his own vine and fig tree.
1 Kings
“My Father is the Gardner”
The Lord created the earth. He created it to be worked and cared for.
What does a Gardner do?
The Gardner cultivates, protects the vine.
“Who could have greater skill in nurturing our growth?” Lawrence Richards
John 15:2 NIV84
He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.
What does it mean when Jesus says, “He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit?”
The purpose of the Vine is to produce fruit.
Isaiah 5:2 NIV84
He dug it up and cleared it of stones and planted it with the choicest vines. He built a watchtower in it and cut out a winepress as well. Then he looked for a crop of good grapes, but it yielded only bad fruit.
Isaiah 5:2
If someone calls themselves a Christian, what do we look for? We look for Christ-like character don’t we?
A branch cut off takes away any possibility of growth or bearing fruit. What a horrible place to be!
Which would you rather have, a branch cut off or a branch that is pruned?
What is the purpose of pruning?
“The purpose of pruning is to train the vines in to an orderly growth pattern and optimize grape production. Pruning helps avoid over-burdening the vines with an excessive crop and promotes healthy vine and vegetarian growth.” - GardenGuides.com
Prune is from the Greek word kathairo. It means cleanse, cut off the useless sprout; clear, unproductive wood.
Fruit is progressive: Vs. 2 we have Fruit; vs. 2 we have “more fruitful”; vs. 5,8 we have “much fruit.”
“every branch in me that bears no fruit” refers to the untrue follower. By the way, how do you measure fruitfulness?
Galatians 5:22–23 NIV84
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Galatians 5:20–21 NIV84
idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
