The day of Pentecost was an annual feast that followed the Feast of Firstfruits by a week of weeks (i.e., seven weeks, or 49 days) and therefore also was called the Feast of Weeks (cf. ). The name “Pentecost,” of Greek derivation, means 50 because it was the 50th day after the Firstfruits feast ().

Believers were in a house.
Tongues: What happened?
1 If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a ringing brass gong or a clashing cymbal. 2 And if I have the gift of prophecy and I know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so that I can remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.
The nature of tongues, and their relationship to the church, evangelism, and personal devotion has been misunderstood, and oftentimes either abused or avoided since the very first example here in Acts.
To give a balanced approach that considers scripture and church experience, we can say for discussion that there can be two kinds of tongues.

After 400 AD there’s no mention of tongues until about 1900.
So what was the point?
17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will expel demons, they will speak in new tongues,
15 And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
Mark
Jesus had foretold this.

Things we can learn from this sermon.
Peter quotes the OT extensively, 3 times total.
The signs you see here and the signs that Jesus did are given as God’s way of verifying His claims to you.
The Crucifixion of Christ was God’s plan, carried out by Jews and Gentiles.
The resurrection of the Lord is a basic doctrine in Acts (v. 32; 3:15, 26; 4:10; 5:30; 10:40; 13:30, 33–34, 37; 17:31; 26:23). Here is another indication that He is the Messiah for it was impossible for death to keep its hold on Him (John 20:9).
5. This resurrected Christ has the authority to send the Holy Spirit, which is exactly what He just did. Another proof of His resurrection.
6. Here is the conclusion of Peter’s argument. The noun Lord, referring to Christ, probably is a reference to Yahweh. The same word kyrios is used of God in verses 21, 34, and 39 (cf. ). This is a strong affirmation of Christ’s deity.

7. The verb cut (katenygēsan) means “to strike or prick violently, to stun.” The convicting work of the Spirit (cf. ) in their hearts was great.

The men and women hearing this are basically appalled when they consider these implications, and so they ask what they should do. Peter answers with what Jesus prescribed in . Repent and be baptized.
8. This message is for everyone. For you , and your children, and for all far off.
Description of the First Church
3,000 people. If there were 120 believers before this, the church just grew by 2500% in one day.
Important to note that they were being taught by the apostles. We can rightly assume this was all of them.
Reflections and questions:
If you are sitting here in this room today, you belong to a direct spiritual lineage that traces all the way back to Pentecost.
