1 John 2:15–17 ESV

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

As followers of Christ, we can not be satiated with the things in this life, we can not be satisfied with the fleeting things in this life; rather we must find our satisfaction in God!

Our text: john to Christians who have become satisfied with this world/abandoned basic principles of the faith.

John tells us not to love the world and he tells us why.

John’s major concerns: people in fellowship who heard false teaching, and began teaching.

People allured by this special knowledge: Gnosticism (pre-Gnostic)

John wanted to shake them up and tells them don’t love the world. (late breaking news)

Don’t love the world: as a command

God loves the world right? John3:16

World defined (Kosmos): used 3 ways

1.Earth and creation-Psalm 24 (earth is the lord’s)

2.Humanity and Humans- (do good to all)

**3.Evil system controlled by satan. Invisible spiritual system of evil**

command for believers purchased with the blood of Jesus. Don’t love the world.

Leo the great: “Man, who cannot be without love, is either a lover of God or of the world.” He can never be both

We cannot love the world and god; these are in opposition.

To love is to desire and to be committed to it

It’s odd for believers to love both

-“you adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God

- If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you . . . if you were of the world, the world would love you as its own.

The world as anti-God/anti-Christ-it impossible for us to love both systems.

3 sins of worldliness-flesh, eyes, pride

Desires (epithymia)-38 times in NT, 3 positive

sinful longings, lusts after things God hates

desires are not bad themselves

Flesh-senses(touch, taste, hearing, smell)

16So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.

v17 tells us why we should not love the world-it is passing

1 john 2:8-“darkness is passing away, the true light is shining. The evil system of the world is fading away and will not last.

1corinthians 7:31- for the present forms of this world is passing away

The things of this world can be alluring but it is of no value compared to the eternal blessings of doing the will of the father. The will of the father, accept jesus as savior and Lord, believing in Him completely. Accepting the reality that salvation only comes through Jesus Christ and following the great commandment Love God and love others. That is the will of God and those doing the will of God will abide forever.
